It is argued that DeLacey’s inclusion in Frankenstein is only an exculpation for the Monster’s whereabouts, and offers no purport for the development of the story. DeLacey’s in facts, are as paramount to the Monster’s development as Victor physically engendering him. While Victor is responsible for the physical subsistence of the Monster, DeLacey’s are responsible for his existential nature. Through the DeLacey’s interaction, the Monster learns to grow not physically but in his identity. When the Monster first encounters them, he is a newborn thrown into this world without any cognizance of anything. Initially the Monster purloins from villagers and DeLacey’s to survive, but when he learns his actions are causing pain to others he opts to instead survive in suffering. The Monster, despite receiving constant abnegation from society, develops sympathy. He transforms into a giver and he commences to cut wood for DeLacey’s during the night so to avail them. This is very valuable quality the Monster learns because it makes him more human than Victor. Victor never sympathized with Monster and his suffering while this being which initially had no cognizance, learns what penuriousness is and his desideratum to avail them, this only transpires because of the DeLacey’s. He not only learns how to give to others, but he withal learns what love is and the construal behind it. Much akin to sympathy, he learns this emotion by optically discerning DeLacey’s everyday life like a family. He discerns the love between a father and child, in Felix and Old-man DeLacey. He witnesses romantic love between Safi and Felix. Learning about Love makes him realize his solitude and it withal him discern what people are inclined to do for those they dote.
