Throughout the years, there has been a discussion questioning if college education is really worth the time and cost. Many individuals believe college is too expensive, while others believe it is worth the effort and sacrifice. I agree that college education is worth the effort and sacrifice along with the costs of books, on campus housing, and day to day expenses. “If the goal is to earn a living, then, maybe it isn’t really true that 18 year olds need to be imparted with a sense of panic about getting into college.” I disagree with this statement said by Matthew Crawford, in order to obtain a living you must have an education, a higher education that will allow you to attain a job with a high paying salary. David Leonhardt states that “Education helps people do higher skilled work, get jobs with better paying companies or open their own businesses.” Although college has many time consuming steps to receive your degree, it is all worth the wait. I strongly side with Leonhardt for one reason, by having a college education you have a higher percentage rate of getting a higher paying job than those that have no college education. By possessing a degree from college you are eye candy to many businesses, businesses look and will hire an individual with a college education not only in the view of having a degree in a certain work area, but they are experienced and well informed. Businesses will not want to hire someone with no knowledge of the field of work, even if they understand what they are doing. Businesses look for and go with their natural instinct, the instinct to hire someone that is erudite of what they are doing. You don’t need a college degree to have a good paying job. Not attending college affects ones literacy of financial awareness, their ability to receive a job, and their ability to carry our responsibilities.

Lankford, an editor and writer for the journal The Rising Cost of College, and Richard Vedder, a writer and economics professor at Ohio University, have written articles on their views of college costs and the reasons they think why it is so steep. Lankford, author of Introduction to the Rising Cost of College, explains why he thinks college costs are so high and how it affects people. Vedder, author of Pell Grants Raise the Cost of College and Cause Education Inequality, cites Pell Grants and financial aid as important factors in the rising cost of college. Although both authors offer strong arguments, I think Vedder presents the stronger argument because he has more credibility, being and economics professor.

In the mid 1900’s college students were able to pay for their tuition with money they made from their summer jobs (Paul F. Campos). It’s beyond belief that “over the past 35 year’s college tuition as public universities has nearly quadrupled” (Paul F. Campos). This is also becoming a problem to families who now cannot afford to send their children to college. The question that many people across America want to know is why is public college so expensive? College is overly priced because of the need for money for lost state funding, and the many amenities colleges build to attract students to their campus.

Statistics show that students who have a college degree have a lower unemployment percentage than the people with a high school diploma. In the article “Is A College Education Worth It?” produced by ProCon.Org. They recorded “In 2015, 6.2% of college graduates were underemployed (insufficient work), compared to 12.9% of high school-only graduates” (“Is A College Education Worth It?”). As one can see there is a drastic difference when comparing these facts. Lower unemployment is better because it is used to measure economic health within a community. On the contrary, many may argue Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, or Oprah were successful college dropouts. However, the chances of a person becoming successful college dropout is rare. Today students are expected to follow the path of elementary school, middle school and college. We are raised to believe that one needs higher education in order to succeed in life. College education is no longer an option, but has become necessity. But being able to go to college has become like a dream for some students because of the rising costs. College costs are getting so high that it is hurting students education, students are coming out of college and are unable to attend university of their choice.

To find employment, the quality of jobs we get generally goes up according to how much college education we have. There are employment opportunities for individuals with and without a degree. However, with a degree, it is possible to explore more options and create a better future. While there are employment opportunities for those who do not have a college degree, earning a degree it important because it opens the door to gainful employment, allows one to negotiate benefits, and helps one remain employed.
