Mentor: The Kid & The CEO by Tom Pace (with Walter Jenkins) When I first read the requirements for this book review assignment, I wasn’t currently reading a book. I knew I wanted to do it on a Nicholas Sparks books as those are easy reads for myself and I knew a lot of them had to do with family issues. I went to check out a few options at the library when I stumbled across this book, “The Mentor”. I started reading and I was instantly hooked! • Characters: a. Malcom – CEO and the Mentor throughout the book. i. This character is based off of Tom (the author’s) life. ii. Malcom started out with a troubled passed. Tony – 19 year old kid who has a troubled passed. After stealing beer with his brother Jeff, Tony is sent to jail for 90 days. After the 90 days are up the judge is going to decide if he will be sent to prison or not (because this was his second conviction and was currently on probation). i. Tony does not attend the first meeting but notices how happy his cellmates come back every Monday, so he decides to go the next Monday. ii. Malcom comes up to Tony after the meeting and gives him a book to read called “The Greatest Miracle in the World”. Tony isn’t a fan of reading but he ends up reading the book and then every Monday continues to meet with Malcom and they talk about the book or the other books or thoughts Malcom asks Tony to read or think about. c. Gary – is a guy that Malcom introduces to Tony on his first day out of jail. Malcom gave him a shovel to start his digging business, but now Gary owns his own equipment and employs 6 workers. iii. After Tony is released, Malcom suggest that Tony lives with him until Tony is able to find a stable home. A few days after getting out, Gary also offers Tony a job. • Setting: Oklahoma City, OK – The county jail; the trail around the lighthouse and Gary’s house. • Plot: Tony is a young adult who has no direction or hope for this future. That is until he meets Malcom, a businessman who has faced similar challenges. Malcom comes to the county jail on Monday’s and soon builds a connection with Tony. Malcom shares his knowledge and experience with Tony and he soon becomes successful himself. This book shows what a role of a mentor has on someone’s life.
