Hi, my name is Marshall Derence and I’m a constituent of pro-gun control mailing from Woodstock Georgia. I’m writing about the gun lobby’s attempts to push its dangerous agenda through Congress. This includes the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act, a bill that would severely threaten public safety and put law enforcement at risk. You all have the difficult job of upholding the U.S. Constitution, which is an unwieldy and sometimes contradictory document that is designed to give the best opportunity for competing interests to coexist peacefully in our society. Your duty is laid out in the Preamble: “We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.” The gun lobby/NRA, in its stringent defense of the principles in the Second Amendment, has overstepped the principles of the Preamble and fostered a legislative environment that is destructive to domestic tranquility …show more content…

I am still very angry and terribly saddened when about a month ago, another mass shooting occurred at a high school in Florida. Videos and photos showed the horror of innocent children running out of a high school in Florida, hands up, in a straight line, crying and shaking in fear. My question to you senators is “How many more times will the U.S have to witness this type of unnecessary carnage before our Congress starts doing something about universal background checks for people purchasing guns, and outlawing the sale of assault weapons that wreak havoc when in the hands of the wrong people?” It is truly mind-boggling that the NRA is so powerful and supports so many of our congressmen and women that none of them have the backbones to fight back in fear that they may lose their jobs in the next election. Eliot Spitzer said, “Yes, people pull the trigger - but guns are the instrument of death. Gun control is necessary, and delay means more death and horror.”. Mr. Rubio and Mr. Nelson I implore you that you actually comanche some kind of the change for the better. Our nation makes up a little more than 4% of the world population and owns more than 40% of the world's weaponry. We can support our Second Amendment without ownership of assault weapons that were produced for war, and insist upon having stronger background checks on people
