Sitting on the bathroom floor, my mother, sixteen year old Andrea Butler, was curled up in a ball crying more than ever before. Several minutes passed before she stood up and looked into the mirror. She tried to compose herself by brushing through her dark brown hair, but as she looked back down at the small, plastic stick with two pink lines on it, her chocolate colored eyes immediately fill with tears once again. “What am I supposed to do?” My mother thought over and over in her head. She was among the top of her class. She had a plan. She wanted to graduate school and to attend college. My school found out about the handful of girls news through various options, most of the time it was heard through “the great vine” of gossip or sometimes the girls made an announcement on Facebook to clear the air for everyone. Just like my teenage mother, people judged and gossiped about these girls without truly knowing who they were. When I heard about the pregnancies of some of my fellow classmates I never judged them. At such a hard time in their life, they needed more people to understand. They needed more people to give them sympathy and to let them know that everything would be alright. Nowadays, two or three years later, I find myself looking there those same girl’s pictures. I believe it is a way of checking in on them to see how they are doing. I like to view the baby pictures and see how they are making it through the journey of motherhood. For myself, my mother’s mistake always taught me that unprotected sex was a very reckless decision. As I entered high school, my mother gave me many speeches on the topic.
