Animals such as dogs, cats, and so on are often viewed as part of the family to many pet owners worldwide. There are many reasons for why humans view companion animals, such as dogs or cats, as part of the family. For instance, some view companion animals as a surrogate for a human. The dog may help a human who lives alone and wants a companion at home. Others feel it gives the human an opportunity to be in an elite group like a breed specific group if the owner has a pure breed dog. Furthermore, humans may have a dog breed that is socially constructed to be aggressive, so it can be a guard dog. Pets can lead to social acceptance, more friends, and so on. Besides, there is a multitude of reasons why one has a companion animal. With all those reasons, it is not studied to the extent that it should be.

Some 60 percent of United States households contains pets (Sanders, 1990), with that number being over half it reveals how much animals impact everyday life. The companion animals are often part of many people’s identity. According to Sanders, a sociologist, says, “companion animals… represent the social identity of the owner.” The animal shapes their identity in many ways. Many people talk to their dog the same way they would talk to another human. It seems unimagined to go home and not see the dogs or cats in the house. The animals are often taken care of like a baby by being bathed, fed, taken outside, et cetera. Most feel their animal does not judge them for the things they take part in, something that people long for: unconditional
First Friend: A History of Dogs and Humans, by Katherine Rogers, articulates the history of the relationship between dogs and humans. Wild Justice: The Moral Lives of Animals, by Marc Bekoff and Jessica Pierce, investigates if and how dogs exhibit morality. In both texts, anecdotes and observations are used to portray instances of dogs displaying cooperation, empathy, altruism, and, by extension, morality. Consequently, it stands to reason that dogs have a capacity for sociality, but how can the sociality of dogs be described? A dog’s capacity for sociality is the ability to form long term relationships with members of the same or other species. Dogs, in particular, dogs who hunt as well as dogs who play, are able to form long term relationships with humans and other dogs through trust, love,
In 2017, an innocent passenger named Marlin Jackson was mauled by a lab mix on a Delta flight. The dog was sitting in the lap of the man next to Jackson. Trapped by the window, Jackson was attacked in the face two times by the dog, resulting in facial wounds that required twenty-eight stitches. In the last few years, the popularity of emotional support animals continues to grow.
It can be a companion, an aide, or both. Pet dogs are loyal and make wonderful company, and an emotional support dog creates bountiful joy, but a service dog is much more. A service dog not only serves the same role as a pet, but creates a safer environment for its owner. Without the service dog it would be much harder for the owner to get around on a daily basis indecently. However service dogs and their owners are discriminated against because people are skeptical of the dog’s legitimacy, but instead the service dogs and their owners should be respected and treated as
Have you ever wondered how much it costs to have and maintain a pet? Burkhard Bilger, the author of “The Last Meow”, explains how Americans spend a lot of money on their pets and that people's “love affair” with their pets has gotten out of control. An observation I have made is that in many movies dogs are treated very well. When I was younger, I watched a movie called Bratz and one character would always have her dog inside a dog purse and they would even get manicures and pedicures together. The dog always had shiny clothes on and it was always very clean. Therefore, I agree with Bilger's argument that Americans “love affair” with their pets has gotten out of control.
Imagine wanting not a puppy, but a tiger for your birthday, imagine the expenses of that tiger and the dangers and hazards of owning that tiger. Do you really think it’s a good idea to get that tiger? No, it’s not. It’s a lot of work, and it’s also very dangerous. Exotic animals are not good to buy and have. If you buy that cute tiger, it will eventually grow up and not be so cute, it will be dangerous and strong, it’s also a wild animal and it’s very unpredictable, also there are many diseases you can catch from that tiger, and there are many dangers of having that tiger as well. You wake up in the hospital, look around, and find a doctor hovering nearby declaring that you have just suffered through a heart attack; affirming that if not for your dog, you would have died. You remember back to earlier that day: sitting on the couch, feeling a little off, hearing your dog barking, sensing him nudging you, going to the phone to call the ambulance, and having your dog by your side until you were safe inside the aluminum walls of the emergency vehicle. Although it sounds abnormal that a dog would be the one to save someone’s life, situations similar to the one above are not uncommon. Dogs and other household pets have been shown to be able to detect medical emergencies, including heart attacks and seizures, in their owners.
