There comes a time in person’s life when their must make decisions that will further go on to impact their life vastly. For many, that decision is whether to further their education or not. For those who do decide to further their education, they must choose which type of schooling is best, college or vocational schooling. Vocational schooling may appeal to those who are looking for an alternative and less expensive form of education. College, the more standard form of education, gives students the ability to have more flexibility since a variety of careers can be open to them from the major they choose. Both forms of education have its advantages and disadvantages, while benefiting the future of the student in the long run.

Vocational school provides students with career preparation in health care, computer science, education, business, and any number of highly specialized trades. Individuals have the opportunities to gain the knowledge and experience necessary to become electricians, machinists, painters, plumbers. Some programs administer licensing or certification examinations, in such program, allowing students to become eligible for employment immediately after graduation.

In “Tuning In to Dropping Out’’, Alex Tabarrok explains how vocational is important and how it can help students achieve their goals though it is not always respected. While many people judge vocational programs, others support and believe that is worth it. For example, Tabarrok explains the United States government pays less attention to vocational schooling, while in contrast Germany shows greater respect. “In Germany, students enter training and apprenticeship programs, many of which begin during high school” (Tabarrok). ... my education route, I chose college. Though tuition is expensive, I feel it was the better route for me. Though I can become a registered nurse through vocational school as well, I prefer college. It is giving me opportunity to make connections with other students who are not even in my major. I also have opportunity to get a look into different major. If perhaps my passion is not nursing, my exposure to different subjects may just help me in finding my true career.

In making a decision on whether college or vocational schools are better, there are advantages and disadvantages to consider for each. Vocational schooling gives career preparation but also limits students in their career. College gives variety and flexibility, while putting the student sometimes in debt. No matter the choice, the student is stepping forward into a better opportunity for himself.
