Beowulf The epic poem Beowulf is a story of heroes and monsters, good and evil. The poem tells about the accomplishments and deeds of a legendary Geatish hero who first rids the Danish kingdom of Hrothgar of two demonic monsters: Grendel and Grendel's mother. Later in the story, Beowulf meets a dragon, kills it with the help of Wiglaf, but dies of wounds. No one knows who wrote Beowulf. It was not really written in the way that literature is written now. It is an epic poem, meant to be spoken aloud, very few of them were ever written down, and very few of them survived into modern times. Known as the first poem of the English literature, Beowulf is the major literary monument of Old English literature and of Anglo-Saxon England. The original work was written around the year 1000. The myth that Beowulf embodies has captured the modern imagination and placed the poem among the masterpieces of world literature. The poem documents the values, questions, and attitudes of the time and explores themes that are still engaging and fascinating. Beowulf is the oldest known piece of literature in English. Main Characters Of The Play Beowulf: The title character and hero. He is first the prince of the Geats and becomes their King. He is often referred to as the son of Edgetheow. The black raven, the wolf and the eagle will find a feast on the battlefield. The Geats will be people wandering without a homeland once our enemies come in upon us.' It appears that Beowulf's death signals the end of the Geatish people and the glory they won during Beowulf's reign. Works Cited: The Norton Anthology New York, London: W.W. Norton & Company R.D. Beowulf is among the earliest surviving works of literature. It was written in Old English and dates back sometime before the tenth century A.D. The poem is set in Scandinavia, and tells the story of the heroic warrior, Beowulf. Beowulf was the perfect hero. He fought for his people and defeated evil with his ability to bring on justice. Three of Beowulf’s traits that serve as evidence of this were his remarkable physical strength, his ability to put the well-being of others before his own well-being, and his courage.
Beowulf is an epic poem that was written in the late tenth-century, at the kingdom of the West Saxons. The two main characters are Beowulf, a young man; and Grendel, a furious dragon. Beowulf's world is a very violent society with wars as a dominant part of daily life. Dragons and monsters are a constant threat to the Danes and the Geats. Warriors are a necessity to this war-like society. Beowulf is a hero as well as a great, and honorable, warrior.
The poem, Beowulf, centers around the epic battles between man and demon. The poem deals with a hero’s journey and the battles he faces. Each monster brings a different set of obstacles and tactics that Beowulf must use to defeat it. Beowulf fights Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and a dragon, each battle had its own set reasons, preparation, and outcome, however there are some similarities between them.
Throughout the story, Beowulf fights three battles against frightening monsters. Beowulf, the prince of the Geats, was a well known warrior with extreme strength who makes a promise to protect his people under any circumstance. In the poem, his strength is tested, but he uses it to save many people in battles against: Grendel, Grendel 's mother, and a dragon. Before, during, and after each of these battles Beowulf shows many similarities and differences in his actions.
Beowulf and the dragon die together, and with his last words Beowulf requests a burial within a giant tumulus so his grave can guide sailors from the sea. Beowulf also crowns Wiglaf, who will bring years of prosperity to the Geats. Although having patriastic elements, Beowulf is predominately a pagan, as evidence with one of the closing lines that “twelve chieftains, all sons of princes, rode round the barrow lamenting their loss, speaking of their king, reciting an elegy, and acclaiming the hero” (101). The story of Beowulf teaches much about the ancient Anglo-Saxon times and pagan beliefs; not only is it a masterful piece of literature, but a manuscript that we can appreciate both in its historical and literary sense forever.
Beowulf, the Geat, helps Hrothgar the king of Danes by fighting against Grendel, the evil monster. Through his remarkably brave, inhumanly strong and incredibly loyal characteristics, Beowulf depicts the adventure of a Anglo-Saxon hero.
