Cancer is a deadly disease that affects millions of American families each year. In cancer, cell division isn't controlled. Usually, cells have to go through a set of checks and balances before they divide, in cancer that is nonexistent. The cells just keep duplicating until they eventually form disorganized clumps called tumors. Tumors can either be, benign, meaning that they do not possess the power to metastasize to surrounding areas. If a tumor has the power to metastasize, it is classified as a malignant tumor. In simple terms, a benign tumor is not cancerous, and a malignant tumor is. Cancer cells cannot perform the necessary functions they were created for. Some types of cancers, like pancreatic cancer, cannot be cured. Other cancers such as melanoma and breast cancer have high survival rates when caught early. The four major types of treatments used to treat cancer include, surgery to remove the affected organ, radiation, chemotherapy, or biological treatments.
Colon cancer forms in the colon, the largest part of the large intestine. Most colon cancers are adenocarcinomas (cancer that begins in cells that make and release mucosa and other fluids.) I chose colon cancer because my grandpa had colon cancer. He died in the nineteen fifties when my mom was 7. I know that cancer research has come a long way and I think that had he been alive today, he would have most likely survived. I just want to know more about colon cancer, because my mom is high risk of cancer, being that her dad died from colon cancer and my grandma is a survivor of ovarian cancer. Even though colon cancer is very deadly, when colon cancer is found early there is a high chance that an individual will survive. The rate of surviving drops from 76% to 6% between Stage 1 and Stage 4, a person who has had to go through all these stages and if they survive would have overcome so much. I've learned that smoking, drinking, and being overweight isn't just bad for you, it may even increase the risks of getting cancer. Being adopted, I have no idea of my family history, so I don’t know if I am high cancer risk or not, though, I can never be too careful. I feel much more informed on a topic that was really a mystery to me and I can feel more confident that if my mom were to contract colon cancer, she would have a high chance of surviving, provided that she gets checked by a doctor, regularly.

I have chosen to write about the constellation Cancer (The Crab). I chose Cancer because it is one of only a handful of constellations that I am actually able to identify in the night sky. Cancer is one of the twelve Zodiac constellations; people whose birthdays fall between June 21st and July 22nd have Cancer as their sign. Cancer is the Latin word for crab, and despite the fact that the constellation looks more like a lobster then a crab, it is still referred to as a crab. People that are older than 50 are usually diagnosed with colon cancer. Colon cancer can spread different part of your body and cause you a lot of pain. Doctors have found some treatments to fix colon cancer but when you are on stage three or four sometimes there is nothing that they can do. Doctors are working hard to find new treatments and maybe someday colon cancer would not be a cancer that can kill you anymore.

According to the article, “Gut Microbes Combine to cause Colon Cancer, Study Suggests” They reported that there is two type of bacteria causing colon cancer according to recent research publications. There are two type of bacteria associated with colon cancer Bacteroides fragilis and E. coli, they are known to produce a layer in the intestine lining. According to this article, E. coli have toxin that can damage DNA of the colon cells. Additionally, B. fragilis produce another toxin that damage the DNA and inflames the cells. There bacteria are not common to everyone, but some people have them in their intestine. In their study, these toxins expel from bacteria cause cancer when put into mice.
Colon and rectal cancer develop in the digestive tract, which is also called the gastrointestinal, or GI, tract. The digestive system processes food for energy and rids the body of solid waste matter (fecal matter or stool). Colon cancer and rectal cancer have many features in common. Within the bone marrow is where white blood cells are created, that help fight off bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms within the body that cause infections. The disease develops to when the white blood cells are being produced out of control. The cells that are being produced do not work properly as they should, they grow faster than a normal cell would and don’t know when to stop growing. Overtime, if not treated properly, the white blood cells will over crowd blood cells, creating a serious problem such as anemia, bleeding and infection. Leukemia cells can spread to the lymph nodes and other organs in the body causing swelling and pain.
Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) is the most common type of acute leukemia in adults. AML is a heterogeneous disease which results from genetic alterations in normal hematopoietic stem cells. These alterations induce differentiation arrest and/or excessive proliferation of abnormal leukemic cells or blasts [1]. Recent genomic studies have identified that recurrent somatic mutations in patients with AML blocks differentiation and/or enhance self-renewal by altered transcription factors [2,3]. The genetic or the epigenetic changes acquired by AML cells disrupt the key growth regulatory pathways and changes will make the normal cells to attain certain malignant characteristics which include inappropriate proliferation in the absence of normal growth signals, indefinite self-renewal in a manner analogous to a stem cell, escape from programmed cell death, inhibition of differentiation, aberrant cell cycle checkpoint control and genomic instability [4].
Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States. Every four minutes a person is diagnosed and every nine minutes someone dies. People with a first-degree relative such as a parent, sibling, or child who has colon cancer are between two to three times more the risk of developing the cancer than those without a family history. The five- year survival rate for colon cancer found at a local stage is 90%. The five- year survival rate for colon cancer at the regional stage is 70%. The five- year survival rate for colon cancer found at the distant stage is 12%. Ninety % of new cases and 95% of deaths from colon cancer are in people 50 years of age or older. CANCER is a medical term to describe an abnormal growth of cells. Abnormal cells that are able to grow and divide, but unable to die as normal cells do. COLON is a medical term for the large intestine. Together COLON CANCER is a disease used to simply state an abnormality of cell growth within the large intestine. Colon cancer has contributing risk factors, preventative factors, symptoms and various treatments/solutions according to the individual’s diagnosis.
Cancer is a disease that affects human somatic cells. It causes the cells to divide uncontrollably and form masses known as tumors. There are two different types of cancer tumors. Some tumors are benign and other tumors are malignant. Benign tumors look similar to the tissues that they came from and develop slowly. The tumor remains in the same area that the tumor originated in. Malignant tumors are formed from cells that do not resemble the tissue that they came from. They vary in shape and size. This enables pieces of the tumor to break off and spread to other places in the body. Over the past few decades cancer has become a very prominent disease. There are many different types of cancer and many different causes for the the disease. Most cancers are because of a genetic mutation. The most common type occur when a cell is dividing. Proto-oncogenes, which are alleles in a normal cells, mutate to form oncogenes. These oncogenes cause cancer because they do not allow the cells to self destruct or become epistatic. Childhood leukemia is a devastating disease that often leads to death situations.
