Glucose is a sugar that plays a big part in a human’s health and well-being. This sugar is a major source of energy for the body’s brain and cells. The Cells that receive energy from glucose help in the building of the body’s muscle and tissue. Although glucose may be important to the body too much of this sugar can cause a chronic condition called Diabetes. Diabetes, also known as Diabetes mellitus, is a chronic condition that is caused by too much sugar in the blood. This condition can affect all age groups. In fact, in 2010 a survey was taken by the National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse, on the number of newly diagnosed diabetes. Out of 1,907,000 people: 24.38% were ages 20-44, 55.17% were ages 45-64, and 20.45% were ages 65 and greater. Diabetes is a very serious condition, and it can be deadly if left untreated. This paper will help better educate the reader on the signs and symptoms, the testing process, and the management of diabetes. Although there are many symptoms for Diabetes, many people fail to see the signs or they choose to ignore them. One sign is frequent urine output, this is caused by high amounts of glucose in the urine. Too much urine output can then lead to dehydration, leading to increased thirst. A human with early signs of diabetes may also experience an increase in appetite and fatigue. The Fluctuations in glucose level can even lead to blurred vision. Some of these signs may not seem too serious at first but when left untreated it can lead to even bigger symptoms such as infections in the gums, skin, bladder or even vaginal areas. It also effects the healing process of the body, sores that normally wouldn’t take long to heal can take more than twice the time normally needed. Needles are never fun and the thought of having to be stuck by one every day may be horrifying to some, but have no fear there is but one more option. A patient may opt out of injections, if ok by doctor, and take the oral medications. The oral medication, that is prescribed, helps stimulate the pancreas so that it will produce and release insulin on its own. Although, there are many different options to manage diabetes the use of any of these techniques must first be okayed by the patient’s primary doctor. Diabetes is a chronic illness that should never, under any circumstances, be taken lightly. If anyone is experiencing any of the signs or symptoms, listed above, they should follow up with their primary doctor. Knowing the signs and symptoms, the testing process, and the management of Diabetes, may help save a person’s life.
