Throughout the story Gatsby was fighting to have a relationship with Daisy, Tom and Daisy's relationship was put on hold while Daisy and Gatsby fell in love. Gatsby had many problems but his major downfall was relationships. Gatsby developed many relationships, Daisy and Gatsby's relationship had the greatest impact on Gatsby.
Gatsby was always making himself seem better than what he really was. But Nick isn't quick to judge Gatsby for his mysterious behavior. Gatsby invites Nick to his party as if he knew Nick would lead him to Daisy. “ I was one of the few guests that had actually been invited (45).” This shows that Gatsby wanted something from Nick. Tom and Daisy have the same background and personality which is the main reason they act the way they do. They are made out to be well to do people but aren't very good people to get mixed up in. Gatsby is blind to what kind of person Daisy is and gets caught up in her and Tom's relationship trying to build his own with Daisy. “ Just tell him the truth- that you never loved him- and it's all wiped out forever (139).” This is where Gatsby's controlling personality starts to shine through the person everyone believes he is. Gatsby doesn't see the person Daisy truly is because he is caught in the past. “-and this woman rushed out at us as we were passing a car (151).” After the accident the Gatsby's actions are not what you would expect from a caring trusting person. Gatsby did not show any emotion for what happened because he is so caught up in Daisy. “ There was an unmistakeable air of natural intimacy about the picture and anybody would have said they were conspiring together (152-53).” This shows the true personality of both Tom and Daisy. Instead of showing sympathy and being upset about the incident, it brings Tom and Daisy together. It makes them feel closer and is the closest we've seen them in the whole story. This shows what horrible people they are and how they care only about themselves. Daisy staying with Tom and letting Gatsby take blame for her actions shows she never trulely loved
When Nick visits Daisy she tells him the story of how her daughter was born, “It’ll show you how I’ve gotten to feel about––things. Well, she was less than an hour old and Tom was God knows where. I woke up out of the ether with an utterly abandoned feeling.” By leaving Daisy behind at a time when she most needs him, Tom loses his value of companionship with Daisy. He no longer fits the three criteria that Daisy feels she needs in a man. Daisy knows that Tom no longer loves her and is having an affair with another woman, but despite all of this, Daisy has no intention of leaving him (20). This is because Tom, despite no longer fulfilling her emotionally, is still better for her financially and socially than if she left him to live alone. If Daisy wants to stay in her class, she has no option other than to stay with Tom. When Daisy finally sees Gatsby again, she suddenly has another option besides staying with Tom. Daisy knows that Gatsby has true feelings of love towards her, but leaving Tom would prove to be risky as it could tarnish her reputation and by extension her social stability. Daisy is now struggling between taking a risk for love and maintaining a safe, stable life she is ultimately unhappy
To explain the basis behind their relationship; Gatsby first met daisy at a party at her house that her parents were hosting for young army men in hopes that their daughter would find that could be a suitable husband. Soon after they became so close and fell madly in love. Daisy came from old money and gatsby had no money at all which made their relationship come to a halt when Gatsby asked to marry Daisy. With a breaking heart Daisy had to turn him down because she couldn’t marry someone that couldn’t provide what she needed...fabulous wealth. Many years past as Gatsby went to war, came back to war, and got a job helping Dan Cody on his voyages. After Gatsby7 was denied the money that Dan Cody wanted to inherit to him he got into the business of bootlegging which made him filthy rich. Everything he did over the course of the years was for Daisy so he could finally get to be with her. Sadly Gatsby later found out that Daisy had gotten married to a man named Tom Buchanan leaving Gatsby torn that Daisy did not wait for him to get rich. As the story went it on, things with Gatsby and Daisy was on off. One day Daisy will be happy with Gatsby, then the next day she’ll be sad. For example when they went out in the pool it seem like everything was lovely, but then when he took Daisy to his closet and start throwing his clothes, it was like she was very emotional to be with him. At the climax of the fight, while arguing with Jay, Tom states ”You’re crazy!’ he exploded’ I can’t speak about what happened five years ago because I didn’t know Daisy then’[...] and she loves me now’(Fitzgerald 131).Although, Tom isn’t the one who should be talking about “relationship”, he brought up a strong valid point. Tom didn’t know Daisy that much and got married months after Gatsby left for war. Daisy didn’t want to wait for him to return and knew he was still in Europe. She wasn’t interested in Gatsby anymore, but Tom. In search for agreement, Gatsby walked over to Daisy and says” ‘ Daisy, that’s all over now,’ he said earnestly ‘It doesn’t matter anymore, just tell him the truth - that you never loved him and it all wiped out forever.’[...] ‘why how could I love him- possibly?’ ‘ You never loved him’ ”(Fitzgerald 139). Daisy won’t be able to wipe all that out of her memories. Of course, she had to loved tom at some point of their marriage. They had a child and been through so much. Tom is in a relationship with Daisy however he has a mistress and both Daisy and him aren’t particularly happy whereas with the new changes in society Gatsby is not in a relationship, his feelings for Daisy do not become physical, however he is happy with his partying lifestyle and the lifestyle where they may not particularly be a need a relationship with one person due to people being around you all the time.
In the first part of the book Gatsby throws a number of large parties, hoping Daisy will come to one of them so he can pursue her. Unsuccessful, he manipulates Nick into arranging a meeting between himself and Daisy. Nick has Tom, Daisy, and Gatsby for tea. Subsequently, Gatsby invites them to go for a ride with him. Thereafter, Gatsby tries to drive a wedge between Daisy and Tom, but though she claims to love him, her love is as superficial as the image Gatsby has created with his money.
