Does helping the poor, saving lives, shielding families and inspiring individuals interest you or do you feel that it is your duty to uplift individuals in social classes? The purpose of this paper is to compare and contrast Jane Addams and William Sumner. Although Addams and Sumner bear some superficial similarities, the differences between the both of them are clear. Although Addams and Sumner share a similar background, they each have their own worldview on people that are poverty stricken and individuals that are wealthy. She grew up without a mother, but had a prosperous father. Addams assisted with bringing attention to the opportunity of revolutionizing America’s approach toward the poor. In 1889, alongside her friend, Jane Addams, founded the Hull House in Chicago. The Hull House assisted underprivileged people who needed help, care and love. One of the challenges that Addams faced and wanted to overcome was to mandate legislation on the local, state and federal levels. By doing so it would allow all individuals to receive the assistance needed in spite of race, sex, religion or social class. Her desire was to be a self-sacrificing giver to the poor and advocate for women’s rights and change laws that would help put a stop to poverty. Addams advocated for anti child labor laws to limit the hours that a woman can work, mandate schooling for children and she wanted to protect immigrants from exploration. Addams took action to the needs of the community by starting a nursery, dispensary, playground, and gymnasium and provided kindergarten, day care facilities for children of working mothers and accommodating housing for young working women. Sumner graduated from Yale University and upon graduating he went back to the university becoming a professor. Sumner was the first to teach a course titled “Sociology”. Addams, on the other hand, did not attend the college that she had chosen, Smith College. Instead, she had the opportunity to attend Rockford Female Seminary. This specific college was a missionary college. Another similarity between Addams and Sumner is that they both came from families that were considered well rounded. Additionally, they both lost their mothers at a fairly young age. Sumner comes from a hardworking family. Addams’ main influence in her childhood was her father, John Addams. The narratives of both Harriet Jacobs and Elizabeth Keckley narrate how their slave owners abused them sexually. Jacobs was a house worker and her parents were also slaves, his father was part of the skilled workers group. Keckley was a house and field worker and her parents were also slave field workers. She worked with politics around the world and tried to bring healthcare and reform to people around the world. Using the lessons she learned in her childhood she worked closely with people from all backgrounds to fight for “universal brotherhood”. Wald was a progressive reformer, a social worker, a nurse, a teacher, and an author. Notably Lillian Wald, unlike many of the other women involved in the progressive movement such as Jane Adams, never received the same acknowledgement in the academic world.

In the documents titled, William Graham Sumner on Social Darwinism and Andrew Carnegie Explains the Gospel of Wealth, Sumner and Carnegie both analyze their perspective on the idea on “social darwinism.” To begin with, both documents argue differently about wealth, poverty and their consequences. Sumner is a supporter of social darwinism. While reading these documents it has shown and expressed to the audience that based off of a person’s position in society it will allow for their opinions and views of our world to be noticeably different. Each of the authors in this document all have somewhat different yet similar views and explanations of the times during 1870-1895. A lot of the views on the business production and the politics are highly differed based off ones role in society. A few of the authors of the sources such as, Andrew Carnegie and Jay Gould were each part of a higher class within the Gilded Age, their views on the business industry was that the government should not get involved with ones actions in the business world. This paper explores Peter Singer’s argument, in Famine, Affluence, and Morality, that we have morally required obligations to those in need. The explanation of his argument and conclusion, if accepted, would dictate changes to our lifestyle as well as our conceptions of duty and charity, and would be particularly demanding of the affluent. Andrew Carnegie, a Scottish-American steel tycoon and one of the wealthiest men of the nineteenth century, believes that social inequality results as an inexorable byproduct of progress. In his 1889 article entitled “Wealth,” Carnegie claims that it is “essential” for the advancement of the human race that social divisions between the rich and poor exist, which separate those “highest and best in literature and the arts” who embody the “refinements of civilization” from those who do not (105).
