Basketball Then and Now Can you imagine playing the game of basketball without a three point line? Basketball has constantly changed throughout history and continues to change today. The National Basketball Association has risen in popularity and is now one of America’s more popular sports. Because basketball continues to be a popular sport, a fan should learn about the origin of the NBA, how the game evolved from the late 1940s to the early 2000s, and how the players today impact the way it is played. Although many sports are not considered American-made, basketball is one of the few that began in America. In fact it is the only major sport that can be considered American-made (Encyclopedia.com, Basketball). The inventor of basketball was Dr. James Naismith, who created the sport in 1891(History.com Staff, NBA is Born). This was all the way back when there were only forty-four states(nbahoopsonline.com, NBA History). He made the sport in Springfield, Massachusetts(History.com Staff, NBA is Born). Naismith invented this sport because he was P.E. teacher seeking a sport with limited physical contact, but it contained running, jumping, shooting, and hand-eye coordination(Encyclopedia.com, Basketball). The game first used peach baskets and a soccer like ball(History.com Staff, …show more content…
There are now even more international players in the league today, and many of them show great potential. International players like Giannis Antetokounmpo and Kristaps Porzingis are just few examples of rising stars in the game(Segal 79). As of today the NBA is in a phase known as the LeBron era(Segal 22). Right now, guards are being seen as more of the focal point of the team rather than big men(Segal 33). Some of today’s brightest stars include guards like Russell Westbrook, James Harden, Kyrie Irving, and Stephen Curry(Segal 10). Last but not least, players are forced to play a lot softer today than in the past due to multiple rule changes(Trenchard, NBA Then and
There seems to be two sides differing in opinion as to just what is going to become of the National Basketball Association. On one side are those who feel as if the league will never recover from the lockout and the loss of Michael Jordan. With the whole labor dispute being about how to divide 2 billion dollars in television revenue amongst its owners and players, the NBA fell into the dark shadow of professional sports. Much like what Major League Baseball faced back during the 1994-95 season, the NBA must now try to overcome its tarnished image from the lockout during a rebuilding time in which the whole nature of the game has changed. No longer is their anymore championship dynasty's, players that are associated with one team, or college seniors entering the draft. But rather, now there is a league that is dominated by talented 21year-old's more focused on personal sponsorships and popularity than on winning.
Like Robinson, these men paved the way for today’s players and are the reason that the best athletes in the world now play in the NBA.” (Dave Howell, NBA.com, Six Who Paved The Way, Page 1). African-Americans in basketball, more specifically the first 5 players, began to make people realize that African Americans were not foreign creatures, they were actual people. People also began to realize that African Americans make equally as significant contributions to the society and community as anyone else
In 1979, the NBA introduced the three point line as a chance to score more points during a possession, which later on proved to be a great addition to the game (McNamee, 2013). But, it was not until the late 1980s and 1990s when the play of Michael Jordan sparked popularity and growth in countries all around the world with his high flying dunks. Today, Stephen Curry is revolutionizing basketball with his long range shooting ability. Steph’s ability to score from anywhere on the court, has forced teams and players to follow his footsteps and adapt to his style of play. With the rise of basketball globally, basketball still remains most played in the United States.
Since its creation in 1893, the sport of basketball has been one of the most popular sports in the United States. One wouldn’t have to search long to find a basketball court and a pickup game in most American cities. Many people around the world look up to the stars of the National Basketball Association as role models.
Basketball originated in 1891 when future Presbyterian minister named James Naismith (1861-1939) was assigned to teach a P.E. class at Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) training school in Springfield, Massachusetts. The class had been noted for being disorderly, and Naismith was told to invent a new game to keep the young men occupied. Since it was winter and very cold outside, the game had to be played indoors was desirable. Naismith had a flashback to his childhood in Canada, where he and his friends had played "duck on a rock,”. The game involved trying to knock a large rock off a boulder by throwing smaller rocks at it. He also recalled watching rugby players toss a ball into a box in a gym. He had the idea to nail up boxes and the players would attempt to throw a ball. When he couldn't find boxes he used peach baskets. According to Alexander Wolff, in his book 100 Years of Hoops, Naismith drew up the rules for the new game in "about an hour." Most of them still apply in some form of todays. Basketball was a simple game that could be played indoors during winter. Naismith spread the rules freely, and there was a need for Naismith's legacy included the first great college basketball coach, Forrest "Phog" Allen (1885-1974), who played for Naismith at the University of Kansas and went on to win 771 games as a coa...
The National Basketball Association has gone through a lot to get to what it is today. Today’s league contains thirty teams. These teams are divided into two conferences, the east and west. Fifteen teams are in the east and fifteen teams are in the west. Another way they are divided is there are six divisions that contain five teams each. Two NBA teams the Golden State Warriors, and the Cleveland Cavaliers have battled it out in the finals for the last three years and are the front runners this year(Trenchard, NBA Then and Now). In today’s league, players
The game of basketball is recognizable high school or the NBA. The sport is very popular and is played worldwide. Everyone may also know the sport from some names of basketball stars. Maybe the names Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Dr. J, Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, or Carmelo Anthony ring a bell. They are all outstanding players of the game and have a significant understanding of how the game is played. Basketball has changed alot overtime and has become one of Americas most played sports.
