The movie, Percy Jackson and the Olympians The Lightning Thief, has been modernized from the story, “Danaüs, Perseus, and the Gorgon,” in many ways such as: the plot and all the enemies he faced, the character types such as Percy’s friends that helped him through his journey, and how Percy's life was modified from Perseus’s. Among these, the two boys faced great danger. Perseus and Percy faced many challenges along the way. They were tested, they met allies, and they faced enemies. Along this journey they realized that they needed to protect others, and fight for their own safety.First of all, Perseus wanted to protect his mother from a king who wanted to marry her. Both Percy and Perseus had a god as their father, Perseus’s father was Zeus and Percy’s father was Poseidon, but their mothers were mortal. This made them demigods. Demigods usually have special powers like super strength or being able to fly, however they are in human form. Also, they are raised humans on Earth. Percy was developed to have a different lifestyle then Perseus as being a normal, American teenager. Perseus, however, was in contact with gods, such as, “As he stood at a crossroad wondering which way to go, Athena and Hermes suddenly showed up.” (D'aulaires,117) A king wanted to marry Perseus’s mother but she refused because he was ruthless. The author states, “ He wanted her for his queen. In vain did Danaё turn him away.”(D'aulaires,116) Percy’s mother,Sally Jackson, married a guy, Gabe, who was horrible to both Percy and Sally. Gabe treated Sally like she was a maid and Percy hated that, and as soon as he returned the lightning, they did not need Gabe anymore. Both the story and the movie had the same theme; this was Good vs. Evil. One of the main characters in both Percy Jackson and Perseus was Medusa, she was one of the ‘evils’ that they had to face. When Medusa first appeared in Percy Jackson, Percy needed to get one of three pearls from her necklace. He then used his pen sword to cut off her head, just like Perseus did(Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief). In the story, “Perseus swooped down, and with one deft stroke he cut off Medusa’s head,¨ (D'aulaires,118) Perseus had great help with navigating and slaying the monster. Zeus had sent Athena and Hermes to help Perseus. D’aulaires states, “Athena lent him her shield, polished as brightly as a mirror. Hermes lent him his sword, which was so sharp that it could cut through the hardest metal…” (D'aulaires,117) Percy had help from Athena’s daughter, Annabeth, and Hermes’s son, Luke. Annabeth came up with the strategies and was definitely both moral support and helped Percy fight the battles. Luke gave Percy shoes that could fly. This came in handy when he was fighting the gigantic, Hydra. However, Luke was actually setting them up, Luke wanted to take power in both the mortal and god world. This made it easy to tell the good and the bad in the world. Percy and Perseus were full of light and good and they had to fight evil for the protection of their mother and the rest of the world(in the case of Percy
