Theme is a subject or topic of the story. It can also be the lesson or moral that the creator wants to get across to the reader. In Mr. Kipling's short story, “Rikki-Tikki-Tavi,” I know for a fact that the theme for this story is evil is punished and good is rewarded. I know this because the antagonists do bad things throughout the story and soon die. Another example was when Darzee’s wife distracted the female cobra so that the protagonist in the story could get the eggs. However, I can see why people would think the lesson of the story is to never give up, but I know for a fact that it is wrong and I can prove it. I believe that the theme for this story is evil is punished and good is rewarded. Nag, Nagaina, and Karait are excellent examples of evil, and Rikki is a wonderful example of good. It is very clear that the protagonist in this story is Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, and Nagaina and the other cobras are clearly the antagonists. For instance, the mongoose was rewarded with love and trust from his family when he defeated Nag and Nagaina. Another example is when Rikki’s family helped him overcome the flood. They were rewarded with a mongoose by their side to protect them at all times. The last example was when Darzee warned Rikki that Nagaina was coming up behind him. Darzee was …show more content…

To start off, Karait is a young cobra and a bully. He also taunts Rikki with the words “I am death!”. Unfortunately for him he dies instantly. As can be seen in the story, Nagaina makes a very wrong decision and leaves all of her eggs to catch Darzee’s wife. As a result all of her eggs get exterminated by Rikki, except one. Another example was when Nagaina missed her strike on the protagonist and it ended up with her getting bit on the tail. The last example is when Nag faced up to fight the protagonist, however he ran off when Nagaina missed her
