The main reason for the severance of the colonies from Britain was the lack of equality in parliament and the disregard for colonial needs. Whether it be forcing someone to pay for a war they did not fight or want, limiting one’s need for land, or piling on the taxes, all of these factors played a part in the dissolving of British-colonial ties. The colonists were only human and had the human reaction of defiance to injustice. If the colonists had not of had the audacity that they did, today’s America would be a very different place. Breaking away from Britain was the greatest thing the colonists could have possible done.
Many people believe that the Boston Tea Party arose just because of the Tea Act that came into play in 1773, but in-fact, this major statement arose from two issues surrounding the British Empire in 1765. The first of the issues was that the British East India Company was at risk of going under and the Parliament was finding ways to bring it back. The second issue was that there was a continuing dispute about the extent of the Parliament’s authority. Many colonists believe that the Parliament went overboard with their power and the people were concerned about the future. Attempting to resolve these two major issues, the North Ministry only worsened the problem and produced a showdown that would eventually result in revolution.
Many people know about the Revolutionary war and how the colonists seized their independence from the British. What most do not understand is that there was a series of events that steared the colonists onto the road to independence. They began to think for themselves and started to challenge authority. Coming to the New World, the colonists reached for power and financial opportunity when challenging authority in these three examples: the Witchcraft Trials, Bacon’s Rebellion, and the Boston Tea Party.
In order to obtain some of the colonists’ finances, Britain began to pass a series of taxes. The Stamp Act was passed in 1765, and placed a tax on any paper goods that were going into the colonies from Britain. This included newspapers, pamphlets, and playing cards, just to name a few (Stamp Act).The colonists had been so accustomed to their freedom from the crown at this point, that they were enraged. The relationship between the Mother country and the colonies did not get much better with the instatement of the Townshend Acts of 1767. These acts passed taxes on every day goods that the colonists needed, such as lead, tea, glass and paint (Townshend Acts).
When the Boston Tea Party occurred on the evening of December 16,1773, it was the culmination of many years of bad feeling between the British government and her American colonies. The controversy between the two always seemed to hinge on the taxes, which Great Britain required for the upkeep of the American colonies. Starting in 1765, the Stamp Act was intended by Parliament to provide the funds necessary to keep peace between the American settlers and the Native American population. In the 1760s King George III enacted the Sugar Act and the Stamp act to gain extra revenue from his colonies. King George III decided to enact heavier taxes to put money back into the empire that had been lost after the French and Indian War. This act levied heavy taxes on sugar imported from the West Indies. The Stamp Act in 1765 required that many items have a stamp to prove that the owner had payed for the taxes on the item. The problem the colonists had with it was that it increased the presence of English troops in the Colonies and they felt it was unneeded and only meant to put more control into Great Britain's hands.

English leaders, were not satisfied with the financial and military help they had received from the colonists during the war. The number one priority of it dealt with taxes, which Britain was requiring American colonies to pay. With that being said, parliament passed the Tea Act, which had a big part in the Boston Tea Party. The Tea Act allowed East Indian Company to undersell colonial tea merchants in American Market. It was the start of something new.
The loss of the colonies resulted from many different situations. First of all, there was a lack of consistency in British colonial policy. The Stamp Act, in 1765, was passed by Grenville but was then repealed by Lord Rockingham just a year later in 1766. The Townshend Acts were imposed in 1767 and then repealed except for the tax on tea shortly after. As a result of this commotion, the people looked for someone to blame, and King George III was blamed for this instability (Watson, 2017). According to Edmund Burke, a Whig statesman, George could not keep a ministry because “he was faithless and intrigued with friends ‘behind the curtain’” (Watson, 2017, George III). In 1770, the king was able to find a minister, Lord North who had the power to appease the people and government. This led to 12 years of a stable government, which was a welcome relief after a decade of disarray (Watson, 2017). However, things were too far gone with the American colonies for them to be saved and on July 4th, 1776 Americans declared their independence. The loss of the American colonies put the Hanoverian throne in danger, but “George’s strong defense of what he saw as the national interest and the prospect of long war with revolutionary France made him, if anything, more popular than before” (George III (r. 1760-1820), 2016, pg.
