Crime Scenario: This case is about a missing 9 year old boy who lives with his mother, younger sister, and his mother 's boyfriend. The child has been missing for over 24 hours and the boyfriend seems very protective of the mother and answers most of the questions about the disappearance. The scene is overwrought with the media, neighbors, and volunteers offering to help with the search for the missing boy. Interview Preparation: Suspects in this case would initially be the mother because of her silence and the boyfriend, because of his overwhelming need to be protective and answer all of the questions as well as since they live with him and possibly the father since he does not. If I felt I was getting nowhere or that they were being deceitful and non-cooperative I would then read them both their Miranda rights and ask them if they understood them and would like to still talk to me, I would do this because I was already suspicious enough at the scene to tell them I wanted to meet with them at the station. I would, however remind them that they can stop the questions at any time by invoking their rights again. I would also call for someone qualified to talk with the younger sister in a room where she would feel more comfortable such as a room that looked kid friendly with toys and something to write and draw with.
