Conrad Jarret is an eighteen years old white male who live with his parent’s Beth and Calvin Jarret in an upper middle class suburban in Chicago Illinois. He is a high school junior also part of the swim team. Within the Jarret family, Beth, Conrad and Calvin all have different problems. Beth is a perfectionist who is unaccustomed with tragedy. Conrad pursuit to find himself, while trying to please the people around him, his father Calvin is cautious about his son and his feelings. Conrad 's mother refuses to forgive him for his suicide attempt, she believes he did it in order to destroy her perfectly ordered life.

Health concerns: Conrad is chronically depress, he is showing signs of sadness almost every day. He has loss the enjoyment in swimming something that he once found pleasurable. Conrad is having a feelings of hopelessness and excessive guilt almost every day. He also have problems concentration while in class. Recurring nightmares so he is afraid to go to sleep, and that leads to thoughts of death and suicide. Conrad attempted suicide once.

He has experience a level of impairment for more than two weeks. Conrad shows signs of PTSD, which includes the re-experiencing the traumatic event, of the accident and sustained a high level of anxiety, with recurrent nightmares about his brother’s death.
Intellectual functioning, Conrad is having problem staying focus in class he have fail one of his class so far. Because of debt of his loss his behavior is appropriate he displaying all the stages of grief include denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and finally acceptance. Conrad is orientation to people, time and place. His memories are intact good and bad. Conrad is working through his depression and some day will reach acceptance.

Conrad experienced a tremendous amount of psychological pain because of the loss he felt, he had no one to talk to about the death of his brother and best friend in the boating accident which resulting in a suicide attempt. Conrad's psychological problems generated from the facts that he repressed his feelings and that he looked to others for approval. He hid all his feeling and emotions and judged himself based on what others saw and thought. When Miss Melon, Conrad's English teacher, asked him, "Do you want an extension?" Conrad's immediate response was "NO"(18). He rejected her offer of assistance because he felt that help took away from his dignity and self pride. Conrad internalized what everyone else said and did and judged himself based on this. Conrad thought about himself: "All his fault. All connections with him result in failure. Loss. Evil… Everywhere he looks, there is competence and good health… He does not want to contaminate, does not wish to find further evidence of his lack of worth"(116). Through an intimate maternal bond, Michaels mother experiences the consequences of Michaels decisions, weakening her to a debilitating state of grief. “Once he belonged to me”; “He was ours,” the repetition of these inclusive statements indicates her fulfilment from protecting her son and inability to find value in life without him. Through the cyclical narrative structure, it is evident that the loss and grief felt by the mother is continual and indeterminable. Dawson reveals death can bring out weakness and anger in self and with others. The use of words with negative connotations towards the end of the story, “Lonely,” “cold,” “dead,” enforce the mother’s grief and regressing nature. Thus, people who find contentment through others, cannot find fulfilment without the presence of that individual.
As a child Conrad was born in Berdichev, Ukraine on the third day of December in 1857. although born in the Ukraine, he was of Polish ethnicity. Conrad’s full birth name was Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski which explains why he went more simply by Joseph (Witkoski 2). He was born into a wealthy noble family and was not considered a commoner on the streets. Despite the fact that his family was of noble status, the parents of his mother, Ewa Bobrowski, thought Conrad’s father, Apollo Korzeniowski, was born with tainted blood (Witkoski 2). Conrad’s father was a political writer and translator of Alfred de Vigny, Charles Dickens and Shakespeare (Zacks). Logically, because of Korzeniowski’s passion for literature it inspired Conrad to begin exploring literature himself. Conrad’s literary exploration commenced in his native language, but by his mid teens he had expanded to other languages including French and English (Zacks). At the age of four Conrad’s father was exiled to the city of Vologda for organizing an uprising. Within four months of his father’s exultation his mother died from tuberculosis. Then four years later his father passed away leaving Conrad an orphan (Zacks).
Calvin and his son have two sons their oldest Buck is extremely popular at school and their youngest Conrad who looks upon his brother. The family seems financially privileged but becomes dysfunctional when buck dies in a boating accident. Buck and Conrad were boating when Buck died and Conrad cannot stop blaming himself. He is so emotionally distraught that he attempts to kill himself. After being in the hospital for a month he is physically cured but he is still emotionally distraught and cannot stop blaming himself.

