Pros and Cons of Attending College Tyree Thomas Zane State College In 2013, 19.9 million students were enrolled in colleges and universities (college, 2014). Also in 2013, the unemployment rate for college graduates over 25 was 3.6 percent (college, 2014). Those are both great examples of a pro and a con of attending college. Although, attending college has many pros and cons. Most college graduates make more money, but student loan debt is crippling them. Going to college helps establish great connections and you learn networking skills, however, you can still be equally as successful without a college degree. More and more jobs are requiring a college degree, but you aren’t guaranteed the job in your field with the degree. Last but not least going to college is an amazing experience, however, college doesn't necessarily grow my mind if you don't do it correctly. So you have to ask, yourself do the pros out way the cons? One of the major cons in going to college is the student loan debt that you have to deal with after you graduate. Between 2003 and 2012 there was a 18 percent increase in student loan debt for the average graduate over 25 years old (college, 2014). This is mostly due to the extreme increase in tuition. In the last 24 years the tuition rate has raised about 30 percent. As of 2013, there is 1.2 trillion dollars in outstanding student loans. So in my opinion this would be a major reason not to go to college, however, there is a scholarship for everything and you can get one you just have to do the work. Then you should think of the type of money you make after you graduate. If you get a descent job and you pay on our loans on time the interest rates wont be as bad. Overall, college is not a good investment for anyone but the college that you’re paying. It costs too much teaches you few life skills, and doesn’t jive with everyone. As such, it’s recommended that you skip out on college and learn how to live how to live in the real world
There is a thin line of people who should and should not attend college. That is a huge decision that could either be the best decision they have ever made or it could be a costly mistake causing thousands of dollars of debt to pile up. There are reasons such as costly tuitions, unnecessary fees, no guarantee of a career, piling of debt, and questionable educational quality, that lead me to believe that college is not worth the money people pay for it.
Is college worth it? Is college worth the time and energy you invest? This is a question that many students ask themselves as the cost of college rises and jobs are harder to find. As a 27 year, old college student myself I really thought about this question. I had to think back when I first started college at the age of 18 and how I was excited about starting college. I easily got tired of all the work that it took to get the degree so I dropped out. One benefit of college is that you will have better self-discipline after you get out of college. There are those students that don’t want to study or do the work and they are just in college for the parties and to have fun and college is not for them. But for the mast majority that are actually contemplating furthering their education I say go for it and that you won 't regret it. I know many students look at the debt that they will incur while they are in school, but when you look at the rewards that come from receiving a college education they outweigh the risk. Having a college degree in today’s world is very important because more companies and businesses are requiring that anyone they hire has at least a two-year college degree, which is also known as an Associate 's degree. High school graduates and other people who have had thoughts about going to college should do so because it is getting harder for just a high school graduate to get a job, this is a result of hiring companies and businesses don’t want anyone without a college degree. Having a college degree will open more opportunities for the future. By doing so they further their lives and create a future that they want.
Is College worth the debt? You and I can both agree that education is vital in this day and age. But is it smart to take the risk and not go to college? College is worth the debt because after everything is done, you will have something to show for it. A challenge that all seniors face at the end of their high school career is the decision that will shape the rest of their future. Will it be Harvard, Ivy Tech, or a job at the nearest fast food joint? Of course, there is nothing wrong with not going to college, but for the people of society who plan to marry and have at least three children, it is almost essential. After making this decision, the seniors who choose to attend college must then decide which one. Campus size, housing, nearby activities, and available degrees and study programs are all important traits to consider when searching for the perfect college.
Honestly college at this certain point in time does not seem worth it. Everywhere else in the world college is free but the United States. People would feel more motivated to go to college if it was free. College is the main reason Americans are having to live such a hard lifestyle. My father did not go to college and makes eighteen dollars an hour. On the other hand my aunt did go to college and make twenty-four dollars an hour but is still paying back student loans so after paying all of her stuff back she only makes around fifteen dollars an hour that she gets to bring back and that doesn’t include taxes. That’s the reason college doesn’t seem like a good choice to make in life.
It is easy to think college is not worth the cost to become better, but getting educated molds a better person, and creates happier people in the future and occasionally they become better in health (Leonhardt 25 ). Becoming a better and happier person is pleasing for everyone. Even former President Obama says “‘Education helps us be better people. It helps us be better citizens. You came to college to learn about the world and to engage with new ideas and to discover the things you're passionate about -- and maybe have a little fun’” (Procon.org). Learning and engaging in everything is a skill everyone should have, so like he said we should go to college to be able to do that. Additionally, education shows people to develop more intellectual skill and become more responsible (Pew Social and Demographic Trends). Thus said, being educated and smart is something everyone can do and college helps with that. Likewise, college can encourage someone to be more educated and happier. Reaching the point of happier and more educated is worth the cost.
Attending college is worth it. Students who get a college education and graduate have many more life changing opportunities than those who don 't; the debates of studying after high school has been ongoing for many years but statistics have proven that majority to all students who go to college achieve more life goals than the average high school graduate. They get more work benefits, life skills, higher paying salaries, etc. There is a downside to everything in life such as debt is to college education.
