The Democratic Flaw: The Electoral College may be Taking Away Your Voting Rights

Who do you think decides the next President of the United States? Most people would probably say the their votes. The correct answer is the Electoral College. People deserve to have their votes matter, so the Electoral College should be abolished to allow the American people the full ability to be able to pick their leader under Democracy. The Electoral College was created by our founding fathers as a part of “The Great Compromise”. There were two parts to this. First, there would have to be two separate houses of congress, One based off of the population, and the other “upper “ house would have equal representation.The second part of “The Great Compromise
No. The United States is not a democracy. It is a Representative Democratic Republic. Democracy is “ a system of government that is run by the majority of the population,.”.(11) Representative Democracy is “ a form of government where officials representing a certain group of people are elected ”.(11) The founding fathers actually created a republic with the Constitution. It had three branches. Each with different government jobs. The Executive Branch was elected by the Electoral College. Federal judges were selected by the president. The Senate were chosen by the state governments. The only part of the government that was elected by the people was the House of Representatives. Nowadays the Senate is elected by the population, and the Electoral College still remains. Originally the people had no ability to have their input on anything that happened in government, but to this day the Electoral College is still the deciding body on who will be elected the President of the United

Kennedy was just a Senator in 1956, he “attempted to undermine federalism by abolishing the Electoral College.”(5) He pretty much stated that” he wanted to abolish the Electoral College”, but it is not as easy as you might think. There are two ways you can abolish the Electoral College. First, you pretty much have to rewrite the constitution. Which would require a new constitutional convention, The other way would require getting rid of the senate, and requiring the Electoral College to replace it. Many people have tried to amend the Electoral College but all have failed, but is the Electoral College so bad? It prevents “split states” and it helps prevent candidates from creating independent parties by forcing them to win the entire state to get the Electoral Vote. Without this there would be all kinds of confusion with “split states” and candidates running for their own independent parties.
