1. Introduction: What is meant by biomimicry? Biomimicry is the intention of imitating and copying resources, structures and organisms of nature and then to have it used in a biological manner for human purposes. A sustainability problem in technology and industry In everyday life, there are things that one needs to survive. And sustainability problems arise every day. One such problem is energy loss. The world is using up a lot of energy and new ideas need to be formed to help the rest of the world and the future of the generations that are to follow, to survive. With that the problem is that people use up energy and they do not use it efficiently. Therefore scientists are needed to find ways to deal with the sustainability problem that is arising. That is where wind turbines are used to generate this energy but the actual wind-turbines are very large, loud and they kill birds, thus new designs need to be found in order to help energy usage and to bring the size and structure of the wind turbines to a smaller scale to prevent injuries to nature and the species around it. Nature's role in solving the sustainability problem Nature itself, contributes in varying ways to solve the sustainability problem. The weather and wind itself contributes to making wind turbines work. By having scientists find a way to solve the sustainability problem, the actual problem is fixed by nature and tested in nature in order to solve the problem. Therefore one can say nature’s role in solving the sustainability problem, is by simply being around to enable scientists working area to try the experiment out and to solve the sustainability problem. Biopower is a normative force employed on populations. Its main concern is the controlling of abnormalities and accounting or eliminating of random cases in order to maintain a normal population. The term biopower is highly associated with the French philosopher Michael Foucault. Foucault believed the government introduced a technology known as biopower to manage populations in the 18th century. The foundations of biopower lie in disciplinary power. Where disciplinary power trains the action of bodies, biopower manages the births, deaths, reproduction and illnesses of a population. An example of biopower today would be China’s one child policy. I will refer back to this example in my essay but briefly this is the policy that offers financial, educational and many other incentives to families who only have one child. Resistance co-exists with power because where there is power there is a possibility of resistance. The mission of resistance is to avoid keeping things as they stand. Methods are put in place to retain a more acceptable state of affairs. But couldn't resistance, therefore, when taken to the extreme, be seen as a type of biopower? We can’t use a biopower to eliminate a biopower. For Foucault, biopower should be resisted because he deemed it responsible for the rise of capitalism. Biopower governs over human life leaving it in the hands of politics. This was for Foucault unacceptable and ‘Society Must be Defended.’ However, we are going through vital developments in our politics and an analytical approach such as biopower, if revolutionised properly and used correctly would provide a sufficient and useful tool. Bioindicator’s are different types of living organisms that responds to different types of effect in the human environment. Lichens are a special type of Bioindicator that are used for air pollution. One main type of pollution is the sulfur-oxide pollution, which they get their personal needs from the atmosphere rather than from the soil in the ground. The lichens also react to the air pollution all- year round rather than a few months at a time. Lichens are also inexpensive to use for evaluating the air pollution. Lichens can also be used for some other things that different organisms can’t be used for. Lichens are closely associated with two very different organisms’ called alga and fungus. They all live in a symbiotic association. Lichens have special abilities that help them survive during extreme temperatures and extreme sources of moisture. Lichens have 3 different types of growth form: crusty which the edges are flat and hard to remove, leafy which the top and the bottom layers are different, then lastly you have the shrubby kind which is kind of similar to the Spanish moss when it’s hanging downwards. Then this mechanical power gets generated into electricity. Wind turbines make energy by the wind turning the large blades, which spin a shaft that is connected to the large blades, which then operates the generator making electricity.

There are obstacles and challenges that will make it more difficult, but the environmental impact is well worth it to invest more money into wind energy.
