Assignment #1 In today’s society, human beings feel the need to read about other people’s lives in order to be entertained. Rather than taking interest in other activities like reading or the arts, people take interest in celebrity gossip. Society takes an interest in celebrity gossip because it is entertainment for them or it makes them feel better about themselves. Either way, people are reading more on celebrity gossip rather than picking up a good book and reading that instead. Celebrity gossip is not bad since, in a way, it is a form of news, but with gossip websites such as TMZ.com and Perezhilton.com, these websites have no boundaries as to what they put on their pages. It is up to the reader on what news they want to read about their favorite celebrity, good or bad. Celebrity gossip helps society maintain stability because people do not want to read about the wars that are going on or global warming. Instead, they would rather read about something shocking and entertaining like from a recent article by TMZ.com about “Beyoncé Accused of Photoshopping.” People would take interest in this rather than an article about a war because Beyoncé Knowles is a very popular female figure that women look up to, and finding out that she allegedly photoshopped a picture of herself is a big deal to people. Rather than wanting to focus on sad events that are occurring in the news, people would rather read this article because it makes the feel better about themselves knowing that even Beyoncé is not perfect like society puts her up to be. Conversation Analysis (CA) is the study of talk-within-interaction that attempts to describe the orderliness, structure and sequential patterns of interaction in conversation. It is a method of qualitative analysis developed by Harvey Sacks with the aid of Emmanuel Schegloff and Gail Jefferson in the late 1960s to early 1970s. Using the CA frame of mind to view stories shows us that what we may think to be simplistic relaying of information or entertaining our friends is in fact a highly organised social phenomena that is finely tuned in a way that expresses the teller’s motivation behind the talk. (Hutchby & Wooffitt, 2011). It is suggested that CA relies on three main assumptions; talk is a form of social action, action is structurally organised, talk creates and maintains inter-subjectivity (Atkinson & Heritage, 1984).
The celebrity selected for this analysis is Ellen DeGeneres. Emmy-winning talk-show host Ellen Lee DeGeneres is born on 26th January 1958 and she is an American comedian, television host, actress, producer and a writer. With her own talk show, she is one of America's most well-known television hosts.
Part of that is because some people’s perspectives of celebrities allow them think as if they’re on a pedestal and are more important than the average human. When people vision these celebrities as these quintessential people it enable’s their own thoughts and opinions on the celebrity. It’s like brainwashing, these celebrities only show the media what they want, which allows them to put up a whole façade and mask who they truly are. Celebrity blogs typically provide great insight into the three important theoretical perspectives in sociology. This paper will analyze the data obtained from five selected celebrity gossip blogs, such as Celebitchy, Yahoo Celebrity, The Huffington Post, Time, and SheKnows. The analysis will be based on the theoretical perspectives of celebrity gossip, particularly conflict theory. For instance, it will address the inequalities that exist in the gossip blogs based on race, gender, class, or sexual inequalities. Additionally, it will identify the interests of those served by the blogs as well as those who get exploited or suffer as a result of the publication of the blogs.
The Celebrity as a Commodity Hurst introduced the idea of a commodity in the text. By definition, a commodity is something that is of use, advantage, or value. More directly, Hurst showed how people by use of their skills, looks, or names, could be used as advantages in society. He uses the examples of celebrities, sports figures, and beautiful people to show that people can be commodities. All of these groups bring some sort of recognition or attraction that is beneficial to a company, firm, or individual.
Some might disagree with Klosterman’s view on Perez Hilton and his villainy, but that is because they do not realize the amount of hatred and sorrow Perez Hilton has brought upon the world. Perez Hilton might seem like a bully to some but if we take a step back and look at the big picture we will see that he is in fact the definition of evil. After observing and researching all the sources portraying celebrities I have came into a conclusion that todays society it seems like all we want is to be accepted and we tend to look at other people and judge. Its not right, we all are different and thats what makes the world go round. It would be a pretty boring world if we were all the same. Celebrities deal with this everyday, I think the paparazzi know more about some celebrities lives than they actually do. They judge them for who they are and what they do, it is not right nor fair.
Why is that all blogs or media sites only pay attention to the bad behavior? We see videos of famous people getting drunk, doing drugs, and even being disrespectful. Eventually, we see this domino effect on young girls, they start being rebellious, start to talk back to their parents even go to parties and drink. Nowadays, celebrities are seen as role models to these kids. What kind of example are these celebrities providing to teenagers when they can barely control their life. Role models are supposed to be someone you admire, someone you look up to and try and follow their examples. Not someone who lives a fake life and you barely know. As stated in an article called “Why this generation is so completely obsessed with the idea of Celebrity” Adam Pliskin explains the real reason to why we follow celebrities as much as we do. This is because we secretly want fame ourselves.
When you turn on the news some of the biggest stories are going to be about what celebrity is in rehab or who’s sex tape leaked on to the internet, this to me is not news! Everyday thousands of people go to rehab and thousands more share nudes on the internet but you don’t hear about them. If its news Brittany did it than why is it not news the girl down the street did it? This obsession has no real affect in our lives and this should not even be news at all. If you look at our media more and more important news stories are being overran by dumb useless news on celebrities. Causing americans to value non important issues and ignore real news. More people know what Honey Boo Boo did today, than whats really going on in the world. This to me is sad and needs to change before it gets worse. In order to complete an analysis of a television show through six basic theoretical approaches, I chose to use the pilot episode of Gossip Girl due to its strong representation of class differences. In this episode, the interesting characters of the Upper East Side are introduced and viewers begin to get a sense of the lifestyles that they live. From the elite, to the middle class, issues and attitudes are established. All of the main characters attend an established private high school and seem to backstab each other as a form of entertainment. Few individuals look up to celebrities for fashion advice, relationship goals and success stories on how to better your lives. According to Linda Carroll msnbc.com contributor, “A little bit of gossip is healthy. It's what keeps the culture going, greasing the social machinery.” People do enjoy hearing, reading and viewing celebrities downfall. Our society is headed in the wrong direction, and if we continue on that path, our society will only suffer more in the distant future. We need to take control of our gossip entertainment because it is only becoming less entertaining and more damaging to our culture.
Much of today’s society seems obsessed on what actors/actress, athletes, and music artist are wearing, eating, who they are marrying, dating, where they are vacationing, what affairs they are having or have had, and how they live their everyday lives. What’s so interesting about this obsession is as a society we are implacable and often place celebrities on a pedestal, only to destroy them when they are illusive or promiscuous. Media outlets are swift to report when celebrities are in trouble but quickly forget all their accomplishments. It’s as if we want them to be perfect but once they are associated with a scandal we embark on destroying their reputation and character. Should society hold celebrities to higher standards just because they are paid millions for endorsements and a craft they worked hard to perfect? Do we as a society have the right to castigate celebrities when they misbehave? Do celebrities have the right to become livid when they are focused on for their immoral behavior? Do they love the media attention only when it benefits them? Before we can answer the above questions, would we, furthermore, can we live our life as a celebrity if given the opportunity?

Throughout Americas Hollywood History the views of women actresses has changed drastically, two very good examples are Elizabeth Taylor and Lindsay Lohan.The contrast between these two women show a difference in class,culture and time.