For example, there was a scene when Calvin would walk into Conrad's room just to make sure he was doing fine. Calvin not only showed his affections nonverbally, he showed them verbally also. The main literary mechanism Conrad employs in “Heart of Darkness” is the characterization of Death itself. In which Death, and how it is described and alluded to, reveals the central idea of the wrongful justification of Imperialism. Joseph Conrad’s own experiences during his trip through the Congo helped him provide a foundation for the writing of Heart of Darkness. In 1890, Conrad took a job as a captain on the river steamer Kinshasa. Before Conrad took this job, he had worked for the French merchant navy as a way to escape Russian military service and also to escape the emotional troubles that had plagued him. Conrad had been in a financial crisis that was resolved with help from his uncle. After this series of events, Conrad joined the British merchant navy at the beckoning of his uncle and took the job as the captain of a steamboat in the Congo River. An important fact to remember is that Conrad was a young and inexperienced man when he was exposed to the harsh and dangerous life of a sailor. His experiences in the West Indies and especially in the Belgium Congo were eye opening and facilitated his strong outlooks that are reflected in the book Heart of Darkness. Conrad’s journey through the Belgian Congo gave him the experiences and knowledge to write about a place that most Europeans would never see in their lives.
In Joseph Conrad’s short story, “Heart of Darkness,” the narrator, Marlow language, and point of view to convey the conflicting emotions he has about Kurtz due to the image he fabricated Kurtz to be, and the reality of Kurtz. Marlow’s language throughout the piece reveals to the reader how he feels about Kurtz and how he perceives Kurtz’s actions. Marlow’s point of view also allows him to support both of his perceptions of Kurtz because he doesn’t see only bad or only good in
This shows Conrad’s instability over the situation of his brother’s death where his brother drowned but he survived. His constant feeling that he is responsible for his brother, Karen and Robbie’s fate, and his feeling that he is responsible for replacing Buck led to him finally opening up to Dr. Berger and others about his thoughts. This leads to his growth and acceptance of Buck’s death that he receives from the help of Dr. Berger.
Throughout the film a focus on family and the dynamics is prominent. A traumatic event, the loss of a son, brother, and friend, has influenced the Jarrett greatly. Due to the circumstances in which Conrad, a severely depressed teenager and the main character, was present during the death of his brother, feelings of guilt had built up in this young man. A great deal of stress and tension is built between the family members because of this tragic accident. Here is where the concept of, change in one part of the familial system reverberates through out other parts. (Duty, 2010) The relationship between the Conrad and his mother become even more absent because, in the film it is presented to show that the mother blames and has not forgiven Conrad for the death of his brother Buck. Six months after the death of his brother Conrad attempts suicide with razors in the bathroom of his home. His parents commit him to a psychiatric hospital and eight months later, he is trying to resume his “old” life.
Dr. Berger helped Conrad and Calvin in many ways, Conrad and Calvin were going through a hard time and Dr. Berger really helped there problems. Dr. Berger was one of the main reasons why Conrad got better and without Dr. Berger helping him he maybe wouldn’t have gotten better. The first way Dr. Berger helped Conrad was by letting Conrad know he could trust him and know everything he said would stay right in that room. That opened Conrad up a lot more making it easier for Dr. Berger to understand his problems. This helped because Conrad didn’t have anyone he could trust. No one he could open up and let out all his feelings to. Conrad needed that very badly. Conrad could yell to him and let out all his feelings inside and Conrad couldn’t do that with anyone else. The next piece of evidence for how Dr. Berger helped Conrad is he lets Conrad cry for him and Dr. Berger comforts him. Like in the book after he found out Karen died, he went to Dr. Berger’s and cried to him. He didn’t cry to his dad, but cried to his therapist. In the book Conrad never had someone he could cry to, he always had to deal with everything on his own. But now that he has someone that is Dr. Berger he could cry to someone. By crying to someone he got all of his emotions out instead of just keeping them in and letting them build up to where he might kill himself again. The last reason why Dr. Berger made Conrad feel like family was by Dr. Berger supporting Conrad’s decisions and not getting mad at him at all, it showed that Conrad could trust him...
According to the book Conrad meets the criteria for having PTSD. Some of the major signs were nightmares, irritable, lying, intrusive thoughts, flashbacks due to brother’s death and acting out. He is consistently thinking negative thought and blames himself for the loss of his brother. I feel Conrad show signs of depression as well as PTSD. He has trouble sleeping, loss of appetite, suicide attempt, stressed, lack of social life with he friends, and lack of a relationship with his mother making it hard for him. I fell PTSD has more of an affect on his life though.
Heart of Darkness is a kind of little world unto itself. The reader of Conrad’s Heart of Darkness should take the time to consider this work from a psychological point of view. There are, after all, an awful lot of heads and skulls in the book, and Conrad goes out of his way to suggest that in some sense Marlow's journey is like a dream or a return to our primitive past--an exploration of the dark recesses of the human mind.
