You should have the right to free speech where ever for equality and justice. Kneeling does not show disrespect towards our flag or our veterans. The veterans of our country did not fight for us to stand for a symbol that you may or may not believe. They fought for us to have the right to free speech for equality and justice. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. received a Nobel Prize and was honored by the President of the United States for his contributions to society. On the other hand, he was prosecuted, convicted, incarcerated, and had his sentence had to be reaffirmed by the Supreme Court. It is hard to understand why he was incarcerated if what he did was noble. When we take into account these manifestations of the government's attitude towards Martin Luther King, we can safely make the assumption that the government is not always justified in the laws that it creates. Our government's original purpose was to keep order and ensure freedom to its people.
On August 27, 2016, Steven Wyche, a media reporter for the National Football League, wrote a story about San Francisco Forty-Niners quarterback Colin Kaepernick and Kaepernick’s choice in acting on a movement to oppose racial discrimination of minorities. Wyche’s story was published through the NFL for the public eye to view. Kaepernick has been refusing stand for the national anthem. Not only does Wyche cover Kaepernick’s controversial actions, but Wyche takes a stand for Kaepernick himself.
Throughout history there have been many struggles for freedom and equality. There was the civil rights movement led by Martin Luther King Jr. There was the fight against government censorship in Argentina, spoken against by Luisa Valenzuela. And there was the struggle for women's equality in politics, aided by First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. Of the three, Martin Luther King Jr was the most persuasive due to his use of rhetorical language, ethos, and pathos.
To have multiple ways in expressing your thoughts, it can conclude in many opposing individuals who don’t necessarily agree. In the situation with Colin Kaepernick, Kaepernick was caught in between a situation as to whether his way of expressing his freedom of speech was right or wrong in the name of being an American. In the beginning of his speech Martin Luther heralds back almost one hundred years by linking the importance of the march to the Emancipation Proclamation(King 3). By doing this King puts the issue of equality into a timeline by showing that while it has been a hundred years since African Americans had been given freedom it also shows that while freedom has been granted to them there has still been very little that has happened to give the African race a better life. These three men expressed their views on liberty in unique ways. Martin Luther King, Jr., a son of a preacher man grew up to be regarded as one of the greatest leaders and heroes in American history. Mr. King expressed his desire for all races to be free by giving heart-felt but intense speeches. He also held strikes, picket lines, and started boycotts. He emphasized for people to put an end to violence and to dispute their differences.
It is disrespectful to kneel during the national anthem because it disrespects the military and veterans, and could be done in a more professional way. I feel that kneeling shows how unappreciative those NFL players are. They get to go play the most popular sport in America for millions of dollars. Although many people contributed to this movement, Martin Luther King, Jr., is widely regarded as the leader of the movement for racial equality. Growing up in the Deep South, King saw the injustices of segregation first hand. King’s studies of Mahatma Ghandi teachings influenced his views on effective ways of protesting and achieving equality. Martin Luther King’s view on nonviolence and equality and his enormous effect on the citizens of America makes him the most influential person of the twentieth century.
The Star Spangled Banner is a sacred song in the United States of America. It not only is a symbol of the fight that soldiers have had to go through, but also a representation of freedom. When the National Anthem plays out of respect for our country, and those who fought for it, everyone is supposed to stand and remove their hats. Currently in the National Football League (NFL) there is a handful of players, mainly African Americans, that have been taking a knee or raising a fist during the play of our National Anthem. This I believe, is a great sign of disrespect for our country and our veterans. This I believe, is very immature and unnecessary. This I believe, should be put to a stop by the NFL and the players should be ashamed of himself for doing this. I am aware that the players have the right to do this, but there are many reasons why this should not be taking place.
A small number of people throughout history have had the opportunity to influence a nation of people, change their lives, and be a true symbol hope. The legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. has and will forevermore inspire how American society views equality. Dr. King was a religious leader and Civil-Rights activist in America when segregation was threatening the nation's stability. Looking back at King's life, it can be seen how he portrayed his goals for equality, enabled the country to rally against discrimination by becoming a martyr, and created a legacy for future generations of Americans to follow.
So, now that we have you all caught up, let's dig into the question at hand. Do NFL players have the right to protest the National Anthem while they are on the clock? Players are saying it is freedom of speech. While everyday Americans are saying it is a double standard and they could not do that without being fired from their jobs.
