Theme is a subject or topic of the story. It can also be the lesson or moral that the creator wants to get across to the reader. In Mr. Kipling's short story, “Rikki-Tikki-Tavi,” I know for a fact that the theme for this story is evil is punished and good is rewarded. I know this because the antagonists do bad things throughout the story and soon die. Another example was when Darzee’s wife distracted the female cobra so that the protagonist in the story could get the eggs. However, I can see why people would think the lesson of the story is to never give up, but I know for a fact that it is wrong and I can prove it. I believe that the theme for this story is evil is punished and good is rewarded. Nag, Nagaina, and Karait are excellent examples of evil, and Rikki is a wonderful example of good. It is very clear that the protagonist in this story is Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, and Nagaina and the other cobras are clearly the antagonists. For instance, the mongoose was rewarded with love and trust from his family when he defeated Nag and Nagaina. Another example is when Rikki’s family helped him overcome the flood. They were rewarded with a mongoose by their side to protect them at all times. The last example was when Darzee warned Rikki that Nagaina was coming up behind him. Darzee was …show more content…
To start off, Karait is a young cobra and a bully. He also taunts Rikki with the words “I am death!”. Unfortunately for him he dies instantly. As can be seen in the story, Nagaina makes a very wrong decision and leaves all of her eggs to catch Darzee’s wife. As a result all of her eggs get exterminated by Rikki, except one. Another example was when Nagaina missed her strike on the protagonist and it ended up with her getting bit on the tail. The last example is when Nag faced up to fight the protagonist, however he ran off when Nagaina missed her
In the book Rikki crushes all but one egg of Nagaina’s to bribe Nagaina into staying away from the kid. Rikki said, “What’sthe price for a snake’s egg? For a young cobra? For a king cobra? For the last-the very last of the brood? The ants are eating all the others by the melon bed.” Also in the book the snake flees with the egg trying to outrun Rikki. In the book it states, “He had forgotten about the egg. It lay on the veranda and Nagaina came nearer and nearer to it, til at last, while Rikki-Tikki was drawing breath, She caught it in her mouth, turned to the veranda steps, and flew like an arrow down the path.” Also in the movie the mongoose booked it right into the snake hole where many mongooses never come out. (movie) The movie shows “Rikki chasing Nagaia down a hole where the snake lived.” Also in the movie Rikki killed Nagaina, and whatever cobra ever dared to try to threaten him or the family. In conclusion that is how the Resolution is related to the book and the
An idea that recurs in or pervades a work of art of literature can be referred to as a “Theme”. Themes often explore timeless and universal ideas and may be implied rather than stated explicitly. Theme is an important part of fictional stories. Several themes are presented in the novel to kill a mocking bird. One of the reoccurring themes in to kill a mockingbird is courage.
In To Kill a Mockingbird, the theme plays an important role during the course of the novel. Theme is a central idea in a work of literature that contains more than one word. It is usually based on an author’s opinion on a subject. The theme of innocence should be protected is found in conflicts, characters, and symbols. In To Kill a Mockingbird, a conflict that connects to the theme that innocence should be protected is the death of Tom Robinson.
In the beginning Rikki Tikki is washed away from his home in a flood, then is rescued by humans. He decides to stay and meets Nag and Nagaina ,two king cobras who try to kill him. The young boy who saved Rikki finds him in the garden but Karait a deadly but small snake shows up and Rikki kills him to save the boy Teddy. Later Nag and Nagaina get into the house to kill the humans and Rikki finds out, he is fighting Nag when the man shoots Nag and kills him. Rikki goes out the next day and destroys all Nagaina’s eggs. Nagaina goes to the humans and is going to bite the Teddy but Rikki starts to fight her. They go down a hole and Rikki comes up victorious and Nagaina is dead. He goes back to the people's house and they are thankful for him. Rikki then on protects the garden from snakes forever.
Theme is the subject of talk, a topic, or morals that the author is trying to get readers to comprehend. When reading an excerpt, the theme is not directly stated in the text, so you must dig deeper into the context to understand the matter trying to be portrayed. In both Angela's Ashes and The Street, we can distinguish a like theme of struggling through life’s complications. After reading the two different stories, we could select the theme from using character, events, and the setting.
...rves the way for the plot, the theme is the central idea around which a literary piece revolves. Without the theme the plot would be meaningless and there would be nothing for the readers to derive from the literary piece. Without the plot, the theme would be meaningless as there would be nowhere to consign the message the writer intends to give the reader. It can be said that the plot and theme are the two most important literary elements of a literary piece and are inter-dependant.
