“Devil Got My Woman” by Skip James has a very slow speed and beat. This song also sounds sad not only in the music but also in the lyrics because it is about a woman who didn’t treat him right and he never should have loved her in the first place. Skip James’ voice was very rustic and he wailed some of the lyrics, giving the song a soulful tone. The instruments of this song seem to be acoustic guitars, which didn’t overpower the singer and his lyrics that appeared to be the main focus of the song.
“Rock Awhile” by Goree Carter is a lot more upbeat than “Devil Got my Woman”, with more swing to it. This song is much faster paced and can be danced to. Also about a woman, this song has more happy lyrics about a woman he loved and how his baby was coming home. There are a lot more instruments to this song like an electric guitar, a piano, a saxophone, percussion, etc. and the song was primarily instrumental, which emphasized these different musical instruments. Goree Carter’s voice was a lot smoother than James’ which made it easy to understand and follow along with, and the strength that came from his vocal style easily pulls you in.

While reading the story, “I Ain’t No Good Girl” by Sharon Flake, I felt like the characters did not really develop the plot as I would have anticipated. The story “I Aint No Good Girl” is primarily about a girl who is madly in love with a guy named Raheem that she is completely blind sighted about the fact that he is abusing, threatening, and gets cheated on. But what aggravates me the most is that even after all that she constantly takes him back.
The Devil and Daniel Webster Movie In the movie and the short story, "The Devil and Daniel Webster", written by Stephen Vincent Benet, there is illustrated the battle between the forces of good and evil. Although the story allows the reader to mentally picture the scenes and the movie does the depicting for the viewer, there are several similarities in each script. Some of these similarities are the way the characters are depicted and the final scene. There are several incongruous scenes between the short story and the way the movie unfolds. The differences are the amount of time that is spent on the character development, also there are some scenes added into the movie such as the harvest dance and the reminder of the contract. There are three main characters in this short story/movie. They are Scratch, Daniel Webster, and Jabez Stone. The actors picked for the roles fit almost perfectly to the descriptions of the characters in the short story. Scratch is described as a " soft-spoken, dark-dressed stranger…white teeth...were filed to a point". As shown in the movie the actor was also a very darkly clad man. He also had a very soft, hypnotic voice and whenever he smiled his teeth were very shiny and pointy. Dave Matthews' first solo album, Some Devil, was released in 2003. It was reviewed as an album much different than the many other's the band has released. Very little "jamming" was put into it and the themes in the lyrics were more morbid and serious as ever before. Some Devil is more about giving Matthews a platform to showcase his singer and songwriter side, by releasing serious and straightforward tunes with a slower beat. The album causes many to ask themselves, could there be an outstanding poet lurking behind Americas favorite "frat" boy band?
Anna Julia Cooper’s, Womanhood a Vital Element in the Regeneration and Progress, an excerpt from A Voice from the South, discusses the state of race and gender in America with an emphasis on African American women of the south. She contributes a number of things to the destitute state African American woman became accustom to and believe education and elevation of the black woman would change not only the state of the African American community but the nation as well. Cooper’s analysis is based around three concepts, the merging of the Barbaric with Christianity, the Feudal system, and the regeneration of the black woman.

In the short story "The Devil & Tom Walker" by Washington Irving, the main character's fate is hell because of his wrong decisions in life, accepting a deal with the devil for earthly benefits. Irving reinforces his message about not making decisions that may damn your soul with the use of literary elements and figurative language. This new genre grew quickly due to the advances in the Radio technologies, also different people with different interests were hearing the radio. Modern authors are no exception to this ideology. In Manuel Puig’s 1976 hit, Kiss of the Spider Woman, the audience is introduced to two characters that inevitably fall into situations of adventure, romance, and deception. These elements are embedded in human kind’s tales all across the ages. The first of the two protagonists, Molina, is an easy-going, homosexual window dresser. Meanwhile, the second of the two protagonists, Valentin, is a non-homosexual, hot-blooded, political anarchist. These two are polar opposites who, in the wilderness of society, do their best to avoid each other’s presence; but being trapped in a prison cell together doesn’t give too much space for options. As the book’s title suggests, there is Spider, and therefore, there must be prey. The question is who is who?
An article from October 1982 “Fighting That Old Devil Rumor” by Sandra Salmans from the Saturday Evening Post talks about what Procter and gamble did to stop a rumor about them that would not go away back in 1982. What is the Purpose of this article though. The purpose is to show how fast rumors can spread, and what they can do to a company. It also shows that the company will fight back in order to keep a positive image, and to help dispense the rest of the rumor. If they are trying to dispense the rest of the rumor they are probably trying to reach adults who are 25 years and older , that are also married. In this respect of the attended audience this article succeeds. Salmans main points throughout this article get through to the intended audience, but more than that what Salmans says throughout the article helps as well. With those two points in mind that is what I use throughout this paper to analyze the article. One of the merits going for the article is when it provides an example of this rumor situation happening to another company. Then later on in the article when Procter and Gamble take charge and start suing people Salmans tells exactly who the people are. Back at the beginning of the article Salmans talks about all the different companies that Procter and Gamble own showing you how severe the situation was.
Most people have many preconceptions about what influenced the popular genre of Rock and Roll. Many think that Rock and Roll was heavily influenced by either Jazz or Blues music, but there are a few scholars who disagree with this thought. Writer Craig Mosher argues the point that pentecostalism was the biggest influence on Rock and Roll. Not only does Mosher think that pentecostalism was the heaviest influence on Rock and Roll, but Randall Stephens also attests that pentecostalism had a large influence on Rock and Roll. However, Stephens takes a much different approach than Mosher by using specific examples, telling the historical background of pentecostalism, and finally gives the church background of famous rockers. Another view on what influenced Rock and Roll is voiced by Michael Allen. Allen states that Blues, R&B, Country and a flare of Gospel music all eclectically influenced Rock and Roll. Allen gives specific examples and talks about the historical context and importance of Rock and Roll. Out of all three authors Mosher most effectively supports his central argument of how pentecostalism was a huge influence on rock and roll.

Jeanne Wakatuski is a young girl who had to endure a rough childhood. She thought herself American, with a Japanese descent. However, with WWII and the internment camps, Jeanne struggled to in understanding who she really was. It started with Manzanar, at first she knew herself as a Japanese American. Living in Manzanar gave her a new perspective, “It (Manzanar) gradually filled me with shame for being a person, guilty of something enormous enough to deserve that kind of treatment” (Houston and Houston 161). Devil on the Cross is a novel written by Ngugi Wa Thiongo in attempt to talk to all Kenyans battling neo-colonialism. Being politically independent, but economically dependent on other countries has evidently had a huge toll on Kenya and its citizens. Kenya is a land where nothing is free. Foreigners had made their way into occupying the land and have used it as a mean of profit for them and a few citizens in Kenya. Through the use of six different characters, Devil on the Cross manages to depict the struggles experienced within the cities of Kenya. The characters of Wariinga, Robin Mwaura, Wangari, Muturi, Gatuiria, and the man in the dark glasses show different experiences of Kenya’s neo-colonialism occurrences.
