The dream that I most desire in life is to become a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer. I’ve always had an interest in the inner workings of the human body, but I also value life, and care for others, and my happiness is the happiness of others. Although this career has its bumps on the road just to see mothers face light up when they see the image of their unborn baby is such a breath taking experience. This all originated from going to one of my sisters’ ultrasound appointment that I ended up going to all my sisters’ ultrasound appointments. Slone Career Cornerstone Center states that although no state requires licensure in diagnostic medical sonography, organizations such as the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) certify the skills and knowledge of sonographers through credentialing, including registration. Because registration provides an independent, objective measure of an individual 's professional standing, many employers prefer to hire registered sonographers. Sonographers registered by the ARDMS are Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (RDMS). Registration with ARDMS requires passing a general physical principles and instrumentation examination. Sonographers must complete a required number of continuing education hours to maintain registration with the ARDMS. The growth is among the fastest rates in all healthcare jobs. As a result, as the demand grows for sonographers, so will the salaries (BLS). For as long as I remember, I only had one dream in mind, which was to become a doctor when I grow up. As I grew older, my dream did not change; in fact, it only grew more significant. However, the only aspect of my dream that did change was the type of field that I wanted to pursue. At first, I honestly did not have an inkling of an idea as to what kind of a type of doctor I wished to become. Then, I started to lean towards pediatrics and/or neurology. I haven’t always wanted to be a cardiac sonographer. The desire to be in this career just started to spark an interest in me a couple years back. You see, since I was a little girl I had always dreamt of becoming an architect or an interior designer. At first, the design aspect of that occupation interested me greatly. My dream started to fall short when I realized that a job like this would require me to make a move to a bigger city and that is something that I do not wish to pursue. There is always women, who aren’t licensed, that are being enrolled into nursing (D'Antonio, 2017). The first step that you need to take, is to get a high school diploma. You will need four years of english, math for 3-4 years, science 2-4 years, social studies 3-4 years, and taking 2 years worth of foreign classes are recommended (Starting Out, 2017). The next step would be to get into a nursing program. OB nurses have graduated from medical school and completed a four year that trains the nurses about pre-pregnancy health (Web MdD, 2017). In order to get into the nursing program, you have to apply to enroll in the program. Depending on the program you chose, it will take four years of schooling to get your bachelors in nursing (Thinking of Becoming a Registered Nurse, 2017). You have the option to choose what you want to get a degree in. The options are associates, bachelors, masters, nursing diploma through the hospital, or go through the military to get two years of training (Starting Out, 2017). Then after you complete your classes required for graduation, the final step would be to pass the NCLEX exam. Choosing this field is something that has a profound connection with my personal life. Becoming a Diagnostic Medical sonographer would mean that I have accomplished life long dream. Ever since I was a little, I always wanted to be in the medical field. I have always had a big heart and wanted to help people so when I saw the important role that sonographers play in the medical field, it became clear to me that being a sonographer was exactly what I want to do with my life. In 2007 someone who was very important to me passed away due to gastric cancer. When my grandmother, who was a mother, father, and a friend to me, was diagnosed with gastric cancer my world collapsed. It was devastating news, not only for me but also for the whole family.

My future career goal is to become an anesthesiologist. An anesthesiologist administers an anesthetic to patients before going into surgery. They also have to keep monitor of vital life signs and make sure everything in the body is functioning properly while under the anesthetic. I think being an anesthesiologist is something I’d enjoy being because I like being in control. I like making sure people are okay and that is specifically what anesthesiologists do; they make sure the patient can’t feel any pain and is comfortable during surgery.
According to the CDC, in adults over the age of 20, 69.2% are overweight and 35.9% are overweight (2010). With the average weight of the general adult patient generally increasing, this makes jobs harder for many in the healthcare field, especially sonographers. Abdominal imaging is generally deep imaging with a great deal of force required to push down into the tissue in order to create diagnostic image. Oftentimes, these are long exams with multiple organs and/or vessels to examine. Combine the multiple layers of adipose tissue, overlying bowel gas, and possible skin folds to work around will only increase the exam time putting further strain put on the scanning arm. Considering all of these factors, more and more often sonographers must resort to putting “limited exam due to patient body habitus” because the exam did not yield diagnostic quality images. Considering most of the profession works in hospitals, there are also impatient exams to consider. Patients are brought down in a bed or a wheelchair and commonly have limited mobility, if they are able to move at all. Transport will drop the patient off and the sonographer is left to assist the patient out of the wheelchair or on to the bed alone. The weight of a patient combined with a scenario in which the sonographer is having to lift said patient by him or herself puts great strain on the arms and back. If the patient is already in a bed, the sonographer must work around the large, bulky, sometimes non-adjustable bed in order to access the area they need to get to. Contorting the body and twisting the spine into awkward positions further increases the chance of injury