Your parents have probably told you from a young age that if you don’t want to do something, then doesn’t do it. How would you feel if someone was coming at you with chains and whips forcing you to perform in front of an audience, after you made it clear that you didn’t want to perform? This is exactly what animals across have to endure on a daily schedule. The first zoo in the US opened on July 1st, 1875 in Philadelphia, 140 years later the treatment in animals in zoos has not changed dramatically.
When most people think of companion animals, they have a specific species and bred in mind. Take dogs for example, any dog lover will admit to having a special place in their heart for a certain breed. Most breeders are counting on this. This mindset, however, does more harm than good to the companion animal population. That being said, here are some reasons you should start looking through shelters and rescue organizations to adopt your next family member!
In 2011, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) euthanized the majority of dogs and cats that had been taken into its shelter. Of the 760 dogs taken into the shelter, 713 of them were killed, 19 were adopted and 36 were transferred to other shelters. Of the 1,211 cats taken into the shelter, 1,198 were euthanized, five were adopted, and eight were transferred to other shelters. Of the 58 other animals, such as rabbits, the PETA shelter had taken in, 54 of them were killed. Yet, this is not an isolated incident.
“No honey it is a big responsibility. Maybe in a little while.” but this essay is going to show why a little while might not just be so far away because even though dogs do inflict challenges, there are many positive arguments why dogs should be apart of every household. One reason why dogs are beneficial to people is that they improve people’s mood in a positive way. Science (and people!) have proven that dogs raise our mood!
“A dog is a man’s best friend” goes much deeper than the phrase might initially imply. Recently many medical journals have begun to identify with the many and varied benefits of pet ownership. Men have always relied upon animals for work, transportation, and survival. As times have changed, man has begun to appreciate a different bond with animals. Gone are the days of animals running free outside around the homestead, for now animals are allowed inside and are considered by many to be an integral part of our daily lives! Medical studies have found that animals have a much greater intelligence level than originally thought. Through proper training and experience, animals are not only household pets, but also are becoming an accepted form of medical treatment.
There are many reasons to get a pet. You could choose to get a pet for a companion, or simply to add to your family. Many older folk choose to get a pet after they retire or lose their spouse so they do not feel lonely. Many young couples choose to get a pet before they opt to have children, and many families add a pet to their home for their children. The question is though, what type of pet to get? Do you get a cat, or a dog? Having a dog as a pet over a cat is much more enjoyable and beneficial to your life, specifically because of their behavior, convenience, and loyalty.
Over 71 million American households (62%) have a pet, and most people think of their pets as members of the family. Some research studies have found that people who have a pet have healthier hearts, stay home sick less often, make fewer visits to the doctor, get more exercise, and are less depressed. Pets may also have a significant impact on allergies, asthma, social support, and social interactions with other people (Casciotti) .
In conclusion, I truly care for all animals. My dogs are my true friends. I do not know where my life will take me in the future, but I hope to have a dog. Bella and Buddy will help me live a long and healthy life. Dogs help me become the person I am today. I now realize what it means to take care of a living animal. When my friends at school see me, they always remind me of dogs. I have a true friend forever; the lifestyle of my dogs makes me want to sleep in bizarre places, comfort other people, and live a responsible
If one already has too many responsibility’s, he or she will not have enough time to take care of another life. Animals can be great to teach kids responsibilities at a young or to teach a couple before he or she decides on having a baby. With the increase of technology, people have less and less responsibilities to take on. Pets can teach one if he or she would be good at taking care of animals. Consistency is key to taking care of a pet and consistency is what responsibility is about. Consistency is important to learn so one may continue to be responsible for others. It is also helpful in everyday life whether one wants to learn an instrument, or one would like to have a family to take care of. Pets are a stepping stone to a more consistent and responsibly human
