“All I’m asking is for a little respect when you get home. R-e-s-p-e-c-t, find out what it means to me. R-e-s-p-e-c-t, take care TCB.” The notorious, veracious lyrics of Aretha Franklin’s song “Respect” probably ring in everyone’s ears as soon as they hear the word respect. Through the power of music, Aretha Franklin recognized the importance of instilling necessary words into everyone’s head. Hopefully everyone understood the lyrics well enough so the words pop into their head at the most essential times. It’s important for everyone to be respectful to everyone, including being respectful to oneself. That means holding aplomb, being truthful, and holding a healthy sense of self-worth. In addition, respect teaches a person to stay out of trouble because they value others thoughts and considerations as highly as their own. Respect controls a person’s temper. Respect builds up a society to become a better place. It relates to a person’s values and actions. The five reasons stated are just a few of the several reasons why everyone should exhibit respect. According to dictionary.com, respect’s denotation is an “esteem for or a sense of the worth or excellence of a person, a personal quality or ability, or something considered as a manifestation of a personal quality or ability.” The origin of the word comes from the Latin word respectus, meaning “regard” or an “act of looking back at one.” Therefore, respect translates into valuing, honoring, admiring, and looking up to someone or something by taking care of and sharing kindness with one other. Respect is more than just admiring someone though: It involves trusting someone to choose ethical decisions. For example, why should someone respect a police officer? Motivation from peers, educational leaders, or other members of society may help those that should learn to behave ethically, but the bottom line is following one’s inner code of ethics, which constitutes character. Proper respect for others begins by a person respecting their self. Respect is developed by expressing honor, leadership, value, and trust in a person. If everyone respects everyone someday, the world will become a seventh heaven. It is important to be respectful for safety, to abide by the law, because children are influenced by their elders’ actions, and because God says so. Motivation from peers can help a person realize there is always room to improve the level of respect a person exhibits. Respect was, is, and always will be a positive attribute for everyone to strive for in their lives.
Respect is a such a simple concept and a virtue that should be simple to follow. It means treating other people and animals in a dignified manner. Respect doesn’t mean that people need to hug everyone they come across or hold their opinion higher than everyone elses. Respect means treating others as equals and acknowledging that as human
Virtue ethics is an approach that “deemphasizes rules, consequences and particular acts and places the focus on the kind of person who is acting” (Garrett, 2005). A person’s character is the totality of his character traits. Our character traits can be goo...
Between my parents and my upbringing in the church, I grew up being taught that respect for others was of the utmost importance, especially respect for those in a higher position than me. Additionally, my job as a taekwondo instructor highly emphasizes the essentiality for respecting others. Therefore, it comes as a shock to me that my score was so low, and I fell in such a low percentile. The results of this assessment motivate me to be more aware of others. Now, and once I get out in the business world, I hope to show all my peers and elders respect. Life is too fragile to show disrespect and sacrifice another's self-esteem, and unfortunately in some cases, another's
Respect to me is admiring someone for their abilities, qualities, or achievements. I think respect is always earned an can never be given. As soldiers soldiers we should always respect our peers because they have made the same sacrifice as us. But as soldiers we should have a higher level of respect for our NCOs because they have done their time an have earned it. Being respectful is not hard it is simple, just treat others the way we would like to be treated ourselves.
Ethical behavior is behavior that a person considers appropriate. A person’s moral principles are shaped from birth, and developed over time throughout the person’s life. There are many factors that can influence what a person believes is right, or what is wrong. Some factors are a person’s family, religious beliefs, culture, and experiences. In business, it is of great importance for an employee to understand how to act ethically to prevent a company from being sued, and receiving criticism from the public while bringing in profits for the company.
Throughout my life, I have met countless role models (supervisors, co-workers, teachers, coaches, my parents) who push me harder and harder every single day so that I will succeed beyond belief in the changing world of today. Respect is also holding you up to an expectation that gets tougher and tougher because I am pushing myself harder. I will always have respect for all today, tomorrow, and the future
Respect is a ‘benevolent, altruistic, or sympathetic expression of regard for other individuals’ (Downie & Telfer, 1969). Respect is behaving in a certain manner in order to show that you care about the individual’s feelings and their well-being. Respect can be shown through empathy and compassion towards an individual. It can also be shown by accepting and considering another individuals differences for example their race, gender, age, sexuality, religion and culture. Respect is a value to me because I believe looking at an individual as a whole and valuing them as an individual along with including their emotional, social, physical well-being and psychological is important. For example previously I have visited a service user’s home who was Asian. Having an Asian cultural belief within myself, my upbringing taught me about how you should behave when in another individual’s house. Such as not wearing outdoor shoes inside, behaving in a positive manner and not being rude. Upon arriving at the service user’s home, I immediately removed my shoes as it is what I have been taught when growing up. Having a shared cultural value base allowed there to be mutual respect between me and the service user. I believe it is important to create a respectful relationship between myself and the service user. If there is no respect between the individual and the service user, then this will lead the service user
The term “ethics” refers to an external set of rules that have been established by an institution or organization, for example, a university, and the members are expected to follow them. On the other hand, integrity refers to an individuals’ internal set of principles that guides their actions and behavior (Czimbal and Brooks n.p.). As a rule, people are usually rewarded when they follow ethical codes of conduct by an external committee or board that monitors their behavior. For a person of high integrity, the benefits are usually intrinsic. Moreover, such individuals always make the right decisions even when they are not being watched. Therefore, this feature of character is often influenced by a person’s upbringing. In
“It's important to understand that while honor is an entitlement to respect--and shame comes when you lose that title--a person of honor cares first of all not about being respected but about being worthy of respect.” (Appiah, 2015) This quote basically states that honor is very important. Within the school if you have honor you have respect, and other people will respect you. Respect goes a long way and having it can get you very far in life. It could be the reason you got accepted to college somewhere or nail the job you want. Although in order for others to respect you, you have to respect them. Respect is good to have in school.

As a child I was brought up to know to treat everyone with the respect that I wanted them to treat me with. I feel that this value has been lost in recent generations because anytime I see children in public, they don’t seem to be very respectful to adults. I believe that the culture we live in has been affected by high rates of technology and low rates of sociability. I think that this has influenced the lack of respect that is present in our culture. Children spend hours playing on their devices rather than playing with other kids. The lack of socialization has made these children incapable of knowing what is right and wrong in social situations. Respectfulness has shaped my life by giving me the tools to socialize with respect, which has given me the ability to be favored among adults, secure employment, and to gain the respect of peers.

Having respect can bring many positive aspects such as happiness, being happy can bring happiness to others around you that is an essential to solving problems that reduces conflict with one another. Having a value that is such a priority in life does not mean that you have to go against what you believe in order to satisfy others. School, in essence, functions as a ladder to the future. The farther up the ladder a person goes, the more prepared for real life he will find himself. Respect is one of the keys to getting up the ladder and succeeding in many aspects of life. I grew up respecting my elders: whether it was my grandparents or the librarian, I have always had respect. The regard I have developed for teachers has come from knowing that I will need their help to make it through school and I can only get it by being respectful and polite.
