This wasn't the first time Americans has thought about secession before. The founding of the nation's defenders of states rights had conflicts that any states would be able to cancel out any laws that were legalized by the federal government and they could even withdraw from the Union if the felt impelled to do so. A state convention repealed South Carolina's ratification of the US Constitution and voted to withdraw from the Union. It didn't want to be part of a nation in which it had no control. In the next few weeks, more states followed such as Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas. Seceding was not a unanimous choice for these Southern states. The U.S was continuing to add states and the south wanted the states to become slave states, but the North wanted the states to be free states. This is when we realized we had many problems with our country and we needed to fix them. And the end of the war came with a great outcome. The ending of this war ended slavery for the whole U.S. Meaning that all African Americans in the U.S. were free. And they no longer had to be under slavery. When President Lincoln first called for troops to put down the confederate rebellion, he made no connection between this action and an attempt to end slavery. In fact, he explicitly stated "the utmost care will be observed to avoid any devastation, any destruction of, or interference with, property..." What started as a war to prevent the South from seceding quickly turned into a war against slavery following President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. At the start of the Civil War, both Union and Confederate sides believed that they would had a quick and decisive victory. The North’s population and industry was vastly greater than the South’s, but the South had superior military leadership, a large white population that was united against invading Union armies and a hope that France or Britain would intervene on their behalf.
When Lincoln was inaugurated in 1861, he made it perfectly clear that the secession of the South was unconstitutional. He was willing to compromise with the South on the issue of slavery, the driving force behind South’s secession. Unfortunately, South was not interested in compromising. After the Fort Sumter was forced to surrender by the Confederate troops, Lincoln declared war.