Basketball is a popular sport that millions of people play around the world but does everyone know how basketball started and how it evolved throughout history? “Many people do not know that basketball was around since the early 1890s. In 1891, James Naismith, a Canadian-American sports teacher invented this simple sport”(Livestrong.com). Certainly the rules and the style of play wasn’t similar as today’s game. When it was first played in the early ages, there were more carrying the ball and tackling other players in order to get the ball.
The rules of basketball have changed, grown and are much more complex now. There are now more ways of fouls, violations, and we have added different player positions as well. Instead of using a soccer ball and peach basket we now have a hoop ten feet high made for the sport, along with a ball for it. There are still two teams but with only five players on each now. The game has slowly evolved and people have discovered new and easier ways to score, and defend the basket from being scored on. Its unbelievable how much the game has changed and where it is
In 1891 James Naismith created the game of basketball, this game started off as a game only man played. James Naismith was a Canadian P. E teacher and invented the game for his students during the winter. The game of basketball started in Massachusetts where Naismith invented the game and has now spread throughout the world. Not only did the sport start to pave its way, but so did women’s basketball. As time went on women’s basketball took off and became more popular with changes along the way.
Basketball is growing and becoming a well known sport, where two teams of five players attempt to score points on an opposing netted hoop (basket) 10 feet high while stopping the other team from scoring on their own basket. This sport is not just becoming popular in America but in many other nations such as Spain, Lithuania, Australia, and Croatia. However, one player in the United States named Stephen Curry (Steph) is changing the game of basketball by becoming one of the deadliest perimeter shooters of all time. Despite the opposing views of being unable to change a sport individually, Stephen Curry is evolving the game of basketball himself through his shooting efficiency, his ability to consistently make “bad shots”, and becoming a dominant threat in the National Basketball Association (NBA).
Today’s league contains thirty teams and these teams are divided into two conferences, the east and west. Fifteen teams are in the east and fifteen teams are in the west. Another way they are divided is there are six divisions that contain five teams each. Two NBA teams the Golden State Warriors, and the Cleveland Cavaliers have battled it out in the finals for the last three years and are the front runners this year(Trenchard NBA Then and Now). In today’s league, players are relying more and more on a three point shot(Segal 14). Players like Stephen Curry are revolutionizing the game of basketball with their shooting talent(Segal 15). This causes players to have to contain a three point shot in their arsenal to even be considered a superstar(Trenchard NBA Then and Now). There are now even more international players in the league today, and many of them show great potential. International players like Giannis Antetokounmpo and Kristaps Porzingis are just a few examples of rising stars in the game(Segal 79). As of today the NBA is in a phase known as the LeBron era because of how he took the league by storm ever since he arrived.(Segal 22). Right now, guards are being seen as more of the focal point of the team rather than big men(Segal 33). Some of today’s brightest stars include guards like Russell Westbrook, James Harden, Kyrie Irving, and Stephen Curry(Segal 10). Last but not least,
Basketball has had a large impact in the society. In the NBA, the teams bring out nationalism within their city. Various cities have a National basketball team representing them in the NBA. This in turn brings out a healthy competition that paves the way to socialization, support, and unity among individuals. NBA players can have a positive impact on individuals as well as an entire nation. ESPN deemed Jeremy Lin, an NBA player, to have the ability to expand basketball largely in China.
The actual playing of basketball originated in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith when he had to come up with an “athletic distraction” for the students attending YMCA International Training School. Denying the idea of going outside to play sports like soccer, football, etc. Dr. James Naismith thought back to his childhood days, recalling a game called “duck on a rock”. The concept of this old game was one player was required to defend an object called the “duck” while players on the opposite team threw small rocks to knock it down. How Dr. James Naismith was able to forge a well-known sport from that type of a game will forever be a mystery, yet he set off to work using two peach baskets nailed around 10 feet high. Since the sport he created wasn’t a real sport yet, they were forced to use a soccer ball, aiming to get the ball into the peach basketball while resisting the opposite team trying to defend their basket. The goals, being baskets, presented a problem, when a team eventually scored they had to come up with a way to get the ball out of peach baskets. In order to do so they used a long pole and pushed against the bottom of the basket to be able to get the ball out of there. By creating this game, Dr. James Naismith has been able to bring countries together by eventually bringing this spo...
First came the development of the game we know today as basketball in the late 19th and early 20th century. A man named Naismith from Massachusetts was given the challenging task of creating an organized team sport that could be played indoors. Basketball was originally played indoors in the small gymnasiums during the winter months to keep the players out of the cold weather. Naismith was challenged with the task of creating an indoor sport because he had to create a game that was completely different than the sports played outside that were too dangerous to be played inside. With this task, he also had the challenge of creating a sport that was a team effort, not just one individual controlling the entirety of the game. As stated in Spalding’s
