Jameia Johnson Director Riveroll Senior Monday 28 August 2017 What makes someone successful is someone that is optimistic , embracing challenges, has confidence and someone that is passionate about what they do. In chapter four of Outliers what makes someone successful is their analytical intelligence, practical intelligence, IQ scores, entitlement and cultural advantage. In Outliers Chris Langan and Robert oppenheimer tell their opinions on what makes someone successful. Robert oppenheimer had practical intelligence because he was more social than Chris Langan. Practical intelligence is what makes someone successful because you learn by doing and learning ,not by watching and reading. “Practical intelligence is knowing what to say …show more content…
Lareau defines entitlement as “if they acted as though they had a right to pursue their own individual preferences and to actively manage interactions in institutional setting”. It was most common practice among the middle-class children to shift interactions to suit their preferences.(Gladwell, pg 105)Which they were open to sharing information and asking for attention. They knew the rules but they acted their own way to gain advantages.(Gladwell, pg 105) One of the wealthy parents in the book Outliers was teaching her son that he has the right to speak up with an older person . The mother wanted to teach her son that it's perfectly alright for him to assert himself. (Gladwell, pg 106 )When the son was meeting with the doctor he interrupted him while speaking. That was an entitlement that his mother permits that casual incivility because she wants him to learn to assert himself with people in positions of authority. Nowadays we are entitled to the wrong things. To me entitlement is like a stereotype being used. I feel like what the woman told her son to do was right. The mother was teaching her son a life lesson on do not be scared to speak up against what you think is not right. One thing that made me really think ,was when the boy interrupted the Doctor and the book says “ that was an entitlement that his mother permits it at home”.(Gladwell, 106) To be honest I don't think that is an entitlement during this situation because you're at the right place at the right time. It's not like the little boy was trying to be rude. The mother probably doesn't allow that at home but we let the world entitle us to
“Convincing the non-elite that inequality is morally right. Those most advantaged are justified in giving orders and receiving a greater proportion of valued goods and services, or at least, creating doubts about alternatives. All, individuals strive for cognitive consistency and will develop principles of fairness, such as Distributive Justice. Lastly, there is some evidence for distribution based on need as a result of ability to understand the needs of others. This is called the process of legitimation […]” (2011:461).
According to the Oxford Dictionary privilege is a special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group (Oxford Dictionary, n.d.). Furthermore if you add white to privilege you get white privilege which highlights the societal privileges granted to those who are white particularly in Western culture. In the novel Ceremony by Lesli Marmon Silko captures white privilege through the highlighted differences between whites and Native Americans. The narrator Tayo is aware of the privileges that whites have in comparison to Native Americans. Tayos awareness of racism is identified by his examination of the U.S. Army uniform, his analysis of Floyd Lee, and his inspection of Leroy 's truck.
... middle of paper ... ... The sense of entitlement that comes with sociopathy is astonishing to those who abide by the social laws and conventions of our culture. Where does the entitlement come from?
Privileges are things that a person receives that gives them an advantage over most people (Merriam-Webster). These are benefits that only certain people receive for being in a certain group or discourse. Peggy McIntosh, director of the Wellesley College Center for Research on Women, wrote “White Privilege and Male Privilege” and states “I think whites are carefully taught not to recognize white privileges, as males are taught not to recognize male privilege” (605). She argues that whites and males receive certain privileges, yet they do not even notice them. This shows that different races and women are still put at a disadvantage, but the people who receive the benefits are blind to the problem. Many people will argue that she is correct while some others will explain why this not is the case.
Privilege is a topic with, any definitions and many angles of interpretation. My definition describes privilege as a step-up or positive opportunity in a specific situation or circumstance that is not available to everyone. These privileges are sometimes earned while others are totally unwarranted by the recipient. An example of what I consider an unwarranted privilege would be a child living in a certain county and being able to attend a highly sought-after school strictly due to the way an area is zoned by the county. The privilege of a military veteran having his tuition paid for by the Government is a earned privilege by my beliefs. Privilege far extends far outside the boundaries of education. You will find privilege in virtually all facets

What is privilege? What does it mean? Is privilege inherited or is it earned? As an American resident of color I’ve learned that privilege in this country is something that is innate and inherited. The privilege that I speak of is that of White privilege.
1. (a) Privilege is defined as a favor or right granted to some people, but not to everyone.
Privilege and Oppression go hand in hand. Some people get more of one than the other. What is privilege and how has it affected me? How could I build a society that maintains these equal among everyone.
Inequality is what gives, some of use, comfort, power and privilege. This quote from King “It’s not that we don’t care about ethics or ethical behavior. It’s not that we don’t care about the environment, about society, about morality. It’s just that we care more about our comfort and the things that make us comfortable—property, prestige, power, appearance, safety” (163) is him summarizing this. He is explaining this subconscious action, people make when facing inequality knowingly or unknowingly. This action is actually inaction because why change something, to better another, if it will have a negative impact, no matter how small, on your life? This is drawn out for us in Ursula Le Guin’s The Ones Who Walk Away From
(Anon, 2017) The white racial group doesn’t fathom the realization and involvement of privileges they acquire just solely based on their race. . Privilege can never be earned through achievements; it is simply a chance at birth. If you are not born with it, you will never achieve it. Privileged should be considered an unfair advantage among a social, economical, and political context.
Success is within the mind of the individual. A large portion of ones life is spent working to become successful. People are told throughout childhood to work hard so they can grow up and make lots of money. But success takes many different forms. Different people have different interpretations of what success means to them. For some, success is measured by social status and wealth; for others success is determined only by the amount of happiness one feels.
A wise man by the name of Michael Kimmel once said, “the privilege of privilege is that the terms of privilege are rendered invisible. It is a luxury not to have to think about race, or class, or gender. Only those marginalized by some category understand how powerful that category is when deployed against them.” Privilege is an ‘invisible package of unearned assets’ that a particular person or group is granted. This quote truly gives a true exposed, meaning of privilege and explains the depths of what it really means to be privileged or have privileges.
We often hear people complain about how many people these days have a sense of entitlement, but have we ever stopped to ask why people end up feeling entitled? It is said that the number of people with a sense of entitlement is on the rise. A sense of entitlement means someone feels entitled to special privileges and is often considered a negative aspect of a person’s character. Everyone, at some point in life, has a sense of entitlement, so in the following paragraphs we will explore some of the causes of this event. One possible cause of a person’s sense of entitlement involves how their caretakers decided to raise them.
