Children are taught through various forms of educational resources. Homeschooling is a new class of education that is growing in popularity, public school is a type of education that has been around for several years and is most universally used, and private school is the other conventional form of education that some people still prefer over the other options. Nowadays, more and more parents are pulling their children out of ordinary school environments and have chosen to teach their children at home. Now more than ever, parents are confused about which type of education is the best for their children.
Public school is a type of education that most people in the United States are the most comfortable with, simply because it has been around the longest. Although people are comfortable with the public school system, the environment we are comfortable with seems to be disappearing. Many parents send their children to public school today, because they do not know what other options are out there. Public schools today are not what they used to be.

Parents who are homeschooling their children should encourage those who are considering homeschooling to acknowledge all of the positive aspects of homeschooling and compare them to all of the negative aspects of public or private school. Homeschooling is becoming more popular in today’s society then before. Homeschooling is teaching school subjects to one’s children at home (Merriam-Webster Dictionary). But is homeschooling the best way to educate children? Homeschooling can bring more positive outcomes versus public or private schooling. This is because homeschooling can bring many benefits such as family orientation, no worries about bullies, less exposure to bad influences like drugs. Also it has a good success rate, adaptable cost, and flexibility. Homeschooling will keep increasing year by year. According to Dr. Brian D. Ray about 2% to 8% per annum was the growth over the past few years. For these and many more reasons is why parents choose to home school their children.

That’s 3.4 percent of all school age children (304). Homeschooling is defined as an education that contains less than twenty five hours of public school teaching each week and is based out of a household. An estimated 4 million children are currently home schooled with a 15-20% yearly growth rate. According to a California study by researcher Dr. Brian [D.] Ray, 92 percent of school superintendents believe that home learners are emotionally unstable, deprived of proper social development and too judgmental of the world around them. The latest claim against home schooling suggests that home schoolers are potential child abusers. Mr. Ron Barnard, a Holly High School teacher says that he would prefer public schooling for his children because of the peer socialization, extra curricular, and mandated curriculum. Public schooling is more efficient in educating our youth than traditional home schooling.
Although homeschooling has its benefits, it does not always lead to the best of the best in the academic world. Many people believe that homeschooling always leads to educational success; the homeschooled student gets accepted into the top colleges, they score higher on standardized tests than public schooled kids do, and they improve faster than children in public schools. These so-called benefits of homeschooling do not really exist unless the individual works hard. Some parents homeschool their children because they think that a homeschooling parent can relax all day and take part in very few activities. I started homeschooling when I was in the 4th grade. I had been public school before my mom decided to take me out. At the time public schools in Memphis had a program called “No child Left Behind”. Sadly I was the child that got left behind due to me being very ill. In the early semester of my 4th grade year I was hospitalized with an enlarged spleen and I was in the hospital for weeks. When I finally was able to go back to school my teacher did not help me get back on track. The teacher was even considering not letting me proceed to the next grade. So that was the day my mom decided her baby “Me” was not going to suffer in public schools any longer. It was a big change for me. Adjusting to being at home all the time from being in a public school environment was definitely different. I missed being around friends and going to music class.
In the recent times, home schooling has been the most sought mode of learning by the American parents. In fact, it estimated that over 1 million children in America are now undergoing home schooling (Cooper, 2005). Although this form of learning is legally acceptable, parents are entrusted with teaching and coaching their children in all subjects. Was peoples lack of trust in public schooling that started homeschooling movement. Parents do not want to share information for research due to the lack of trust between them and the government. The number of children homeschooled children that enter into college and excel with their grade point averages is amazing. Homeschooling gives the child the freedom to move through school at their own pace. The childes ability to self-teach themselves at their own pace while exceling over the public-school counterpart is amazing.
An accurate definition found in the Encyclopedia of American Education (1996) states: “Any elementary or secondary school under control of elected or appointed civil authority, supported entirely by public tax monies, and, with few exceptions, open to all students in a designated district, free of any tuition charges.” (780) These include elementary, secondary schools and vocational schools. Public schools are a good choice in education because they provide a wide variety of subjects to study, are diverse in their student body, available to everyone, yet can sometimes be misunderstood. Imagine sitting in a class, completely bored out of your mind. This is not difficult considering everyone has taken a class like this somewhere along the road of their education.
There are a growing number of homeschooled students and it appears homeschooling is successful. Most parents homeschool because of the environment, both academic and moral. The states need to insure all children are being educated. However, the requirements vary by state. Michigan is the most liberal, not even requiring homeschoolers to report to the state. The internet has expanded the types of homeschooling. Combined with the availability of the public school system for specialized programs, homeschooling is now a more popular option. Homeschooling will continue to be a growing area.
In today’s American society, quality education is important for one to succeed. Without proper education, a person will find it extremely difficult to apply for college, a job, or to pursue his or her dream. Typically when Americans think of education, public education is the first to come to mind. Public education has been around for centuries and is provided to most children throughout the United States. Due to this fact, public education has been the go to education source for years. Though, this trend is slowly changing with many parents deciding to home school their children instead. Many factors are the cause for this issue, but the common arguments arise from a certain few. For students, public school provides many opportunities ranging from social connections, school sports, and the exposure to teachers who are experts in their fields. But homeschooling is often superior because it offers additional time for students to participate in various extracurricular activities and community service, allows for more individual attention, personal character development, and it offers less exposure to discrimination that is received in the public school environment.

Homeschooling is receiving instruction of education in a place other than an established school. Some parents feel if they keep their children at home, they can minimize the chance that harm can happen. Other parents feel that they know their child best and can utilize personal strengths to work on educational needs. In the past, religion was the leading cause of parents who chose home schooling, now days this does not necessarily hold true.

The parents probably do not have the knowledge they need to teach, there are more distractions to deal with and parents may not know how to teach. These ideas are serious to think about and only add to the controversial idea of home schooling.
