Abstract - Over the past 100 years modern science has been responsible for some miraculous inventions to aid the delivery of medical treatment such as the x-ray machine, ultra sound technology and the cochlear implant. One of the latest improvements is in the field of robotic surgery, which is redefining the way in which patients undergo procedures. Not to be confused with computer-aided surgery, robotic surgery utilizes the robot to actually perform the manual tasks of the surgery. In fact, there is no second thought that robotic arm performs the surgery under the assistance of a doctor. In this research paper we have explored the working of robotics arm, the benefits of conducting patients operations via robotic arm, the problems faced in …show more content…
1 Da Vinci Robotic Arm
A. Composition
The most popular example of robotic arm is the Da Vinci Surgical System [4, 5] from Intuitive Surgical. This system is divided into four key elements. Fig. 2a Instruments used by Da Vinci robotic arm Fig. 2b Doctor sitting on his console
• The surgeon’s console allows the surgeon to operate the controls with his or her fingers (Fig. 2b) and specialized tools (Fig. 2a) from a seated position. Fig. 3 Telescopic view seen by doctor at his/her end
• The vision system integrated into the console provides viewing of the surgical field via a 3D image. It features a tiny telescope, which is placed inside an incision in the patient’s body. The telescope takes images from two points, which are relayed back to a console so the surgeon has a 3D image on-screen while he operates (Fig. 3).
• The patient-side cart comprises three or four robotic arms, two or three instrument arms and one endoscope arm that perform the commands as dictated by the surgeon.
• Wrist instruments enable the surgeon to perform tasks such as clamping and stitching as they are designed with seven degrees of motion that mimic the dexterity of the human hand and wrist.

This product won't see that kind of commercial application for a long time. Right now, its goal is to help patients with paralysis. This technology is supported by a video that demonstrates the technology shows a 58-year-old woman who has been physically paralyzed for 15 years. She has no control of her arms or legs. And yet, with BrainGate's robotic arm, she was able to grasp a thermos, raise it to her mouth, and drink. That's the level of precision that the incredible device offers. According to BrainGate, this marked the first time in 15 years that the woman was able to have a sip of coffee without the help of another person. The implications are of course potentially vast. These are the kinds of stories that are hidden in upcoming
The Canadarm was designed by M.d Robotics to not have any fixed ends so it could crawl along the space station to repair or to move parts on the Space Station. The Canadian arm is 17.6(55ft) long with 7 motorized joints that can turn 540 degrees. The arm is controlled by an astronaut inside the space station, the astronaut is able to see through 4 color cameras that will help him control the arm in how it’s suppose to be used.
Surgical technologist have a fulfilling and adventurous job, being a technical assistant to the surgeon’s, with a number of tasks ahead of them, and problems that will go on, with an outcoming salary that will make a good living in life.
Recently, articular surgery robot named ‘ROBODOC’ or ‘RIO’ has been widely used for arthritis or arthroplasty. Both robots consist of arthroscope and tiny surgical instruments. Many surgeons estimated that articular surgery using these robots is more accurate, elaborate than using an arthroscope and small surgical instrument,
Robotic Surgery is an emerging technology that utilizes purpose-built robots to perform surgical procedures on patients. At present these robots are not autonomous, they are controlled by a surgeon at all times.
Shanthi Pathirana and Pca Kam wrote “Anesthetic Issues in Robot-Assisted Minimally Invasive Surgery” to inform readers of what they considered the greatest danger of robotic surgery. They argue that using anesthesia on patients undergoing robotic operations is dangerous due to the positions the patients are in, environment of the operating room, and preparation that robotic operations require. They examined different robotic procedures and researched which procedures were the most dangerous. They found that during a prostatectomy the table tilts the patient’s body with the feet above the head, which limits blood flow; a sheet covers the patient’s head, which limits the esthetician’s ability to see the patient’s breathing; and the robotic arms

This is a type of laparoscopic procedure in which surgical instruments will be controlled with the help of a robotic arm.
I chose the Da Vinci Surgical system as my topic because I am interested into going to physical therapy or into the orthopedics field after undergrad. Surgical equipment is highly important due to the hundreds of accidents that happen and also the high percentage of diseases. As these incidents occur it is important to consider the safety of the patient when it comes to cutting into their bodies. With the invention of the Da Vinci Surgical system it helped with vision and different viewpoints of the patient’s body and also improves precision. It is important to have a machine or tool for more than one type of surgery, one to use on patients with different injuries or diseases. Overall, this surgical system helps improve and help further research how precise and how in control a surgeon can be.
...y within a medical setting has stepped away from the shadows and into a brighter future with the development of the da Vinci Surgical System in the medical world. Before the surgical robot, doctors or surgeons would have had to make several incisions to their patient’s body, which would cause the patients recovery to be elongated and possibly painful. The da Vinci Surgical System allows surgeons to make smaller, less visible incisions to the patient’s body and have a better precision during the procedure. Throughout several years, surgeons relied on their typical laparoscopic surgery to be able to provide patients with the procedures that required them to make large incisions through the patient’s abdomen. Nowadays, surgeons and their patients can have a sigh of relief because the surgical robot provides surgeons with the precision that they long strived for.
There were two scrub technicians. They prepared a clean and sterile field, before each case, dressed up in the ppe, and followed surgical asepsis precautions. Their main job while doing the procedure was to provide the surgeon with the materials in which were needed in an appropriate time manner. Before the surgery took place, the ST received a card of what type of supplies were needed, by the surgeon. When the surg...
Biomechanical engineering is driven by needs similar to those of biomedical engineering. There is always a constant need to improve medical equipment while keeping it cost efficient. These are the two main needs for all biomedical engineers. Biomechanical engineering is specifically dedicated to applying the scientific of knowledge mechanical systems and engineering to biology and the human body. One of the many needs that drives this biomedical subfield is society’s need for more advanced equipment and machinery. Some recent advances show this need. In the last decade, biomechanical engineers have invented and innovated new robots and machines that can assist a surgeon in surgery or serve as an artificial liver. These machines satisfy the need to improve and innovate new equipment that can save lives and improve how people in the medical field perform their
Haptics can be found in wide range of devices. In the extreme with respect to precision, surgical simulators use haptics to provide realistic forces that emulate the feel of a real medical procedure. In the extreme with respect to the magnitude of t...
