David Suzuki, born in March 1936, is a Japanese-Canadian environmental activist, a Canadian scientist and a science broadcaster.(2009-David Suzuki, Right Livelihood Award)He has five children, three with his first wife, and two with his second wife. David Suzuki is best known for his broadcasting career and also for his pro-environmental actions.
At the age of 5, David Suzuki’s family had to move to London, Canada, having to close down their business, due to World War II. After they moved to London, Canada, David Suzuki’s family worked in a business owned by his father’s brothers, “Suzuki Brothers Construction Company”.
In 1958, David Suzuki earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from a university located in U.S. After earning a Ph.D. in zoology, at the University of Chicago, he went to the University of British Columbia. While he was studying, he was fighting for the rights of the black Americans, and many people said that, at that time, David Suzuki and Martin Luther King had similar ideologies.
After he graduated, he became an Assistant Professor in Genetics at the University of Alberta. In 1969, David Suzuki won a Steacie Memorial Fellowship for the best young Canadian scientist, and also he became a professor at the University of British Columbia until his retirement in 2001, when he became a Professor Emeritus, and he still holds this title.
David Suzuki became popular in 1971, when he started his national broadcasting career with the show “Suzuki on Science”. In 1990, David Suzuki Foundation was established, with David Suzuki being the co-founder. The David Suzuki Foundation focuses on 5 main points: making Canadians aware of how important the nature is, protecting natural systems, boosting up the economy, protecting our climate and helping the citizens to live a better and healthier life.
David Suzuki is an important role model for people, which influences not only Canada, but also the rest of the world by his actions that protect the environment and the rights of black Americans and Canada’s First Nations. He uses his broadcasting success and his experience as a scientist to warn people about the possible causes of their poor-environmental actions and to also point out the social issues that are happening around the world. David Suzuki is currently living in Vancouver with his wife and children.
The title of the book Samurai Shortstop can play a big role in the book. The title mainly summarizes the book and it gives the reader two sides of the story. One is the version of Toyo playing baseball and his struggle to lead his team even though he was a freshman. In baseball in Ichiko, the seniors had taken all of the spots but Toyo had worked hard and got a spot on the team and had changed all of their lives by teaching them Bushido.
Roger Maris was born in Hibbing, Minnesota on September 10, 1934. His father, who worked for the Great Northern Railroad, moved the family to North Dakota in 1942where Roger grew up. The Maris brothers played sports and attended Shanley High School in Fargo, North Dakota. It was in the 10th grade when Roger met Patricia, his future wife, at a high school basketball game.
Cal Ripken, Jr., was the perfect baseball player. He would play when he had the flu and even when he had a sprained ankle.
For my Mid-Term, I have decided to write about one of the greatest pitchers of all times. His name is Lynn Nolan Ryan Jr. most people know him as Nolan Ryan. He pitched in the Major League from 1967- 1993. He was born on January 31, 1947 in Refugio, Texas. He was the final child of six. He grew up on a street called Dezso Drive in Alvin, Texas. He delivered a paper called the “The Houston Post.” This route was 55 miles long, and so that he could finish, he had to wake up at one and start delivering these papers because his father wanted him to have some responsibility. This would take him four hours to complete.
Throughout the autobiographical narrative written by Gary Soto, many different literary elements are used to recreate the experience of his guilty six-year old self. Different elements such as contrast, repetition, pacing, diction, and imagery. Soto narrates this story as a young boy at a time when he seems to be young and foolish, Soto foolmaking mistakes, but at the same time hoping to learn from them. Soto uses each of these devices to convey different occurrences in the narrative.

David Ortiz is an icon because of his contributions to the welfare of children and to baseball. His charity raises money to give kids medical care that they need or don’t have access to, and trains doctors and nurses. He has made significant contributions to baseball by changing the designated hitter’s role and donating equipment to children in need. If more wealthy people followed Ortiz’s humanitarian values, many of our current problems like poverty, racism and education imbalance would most likely not exist.
In conclusion, David Suzuki is an environmental activist, a hero, a scientist, and a Canadian. There are not enough words to describe the heroic efforts of David Suzuki. Society often emphasizes people in sports, politics and media idols. No one focuses on real heroes – the heroes on the front line of today’s issues. The individuals who are making an impact on the betterment of our future, these are the true heroes worth celebrating and supporting.
Soto earned an English degree at California State University at Fresno in 1974. He continued his education to earn a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing at the University of California at Irvine. While working on his graduate work, Soto married Carolyn Oda, the daughter of Japanese-American farmers.
Persuading viewers to think about their actions as to how they can improve this dilemma. Burtynsky 's projects have completely flipped my perspective of how humans consume the resources around them, slowly collapsing from our own demise. It made me want to change my lifestyle choices to help better and slow environmental change.
Babe Ruth Babe Ruth (George Herman Ruth) has always been known as one of the greatest baseball players this world has ever seen. When he started his career as a Major League Baseball player everyone could tell that he was going to be an original. What he is most remembered for is his incredible ability to smash a ball out of the park or hit the wall every time he came up to bat. Ruth is considered to be one of the greatest baseball legends ever to step to the plate, breaking and keeping many records and establishing him as one of the many top baseball legends to live.
"The only real game, I think, in the world is baseball". This is a quote from Babe Ruth. Baseball wouldn't be what it is today if it weren't for him. People remember him as the greatest baseball player ever. This is what led me to read the book, Heroes of America, Babe Ruth, by Len Canter.
David Berkowitz was one of the most feared killers in New York City in the 1970's. His crimes caused the death of six people, and the injuries to seven others. His crimes became legendary because of the bizarre content in the letters that he wrote to the police and the media and his reasons for committing the attacks. David Berkowitz, better known as Son of Sam, is a man with a troubled childhood and upbringing. From his many “Parental Figures” to believing that dogs were telling him to kill. During his reign of killing the police felt the pressure to catch David. "Operation Omega" was formed, which was comprised of over 200 detectives – all working on finding the Son of Sam before he killed again. He is currently serving a 365 year sentence at the Sullivan Correctional Facility in Fallsburg, New York, and became eligible for parole in 2002.
On February 6, 1895, Kate Schamberger Ruth gave birth to her first child. George Herman Ruth, Jr. was born in the house of his grandparents in Baltimore, Maryland. He was the first of eight children born to Kate and George Herman Ruth. Unfortunately, most of the children died in infancy, and only George, Jr. and his sister Mamie survived to lead a full life. Ruth's father worked as a bartender and ultimately opened his own tavern. He and his wife spent little time with their son because they worked long hours. Contrary to popular belief, young George was not an orphan. For the first seven years of his life he was with his parents, but he survived without guidance on the dirty, crowded streets of the Baltimore riverfront. Young George experienced little, if any, real love from his parents who made no time for their son. Ultimately, they felt that they could no longer care for their son. On June 13, 1902, George Herman Ruth took his seven year-old to St. Mary's Industrial School for Boys. Not only did he place young George in the school, but he also signed over custody of the boy to the Xaverian Brothers, a Catholic Order of Jesuit Missionaries who ran St. Mary's. St. Mary's was both a reformatory and orphanage that was surrounded by a wall similar to a prison with guards on duty. There were approximately 800 children at St. Mary's. The reformatory had four dormitories that housed about 200 kids each.
