What is Athletic training, and what could someone do with an athletic training degree? Athletic training is a unique field because it requires a strong mental and physical ability. These trainers go by many different titles such as: physician extender, wellness manager, rehab specialist, etc. Many trainers do not work under anyone, as they have their own office outside of the athletic setting. However, these trainer also work in many other places, such as: universities, hospitals and clinics, professional sports fields, military bases, etc. With a degree in this field, one might want, for example, to work in a hospital or clinic, as stated above. What would he/she be responsible for in this particular setting? A trainer working in a hospital would try to ease the pain of the injury and help move the patient through the process of the treatment. There is a huge diversity of sports in all parts of the world. Some of the major ones, just in the United States, are baseball, soccer, basketball, and football. In my opinion, I think that football is the sport that causes the most injuries. Though these injuries will happen, it does not matter the sport. The demand for most jobs requiring this degree is very high. As of today, the median salary is around forty to forty-five thousand dollars annually. Also, the rate of employment is slowly rising. From now up to ten years, the rate of employment is supposed to rise at least nineteen percent. According to the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA), there are at least six schools in the state of Alabama that provide certified programs to get you on the right track in order to become a trainer. After you attend a college with the certified program for four years, and graduate w... ... middle of paper ... ...red to stand on the field with the players at all times and watch the game closer than anybody. The team usually provides a meal before and after the game. This job has other benefits also. When a trainer or group of trainers spend much time working with one particular athlete, and that athlete's performance improves, it assures them that they are doing something right. Personally, I think anyone that is mentally and physically capable should be able to go through with this occupation. It has a good employment rate and a nice salary. For those who don’t want to be stuck in an office all day, I think that this would be a great choice It seems like it has its highs points and its low points, but I think that it is worth it. After all, you are not only helping others and keeping them in shape, but you are also staying active and helping to keep yourself in shape too.
For this project, the certified athletic trainer who I have shadowed for almost eight hours in just one day is Candace O'Bryan, currently the athletic trainer at Archbishop Hoban High School in Akron. Candace has worked at Hoban now entering her third year at the high school. She works alone as a trainer there but works along side one team doctor who is at every game, and the other one being a neurosurgeon but is just a parent helping out.

Athletic Trainers play a crucial part in today’s professional sports. They also help on lower levels of sports in high school, and college level teams. The job of an athletic trainer is simple yet very important, they are charged with treating, and preventing injuries. A trainer does this by developing therapies to reduce pain, and improve mobility (“Athletic Trainer Salaries”). They have to stand for long periods of time, work well with athletes of different sizes, move or carry equipment around, good mobility and communication skills to give instructions (“Athletic Trainer, Healthcare Program”). These trainers serve as a crucial part of an athlete getting back into their sport. Athletic trainers usually work under the direction of a physician, so they are like the Doctor’s healing hands in action.

Sports Medicine is a medical field that specializes with physical fitness, treatment and prevention of injuries related to sports and exercise. It was introduced around the early Greek and Roman era when the first modern Olympic Games took place. The Greek felt they could do something to help heal and prevent injuries that the athletes were receiving. Now in sports medicine, certain injuries can only be assessed and treated by specific physicians. These physicians can include physical therapists, athletic trainers, and strength and conditioning coaches. Although sports physicians are most commonly seen by athletes after they are hurt so they can be treated, there are some physicians that are seen before an injury occurs so that they can learn how to prevent injuries.
I would like to enter the University of Charleston’s Athletic Training Program on the basis that I love being around sports and I enjoy working with and taking care of athletes. I first became interested in Athletic Training when I was given a tour of the UNC Athletic Training facility by Kevin Guskiewicz, who is the current dean of UNC College of Arts and Sciences. He was the previous head Athletic Trainer for UNC. After the experience, I quickly enrolled in Athletic Training classes in high school and began to learn the basics for becoming an Athletic Trainer. I loved learning about different injuries and how to treat them because as a student athlete I am very accident prone and figuring out what is wrong with my body is important for my collegiate athletic career. I have also had a dream of working with professional athletes. I have been involved with sports my whole life and have always considered these professional athletes as my role models. By entering University of Charleston’s Athletic Training Program I
I am interested in pursuing a career in athletic training. My school has a partnership with my local football team. I hope to visit your company for a day to obtain a better of the career I have chosen. I need to understand what qualifications I must have for such a career. I have always wanted to go into athletic training. Just imagine, if I got big enough in that, I can possibly be helping out a famous football player. To me, it would just be amazing to go and help somebody like Rob Gronkowski. It is possible that my favorite sports team will hire me. My favorite sports teams are the New England Patriots, Oklahoma City Thunder, and the Cincinnati Reds.
Some would agree that the field of Athletic Training has not changed over the past hundreds years while others would say that it has changed over time. People have said that it has changed over time because we have more studies, and technology is more advanced than what it was now from in the past years. “Athletic Trainers (ATs) are health care professionals who collaborate with physicians” (Hofstra University, n.d). “The services provided by ATs comprise prevention, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions” (Hofstra University, n.d). Athletic trainers are the first to arrive and the last to leave at most practices and games. They are responsible for making sure the athletes receive the care they need in order to perform at their best. To be a certified trainer, you must have a degree from an accredited institution with an athletic curriculum. The courses you would have to take should include areas such as first aid, injury prevention, human anatomy, physiology, nutrition, physical therapy, illness and prevention, and emergency care. Once you obtain a degree, you must also pass a comprehensive test administered by the Board of Certification. If certification is granted, you must continue to meet ongoing educational requirements to maintain your certification.

When most people think of a physical trainer the first thing one would think of would probably be a very strong and bulky man, but anyone can do this. (AFAA) The biggest skill you would need is to have the will power to never give up and battle through the pain. In order to be a successful personal trainer it is ideal to have excellent communication skills. You will need these because of the amount of people you are going to have encounters with. You will also need to have a lot of patience in case you have a patient that is slower than you or is struggling with one of the exercises. Another attribute for someone who is interested in the field is someone who is strong mentally and physically and enjoys working hard. It is someone who is not willing to give up and makes sure the tasks have been completed. The last skill needed is to have great listening skills. They need to be able to hear the patient and try to make a nice, comfortable conversation with them. The more relaxed the client is, the more comfortable they will be; and they will likely schedule more sessions.
