The colonisation of Australia occurred throughout 1788-1990. During this time, Great Britain discovered Australia and decided that it would become a new British colony (“Australian History: Colonisation 17-88-1990”, 2014.). It was decided that convicts would be sent to Australia and used for labour to build the new colony. There are many health determinants that are effecting the health of Indigenous Australians including; poor living conditions, risk behaviours and low socioeconomic status. Many of these determinants have an effect on the Indigenous Australians due to the colonisation of Australia.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders have a lower life expectancy than the rest of the Australian population. In 2010 the life expectancy for Indigenous Australian men was 69.1 years and 73.7 years for women (ABS, 2010). Figured taken in 2010-2012 show that the life expectancy of aboriginal men is 10.6 years below the non-indigenous male and for the indigenous females it is 9.5 years below the non-indigenous females (ABS, 2010-2012).

Poor living conditions are a major health determinant throughout the indigenous population. Most Indigenous Australians are known to live in rural parts of Australia which are commonly not close to major cities and services. People living in these areas generally have poorer health than others living in the cities and other parts of Australia. These individuals do not have as much access to health services and good quality housing. In 2006 roughly 14% of indigenous households in Australia were overcrowded unlike 5% of other households (AIHW, 2009a). Overcrowded and poor quality houses are commonly associated with poor physical and mental health between the people living in them. The indigenous are n...

...s a way of coping with bad memories and changes in culture (Reser, 1991). Many Indigenous are still being affected by the events which unfolded long ago. Alcohol is consumed by many who are known to have mental disorders. Depression is a major issue within the aboriginal population with many suffering with factors like grief, shame, worry, homesickness, and anger due to the colonization and the way it has changed their everyday life, culture and environment (Reser).

Overall the colonization of Australian is a major health determinant for Indigenous Australians in many ways. Many Indigenous Australians are still being affected by the invasion and are trying to live life in a new way to what they are accustomed to. The colonization led to many deaths, diseases, wars, violence and lifestyle changes which will all continue to make life difficult for the Indigenous.