Rawls creates a hypothetical society, via a thought experiment known as the “Veil of Ignorance,” in which all that you knew of yourself is eliminated from your mind to allow you to come to a rational decision on how you would like your society to be organized. Rawls principle is that under a social contract what is right must be the same for everyone. The essence of Rawls' “veil of ignorance” is that it is designed to be a representation of persons purely in their capacity as free and equal moral persons. Out of this experiment Rawls provides us with two basic p...
...ce of justice for all people, since “a free-market system must be limited by the concerns of justice, which is the primary virtue of social institutions” (Mackinnon, 290). Rawls ideas on economic and social justice provide a more just system than the ideas of Nozick because of these concerns for the least advantaged.
Sandel’s thinks that the question of distributive justice is where the principles of justice are derived from. He states that Rawls believed that these principles are best derived from a hypothetical contract and that said contract should be carried out behind the veil of ignorance. Rawls then argued that those who are self-interested behind this veil would choose these two principles of justice to structure society: the principle of fair equality of opportunity and the difference principle. The first principle explains that all jobs and positions should be open to every and any individual regardless of their wealth, level of education, etc while the second regulates inequalities, only permitting those that benefit the worst off. Rawls argued
Grendel: A descendant of Cain and a man/monster, Grendel attacks Heorot after Beowulf's arrival. Beowulf eventually kills him, with his severed arm hung as a trophy in Heorot.
Hygelac is killed in a war against the Shylfings, and, his son dies as well, Beowulf now takes the throne of the Geats. He rules for fifty years, bringing prosperity to Geatland. When Beowulf was an old man someone stole an item from the tower, awakening and making the dragon mad. The dragon burned down villages, people, and Beowulf's castle. Beowulf then took twelve men with him to fight the dragon and lost. All of the men but one ran away. The dragon bit Beowulf in the neck, and the dragon's poisonous venom killed him.
The epic Beowulf is one of the earliest known works in the English vernacular. The protagonist, Beowulf, is a hero with superhuman powers who fears nothing and no one. The poem follows his journey through life and specifically his defeat of the three antagonists: Grendel, Grendel’s mother and the dragon, who brings about Beowulf’s downfall. The chosen passage details the horrors of Grendel’s attack on Heorot, the domain of Hrothgar, King of the Danes and comes before Beowulf is introduced.
In every tale there is a protagonist, hero, knight-in-shining-armor, or savior of some sort, and in the epic poem Beowulf, the title also happens to be the name of our courageous hero. Throughout this poem Beowulf encounters a variety of problematic situations where he chooses that battling his foes promises the best outcome. Our hero who has completed many challenging feats before coming to Heorot, decides to help and rid this land of their monsters. The three battles that Beowulf endures in this story include the fights between Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and the dragon.
Beowulf’s first accomplishment as an epic hero was his battle with Grendel. Grendel was a huge beast, a descendent of Cain, who ruthlessly murdered innocent Danes because he felt pity for himself. Upon hearing of the Dane’s problem, Beowulf set off to help the Danish without having been called upon. Even though Beowulf had men backing him, He drew battle with Grendel alone and without armor or weapons. Yet, Beowulf emerged victorious with the arm of Grendel as his trophy. Beowulf then went on to kill Grendel’s vengeful mother and a huge fire-breathing dragon who thought it had been done wrong by the Geats. Alas, the killing of the dragon would be Beowulf’s last great battle for the dragon took Beowulf’s life in the struggle for his own.
India is blessed with ample solar energy available which in turn can produce 5000 trillion KWS power by having average 300 sunny days per year and solar insolation of 4-7 kWh per Sq. m per day. Thus efficient trapping of solar energy could provide an alternative to fossil fuel dependent energy production. With increase in demand for power, now private sector has also started to invest in solar power due to better technological maturity and cost competitiveness. Technology for transforming solar radiation energy into both heat and electricity can harness solar energy effectively and have huge potential in scaling up power production. As there is positive correlation between energy requirement and GDP of the country, solar energy can address energy deficit in demand by both Off-Grid power supply ...
