Constructed during Egypt's 4th Dynasty, The Pyramids of Giza are truly an astonishing work of architecture. These pyramids display several of the characteristics, that are now known, to be attributed to the Ancient Egyptian era. Years of research show that much of the ancient Egyptian's focus in their artistry, was that of a religious nature, regardless of medium. Artists of the time, focused their efforts on depicting the various Gods and Goddesses, immortality and the afterlife, and the glorification of the pharaohs. (MindEdge) One of the best examples of this are the pyramids. Each pyramid was built to be the final resting place of a pharaoh (Khufu, Khafre, or Menkaure) upon his death, and subsequent mummification. They were built on the …show more content…
Twenty-five miles northwest of current day Mexico city, lays a city in ruins, one that dates back over a thousand years. The Mesoamerican site of Teotihuacan, or The City of Gods, is what will be seen. Teotihuacan, as named by the later settled Aztecs, pre-dates them by quite a bit. By the time that the Aztecs arrived at Teotihuacan, it was already a ruin. The three temples Sun, Moon, and Quetzalcóatl (or the Feathered Serpent) are a marvel to see. The temples are positioned along a long, wide strip of land that the Aztecs named “Street of the Dead”, or “Avenue of the Dead”. (Khan Academy) These structures fall into the Late Pre-Classic to Early Classic eras of Mesoamerica, and were built in the talud-tablero style. Which means that there was a platform (tablero) after every slope (talud). (Metropolitan Museum of Art) More so each section could be decorated, most likely with various murals. (Metropolitan Museum of Art) Soares 4 The two structures above are similar in a few ways. To begin with, both sets of pyramids were built in similar fashions, and both the Pyramid of Khufu and the Pyramid of the Sun are nearly rivaled for tallest pyramid in the
Triangles are an important shape when it comes to the construction of buildings. They're a sturdy, simple shape, so it's no surprise to see that ancient civilizations built pyramids. The most notable being the Great Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, as well as the Mayan Pyramids. But, what sets them so much apart? What are the similarities? What key parts make them so unique?
Initially, the Giza and Mayan pyramids served several purposes in their cultures and religions. Source three, paragraph five states, “Mayan pyramids functioned as temples, whether or not they were also tombs of high ranking officials. Only priests
The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World demonstrate individuals’ incredible creativity and imagination. God, of course, is responsible for these creations as He is the one who blessed mankind with such imagination and creativity. Some of these amazing pieces of history include the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Statue of Zeus at Olympia, and the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus. The complex architectural feats that each wonder displays are truly remarkable. However, six of these wonders have unfortunately been destroyed. The only structure that remains is the Great Pyramid of Giza. When observing this great ancient wonder, it is interesting to consider its general facts, theories of construction, and strategies of preservation.
In the early dynasties, Egypt was known as one of the most powerful civilizations in the world. What Egypt was most known for was their man-made pyramids. also provided a mode of transportation and communication between Upper Egypt, Lower Egypt, and surrounding areas. The Nile River was the greatest route for agricultural trade of crops such as wheat, corn, barley, and etc. The Egyptians were a spiritual people who believed the Nile flood was a gift from the gods and if they abided by a cosmic order they would continue to be rewarded. Moreover, these people were blessed with having natural barriers in addition to the Nile. These barriers included the dessert to the west and east, Cataracts (rapids) to the south of the Nile, and the Mediterranean Sea to the north. These strategic barriers made the Egyptians territory secure from invasions, but did not hinder them from trading with neighboring
The Egyptians built the most of these cultures. Over 90 royal pyramids were produced between roughly 2500 BC – 1500 BC. A daunting task considering that most of these pyramids were built nowhere near the supplies needed to make them. Giant stones were used, over a million for each pyramid and most stones weighed about 2 tons. The pyramids were basically gigantic tombs for kings and queens. They were seen as gateways between earth and the afterlife. The Egyptians believed that the dead royalties’ spirit could leave the body and travel through the sky with the sun each day. When the sun set in the west, the royal spirits settled into their pyramid tombs to renew themselves. The mummified body would be placed in these tombs surrounded by important earthly possessions and hieroglyphs telling their stories. Surrounding the pyramids were mortuary temples where mummification took place and where priest preformed rituals. The pyramids’ form evolved over the years when they were built, from a step design to the now synonymous slee...
Out of the first Seven Wonders of the World, only one is still standing: the Pyramids of Giza. This miraculous feat of architectural ingenuity erects upwards of 450 feet, has over two million blocks that range from two to thirty tons, and weighs all in all over five million tons, yet has been able to withstand the test of time. The Egyptians did so by creating their epic memorials in the most sound shape found in nature, the pyramid. With its wide base and narrow top it is virtually impossible for acts of nature to topple it. There are numerous variables and questions that go into finding the methods used to perform the acts of building the pyramids: getting blocks of limestone when their
There are many competing theories on why the great pyramid was built, none of them are definite but all of them are interesting. Many other pyramids have been built in the Middle East but none of the same stature. Other pyramids have been found to be burial chambers for various kings and pharaohs, but the Great Pyramid contained no burial remnants even though its essential design is the same as other pyramids, even containing special chambers for a king and a queen. (iii) Modern day scientists have discovered many interesting correlations between the location and dimensions of the Great Pyramid, that relate to the earth, the stars, and the seasons. (iv)
