Crime Scenario: This case is about a missing 9 year old boy who lives with his mother, younger sister, and his mother 's boyfriend. The child has been missing for over 24 hours and the boyfriend seems very protective of the mother and answers most of the questions about the disappearance. The scene is overwrought with the media, neighbors, and volunteers offering to help with the search for the missing boy. Interview Preparation: Suspects in this case would initially be the mother because of her silence and the boyfriend, because of his overwhelming need to be protective and answer all of the questions as well as since they live with him and possibly the father since he does not. If I felt I was getting nowhere or that they were being deceitful and non-cooperative I would then read them both their Miranda rights and ask them if they understood them and would like to still talk to me, I would do this because I was already suspicious enough at the scene to tell them I wanted to meet with them at the station. I would, however remind them that they can stop the questions at any time by invoking their rights again. I would also call for someone qualified to talk with the younger sister in a room where she would feel more comfortable such as a room that looked kid friendly with toys and something to write and draw with. In one of Law & Order’s “ripped from the headlines” episodes titled “House Counsel,” a juror in a mob trial is found dead. Law enforcement investigates and learns that the mobster tampered with the juror in order to avoid a conviction and then killed him to keep him quiet. The lawyer defending the mobster is a good friend of Assistant District Attorney Jack McCoy. Later in the investigation, McCoy discovers that his friend may have played a role in the jury tampering. When he suspects his friend is involved, McCoy sees an opportunity to get the mobster and prosecutes the attorney for the murder to leverage information about the mobster. In the end, the lawyer is convicted and the attorney-client privilege between the lawyer and the mobster is dissolved.
The city coroner was contacted and responded to the scene. The coroner identified the deceased as 23 year-old Rod Dixon. The coroner inspected the victim and relayed he was shot four times at close range. I made contact with a witness who stated he saw four black men in the park last night. The method I would use to find the suspect (s) in the shooting began with the witnesses accomplishing written statements on what they saw or heard and look at a lineup of photos to help identify the suspects.

In the show Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, in the episode “Wonderland”, Sarah Walsh was a victim of rape. She was unaware of who had raped her but eventually found out her rapist appeared to be one of her “friends” who was very wealthy. By engaging in comparative criminal justice studies, one can expand this knowledge through the discovery of similarities and differences in the structure of criminal justice agencies of various nations or states. There are a multitude of factors which could contribute to the differences in each nation’s criminal justice system. By studying the ways in which other countries operate their criminal justice system, it may be possible to learn ways in which we could better our own system. The entire criminal justice system can be very frightening and even intimidating if someone fails to understand the meaning of terms used, procedures, laws, and rules (Cook, 2009). Criminal law is among the terms that have been defined differently by various sources. It is mainly concerned with a system of legal rules defining actions that are classified as crimes and the manner of which the government prosecutes people who commit crimes (Snyman, 2014). According to the chapter, some sources use it in a way that is very general that describes it as the entire spectrum of laws that deal with the criminal justice system while others use shorthand ways which terms it as substantive criminal law, which is very true.

In the context of this class and the concept of planetary urbanism, I chose this case study from South Africa to offer another perspective on gated communities in a global context. As I’ve mentioned before, Western gated communities are better known that such enclaves from other parts of the world. Additionally, South Africa offers an extensive background on crimi-nal activities and urban fear among the population. The following case study by Karina Landman focuses on the Gauteng Province (which includes South Africa’s capital Pretoria as well as Johannesburg) from an urban planning perspective. With the concept of urban fear in mind, I will exemplify how fear of crime influences the urban area inside and outside of gated commu-nities.
I wanted to look at the investigative and criminal procedures following the arrest of an alleged criminal and the powerful effects via testimonies and evidence (or lack thereof) it can have on a case.There is an importance of the courts in regards to crime that can’t be over looked. Written regulations in today 's society defines criminal behaviour (Morley & Hall, 2003, p. 2). Morley & Hall (2003) state that there is three ways of defining criminal behaviour. The first approach is that criminal behaviour is defined as one engaging in criminal acts that are against the written regulations of society, this can lead to those being punished by law; arrested and convicted. The second approach when defining criminal behaviour is to follow the criteria set in place when diagnosing those with Antisocial Personality Disorder, as this disorder is linked with a high risk of committing criminal activities. The final approach to defining criminal behaviour according to Morley & Hall (2003) is to take into account personality traits of individuals, such as aggression, as it is normally associated with high levels of criminal activity. Crime analysis relies heavily on computer technology, and over the past fifteen years there has been a significant improvement in computer hardware and software that has led to tremendous developments in this field. One form of hardware that is used by Crime analysts to complete most of their work is Desktop personal computers, laptop computers are also used by crime analysts for fieldwork and presentations. Other forms of hardware that are used include color laser printers that can produce high-quality documents quickly, plotters which are printers that can produce large poster size color maps, scanners, and digital cameras, these specific types of hardware is mostly used by police departments when analyzing crime.

I just want you to know... it ain't where I been, but where I'm about to go.” Although he wasn't referring to criminals in the hit song, his words strike a chord in regards to the “Hustlers” discussed in, “Burglars on the Job.” There are a plethora of internal and external factors that motivate a person to commit crimes such as burglary, but through background factors alone we cannot say for certain why a crime was committed by a select person. It is vital to study and begin to understand why people commit crimes as well as how they view their behavior. History and statistics have shown that simply adjusting our justice system to neutralize these offenders has had little to no impact on crime in our nation. Professors Richard T. Wright and Scott Decker risked their lives to further an academic study that sheds light on the perspective of burglars and how they interpret what they do. Many theorists believe that criminals are utilitarian and carefully weigh the potential costs and rewards of their illegal actions (p4). These two gentlemen, however, postulated that there are multiple facets of criminals to discover and consider through intimate contact in the field. While Chambliss and Polsky were hesitant to work “In the wild,” Wright and Decker felt that this was the best way to collect accurate data.
