BIPOLAR DISORDER IN CHILDREN AND TEENS
Bipolar disorder: is a mental illness typically classified as a mood disorder. It is characterized by episodes of an elevated or agitated mood known as mania, usually alternating with episodes of depression. Bipolar indicates that the person exhibits two types of behavior one in which he showcase an abnormal behavior and the other in which they are depress. Teens and especially children found with bipolar depression are usually classified as early-onset bipolar disorder and should be treated although this illness last for a life time.
Key diagnostic criteria since the bipolar shows two different types of mood which is depression and mania it necessary to understand both symptoms separately.
A. Depression episode.
.The child often gets aggressive and argumentative, and also gets irritated easily.
. Children with bipolar also lack motivation to do their task i.e. it makes it difficult for them to do well in school.
. They also often have difficulty in getting enough sleep.
. They also complain a lot about pains such as stomachaches and headaches.

B. Manic episode.
. Children tend to speak more than normal. However, their conversation is one-sided and they are not interested in how others respond to their speech.

The major goals of this treatment are to Treat and reduce the severity of acute episodes of mania or depression when they occur, Reduce the frequency of episodes, Avoid cycling from one phase to another and Help the patient function as well as possible between episodes. Some drugs can be taken example are, lithium, Anti-seizure Drugs like carbamazepine, Antidepressants like SSRI.

Bipolar does not have a specific cause it is a complex disorder with multiple contributing factors one is genetic. Sometimes bipolar tends to run in peoples families. Another factor is biological.
According to Butcher, Hooley and Mineka, bipolar I disorder is major depression coupled with mania. Bipolar I disorder is distinguished from bipolar II disorder because manic episodes and major depression last for an extended amount of time; at least one week (Butcher, Hooley, & Mineka, 2014, p. 239). Symptoms of patients who are diagnosed with bipolar disorder include depression, anxiety, guilt and suicidal thoughts and energetic periods which include irritability, short temperedness, and erratic judgment (Butcher, Hooley, & Mineka, 2014, p. 240).
Bipolar Disorder (Formerly known as Manic Depression) is a mental illness linked to alterations in moods such as mood swings, mania, and depression. There is more than one type, Bipolar I and Bipolar II, and the subcategories are divided by the severity of the symptoms seen, such as cyclothymic disorder, seasonal mood changes, rapid cycling disorder and psychosis. Age of onset usually occurs between 15-30 years old with an average onset of 25 years old but it can affect all ages. Eric Beck meets criteria for Bipolar 1 disorder. He shows some signs of General Anxiety Disorder as well. Anxiety disorders are the most coming co-occurring disorder with Bipolar 1. To be diagnosed with Bipolar 1 disorder you must meet criteria for Major Depressive Episode and Manic Episode. It is a mood disorder caused by chemical imbalances in the brain that can result in extreme mood swings, from manic highs to depressive lows.