“The Great Gatsby” is one of these stories with its amazing characters and its exaggeration. This book has a major drawback. Gatsby and Nick’s relationship was too close. Gatsby was so cautious that he fired all his servants, but he allowed Nick to stay with him to peek on Daisy and Tom and to make sure Daisy was not hurt. Nick accepted his request to stay outside. This is where Nick contradicts himself again, “I disliked him so much by this time that I didn’t find it necessary to tell him he was wrong.” (Fitzgerald,136). He disliked Gatsby but he still stayed to help. But why should Gatsby, such a cautious person, allow Nick to stay beside him? And why would Nick be willing to stay even if he dislikes Gatsby so much? This part of the story is illogical, and that is why I don’t like this
Tom and Daisy have had an unhealthy relationship in their time together. Tom and Daisy over their time together have constantly been cheating on each other, even from their wedding day. F. Scott Fitzgerald portrays Tom and Daisy’s marriage as very unhealthy in The Great Gatsby. The story also presents a deep respect for understanding intellectual empathy by showing many sides of the characters stories. Tom and Daisy’s marriage has much to do with the plot and ultimately leads to Gatsby’s death. The Great Gatsby portrays the relationships in many different angles that help with intellectual empathy.
The relationship between Gatsby and Daisy is one of constant lies, and deceit. Gatsby falls in love with Daisy before he goes to the Army as a young man, and Daisy fell in love with him too. Yet Daisy is very materialistic and Tom, a very rich man came into place and Daisy married him instead of waiting for Gatsby like she had promised. Gatsby waited for Daisy but she did not wait for him, and instead married Tom just for his money. This shows how there relationship has been riddled with lies since the very beginning of the story.
Gatsby does not reach his highest potential and self-actualization in life because his relationship with Daisy falls apart.
To start off, Gatsby was convinced he was in love with Daisy, however that’s not the case. Jay Gatsby was a twisted man who was obsessed not with Daisy but with the idea of having her. Gatsby’s feelings for Daisy were not genuine; he just loved the crazy notion of having her. She played along with it and made him think that she would leave Tom, but lets face it, it was never going to happen. Daisy did not give a crap about Gatsby and everyone knows it, except for him. Daisy used Gatsby to make her husband jealous because she knew that Gatsby would do anything for her.
Tom suspects that Gatsby and Daisy are having a relationship, but has no evidence to prove it. However, whenever Tom would leave the room, Daisy would immediately run into Gatsby’s arms to show her affection. To their dismay, Tom sees this: “She had told him that she loved him, and Tom Buchanan saw” (Fitzgerald 126). This leads to a confrontation between Gatsby and Tom, where Gatsby boldly declares that “Your wife [Daisy] doesn’t love you …She’s never loved you. She loves me” (Fitzgerald 139). Gatsby feels untouchable, and his confidence in Daisy’s love for him allows him to declare this to Tom. However, Tom slowly gains control of Daisy, reminding her of the experiences they shared together. Realizing this, Gatsby becomes desperate, and attempts to force Daisy into saying things she doesn’t believe, but Daisy tells Gatsby the truth: “’Even alone I can’t say I never loved Tom… It wouldn’t be true’” (Fitzgerald 142). Gatsby is delusional because his only thought is proving to Tom that Daisy doesn’t love him, and fails to realize that he is slowly losing Daisy. He is once again so absorbed by Daisy that he fails to realize what is going on around him. Even after Daisy runs over a woman murdering her in cold blood, Gatsby is willing to take the blame for her, and states “of course I’ll say [to the police] I was [driving]” (Fitzgerard 154). Gatsby still loves Daisy after she commits murder, which is a testament to his obsession and delusion over her. Gatsby is willing to go to prison and lose everything because Gatsby still believes that Daisy loves him despite Tom proving

Daisy Buchanan, this woman is crazy, uncaring, and many would argue cold hearted. She is married to Tom and yet, has an affair with Gatsby. Tom is her husband, a very well-off man that goes off and has affairs, and never attempts to hide the fact. Then there is Gatsby. Ah, Gatsby. The young man she was so in love with as a teenage girl. Tom and Gatsby have many similarities; from the fact that both Tom and Gatsby want Daisy all to themselves to the fact that they both love her. While they share many similarities they have far more numerable differences between them. The differences range from how they treat her to how rich they and what social class they are in, to the simple fact that Tom lives in “East Egg” and Gatsby in “West Egg.” Both the similarities and differences between these two men are what ultimately cause Daisy to believe that she is in love with Tom more than she is with Gatsby.
The novel The Great Gatsby displays deceitfulness in many of its characters. The deceit brings many of the characters to their downfall. Gatsby had the greatest downfall of them all due to the fact it took his life. In The Great Gatsby , “ Gatsby goes to spectacular lengths to try to achieve what Nick calls ‘his incorruptible dream’ to recapture the past by getting Daisy Buchannan love” (Sutton). Gatsby always had an infatuation with Daisy, Jordan Baker said,”Gatsby bought that house so that Daisy would be just across the bay” (Fitzgerald 83). Gatsby and Daisy did have a past together. While Jordan was golfing, “The Officer looked at Daisy while she was speaking in a way that every young girl wants to be looked at sometime[…]His name was Jay Gatsby and I didn’t lay eyes on him for over four years-even after I’d met him in long island I didn’t realize it was the same man” (Fitzgerald 80). Daisy is now in an abusive relationship with Tom Buchannan, “Nick Carraway attends a small publicly blames Tom for the bruise on her knuckle” (Sutton). When they meet again Gatsby showers Daisy with love and affection, wanting her to leave her husband Tom, but she does not want to in their society.
