Schools want to violate your civil rights! Cyber bullying has been getting much attention recently and schools are being criticized for not taking action. There are three main reasons why schools should not limit students’ online speech: it violates our civil rights, it is exaggerated in size, it may result in more face-to-face bullying. One reason why schools should not limit students online speech is, it violates the first amendment right given to all Americans; freedom of speech. By limiting the speech of students it is a heavy violation of the idea given to us by our founding fathers. “The school district violated J.S’s first amendment right,” is one example in document D where a violation of civil rights occurred. A second reason why schools
should not limit students’ online speech is, cyberbullying may not be as common as you think it is.Document B was data from a survey of British school teachers; only 15.1% of the people surveyed reported being cyberbullied before. In the big scheme of things 15.1% is not a big number. Also 38.6% of teachers reported that the cyberbullying did not affect them. The case also states “A prohibition against expression of opinion, without any evidence that the rule is necessary to avoid substantial interference with school discipline or the rights of others, is not permissible under the First and Fourteenth Amendments” (Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District). Because the students didn 't necessarily disrupt the education process, their First Amendment freedom of speech should not have been violated by the school officials.

It started as people, particularly young students, and their use of technology to freely share their thoughts on social media sites. The problem is that cyberbullying is an act that must be stopped, but putting limits on students' online speech is unnecessary. If you are not familiar with the word cyberbullying, it is a is when an individual is tormented, threatened, harassed, humiliated, embarrassed or otherwise targeted by another individual using the Internet, interactive and digital technologies. But yet again I bring the point that schools should not limit the amount of students online speech. Schools must protect students’ First Amendment rights, but also maintain the learning environment and safety at school. Three main reasons why schools should not limit students online speech are there is not a large percentage affected, it does not cause a significant disruption, and it is a violation of constitutional rights.
Students’ rights in schools are limited or just taken away. Kids are forced to do whatever the officials at their school, either the principal or the teachers, tell the students to do. Unfortunately, the society perceives bullying as an unavoidable factor in schooling as well as a natural procedure of growing up. Bullying has now become an inevitable part of school life. The rapid growth of Internet technology has allowed bullying to expand and thus, created a much bigger and worse problem in the modern society. Bullying has been a problem in our society for decades. Although the problem seems almost inevitable, a solution to prevent further victims is urgently needed. Bullying and Violence in Public Schools Although bullying has always been a problem in schools, it has more recently become a bigger crisis with vicious consequences. “However it is defined, bullying is not just a child’s play, but a terrifying experience many schoolchildren face everyday. It can be as direct as teasing, hitting or threatening, or as indirect as exclusions, rumors or manipulation” (Garrett 2). Most kids do not think certain actions are classified as bullying, yet they do not realize the severity of the way they treat their peers.
While students have First Amendment rights, there are still some things that the school is allowed to control. Censorship in school is important because it can minimize distractions and other behavioral problems. It also gives parents peace of mind and students the feeling of security. It is also important for a student to be able to express themselves. People express themselves in different ways, and they have the constitutional right to do so whether they’re on school grounds or not. Censorship is a very controversial issue and should not be taken lightly. There are many things to consider when censoring, and it’s important to have balance between censorship and freedom in schools.
In the mid 1940’s bullying still occurred it just was not involved in media as it is now. Today we have bullying all over the internet through phones and other devices of technology, back then technology did not exist bullying was done either in person or behind that persons back. People tend to think just because it was not known of back then that it did not happen. This is not the case, now it just happens more often. The reason it is heard about more is because of the stress level kids reach they commit suicide. Bullying in the world today is a lot more severe than it used to be; it affects children emotionally, and physically; this is compared to how bullying was showed in Lord of The Flies.
A teenager wakes up; they dress in a fashion comfortable to them. Perhaps the style isn’t the style that is currently “in”, but nonetheless, it is what this teenager feels good about wearing. They never expect that they will spend the entire day at school being made fun of for it. Somewhere else, in a different state, a different school district, a female doesn’t believe she is beautiful. She wakes up every day, looks in the mirror and wonders why life is cruel. She heads to school where her belief is validated by the senseless and relentless taunts of her classmates. She decides later that night that life is no longer worth living. These are scenarios that seem too horrific to be true, but they are all too real. Bullying is a problem, especially amongst school children, and there must be more awareness and more done to hinder the disease.
In the school environment, the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community is an example of one particularly targeted group which is consistently besieged by attacks from homophobic students, faculty and staff. There have been charities and other organizations founded to specifically help minority groups, who are regularly targeted. In 2004-2005, a prominent English activist and charity group in the U. K. called Stonewall, set up partnerships to discuss homophobic bullying in schools with Friends and Families of Lesbians and Gays (FFLAG) and Lesbian & Gay Youth Scotland and then launched a campaign to tackle that same homophobia and homophobic bullying in schools, called Education for All. Since then, Stonewall has done surveys, held conferences, and lobbied legislators, as well as worked with teachers to gather the research from the surveys on homophobic bullying in schools.
