Brakes may be one of the most essential inventions in the developments of automobiles. Clearly, nothing can surpass the breakthrough of the wheel, but the brake system was a catalyst to the further developments of cars. The brake system has also evolved greatly throughout the years. Once considered one of the simplest parts of a vehicle, brakes have become one of the most complicated components in a vehicle. The scientific explanation behind a brake system is very rudimentary. Friction permits the concept of braking to occur.
The first brake system was used thousands of years ago. The Romans had a system that involved a wooden block and a lever to slow and stop the cart. The driver would push or pull the lever which causes a wooden block to be pressed against the outer part of the wheel. These were used until the 20th century. Later the drum and disc brakes were invented to accommodate the faster motorized automobiles. The drum brake is placed in the inner surface of the wheel. When the brake is applied, the brake shoes will move outward and create friction against the drum. In the disc brake, there are more components to it. There is a rotor that is attached to the wheel and a caliper. The rotor is a disc which rotates with the wheel. The caliper squeezes on the rotor when the brakes are pressed instead of rubbing directly against the wheel. Disc brakes are sometimes preferred to drum brakes because of its superior cooling system. When the brake pads rub against the rotor or drum, heat is also produced. It is harder for the drum brakes to cool down because it is located inside the wheel and not exposed to as much outside air. Some disc brakes will have slits on the sides of the disc to provide cooling. Faster cooling will pre...

...ads. The theory behind this is that a non-rotating tire has less traction than a spinning one. The ABS will allow the vehicle to stop faster than when the wheel is skidding and allow the driver to remain in control of the vehicle while it stops. With the technology today, there are sensors attached to the wheels to sense when one wheel is spinning at a different speed than another.
The brake system is something that the driver should always check to be working properly. Once the driver feels that the brakes are not working optimally, he or she should bring it to a maintenance shop to replace the brake pads, rotor, disc, or drum. The tire also is a factor to how quickly a car will stop. Keeping key components in your car in check at all times will help make anyone a better driver. Having a well working brake system will make the roads safer for everyone in the HTS.