Theme is the underlying power beneath a story; the “force” that makes the whole experience worthwhile. Theme is “an idea or message that the writer wishes to convey” (Holt 874). A theme can be either stated or implied. A stated theme is a theme “that the other expresses directly in his work (protic.net); an implied theme is a theme “that is not directly stated in the work” (protic.net). As mentioned before, both of these stories have an implied theme, which now is revealed to mean that the author of the story insinuated it. Themes exist in all stories (verbal or written) and can be long, short, true or false. “Earth people will beat out any other intelligent life-form in any and all competitions” is a theme, but “good always beats evil” is one too. “Once upon a time . . .” stories have themes too, except they are more one-dimensional. For example,...
On the other hand, many disagree and believe that Rikki TIkki Tavi is innocent and was defending himself and others from the snakes. One of the first incriminating details about the snakes was that when Rikki Tikki Tavi arrived to the garden he learned that Nag had eaten one of Darzee’s children that fell from the nest. This is why both Rikki Tikki Tavi and the readers immediately have a bad impression of the snakes even if the baby bird who fell would have died on impact or fell because of irresponsible parents. The second piece of incriminating evidence is that the snakes attacked Rikki Tikki Tavi first so of course Rikki has the right to fight back. However I feel that the reason they attacked first was because of the nature of the mongoose, they knew to attack first otherwise they would
Rikki tikki is an amazing mongoose who saves many animals and his human family in a story, Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, written by Rudyard Kipling, an amazing writer. The story takes place someplace in India. More specific, in a bungalow and garden some place in India. A bungalow is a type of house in India and a garden is a yard. A few of the main characters are Rikki-Tikki and the cobra snakes. The cobra snakes are Nag and Nagina, a cobra is a type of snake in India. With all the amazing plot twists in this story, it’ll be exciting to see what comes next. In the story Rikki saves his family by killing the two cobras and their brood. Rikki should definitely be proud of himself, for saving all those people and garden animals. He also didn’t try to kill
“Rikki-Tikki knew that he must catch her (Nagaina) or all of the trouble would begin again.” (p.g 26) After stealing the last egg from Nagaina, he tried to negotiate a deal with her. Rikki Tikki wanted Nagaina to leave the garden and never return, but the cycle would just repeat itself. If Rikki let Nagaina go, the egg would hatch and a new cobra would emerge and continue to terrorize the garden’s animals. Nagaina tried to escape Rikki-Tikki, but she knew he would never stop until she was gone. Rikki could have let her go, but his tenacity did not allow him to be
One example of the theme occurs when the author first introduces the story. “But the summer I was 9 years old, the town I had always loved morphed into a beautifully heartbreaking and complicated place.” (pg. 1). The author is saying that the year she turned nine, she found out something about her town that broke her heart and changed the way she saw it. This quote is important because it supports the theme. It shows that now she is older she has learned something about her town that made her wiser than when she was younger. She is now more informed because the new information changed her and caused her to begin to mature.
Theme plays a very important part in this short story. Theme is the idea of a literary work abstracted from its details of language, character and action. The great example of theme that is evident throughout the entire short story is the duty to perform certain acts. We can see here that the Irishman Donovan is very big on obeying his duty to carry out orders that have been authorized to him.
The theme in a story is the message or big idea that the author is trying to reveal in his or her narrative. If there was no underlining theme in Sherman Alexie’s short story, “This Is What It Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona” then readers would have no interest in reading the fictional story. Understanding the message that Alexie is trying to display to his readers can vary in many ways and depends on the reader 's understanding of the story. Strong themes that are presented in the fictional tale are man versus self conflict, family, and tribal identity. Victor is a tribal member that has had a rough life and has to deal with his father passing away. Not only does he have to come to terms with his father 's death, but he also has to face his
Does being the antagonist always mean you are evil? In AELA this year, we read a short story called Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, by Rudyard Kipling. In the story, the main character, a mongoose named Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, is washed out of his home, and taken in by a family of people. In the backyard, there are two snakes, Nag, and his wife Nagaina. Rikki has to fight the snakes in order to ‘save’ himself, and the other creatures in the backyard. That is, however, only Rikki’s side of the story. This essay is about Nagaina, and how she may be more than just an evil antagonist. In the story, Nagaina is not only sly, but also intelligent and caring. Almost everything Nagaina did was for her children, still eggs at the time.
For an abundance of authors, the driving force that aids them in creation of a novel is the theme or number of themes implemented throughout the novel. Often times the author doesn’t consciously identify the theme they’re trying to present. Usually a theme is a concept, principle or belief that is significant to an author. Not only does the theme create the backbone of the story, but it also guides the author by controlling the events that happen in a story, what emotions are dispersed, what are the actions of characters, and what emotions are presented within each environment to engage the readers in many
