Yes, Andrew Jackson was a good president. Andrew Jackson is a symbol of the American dream. Andrew Jackson was born into poverty, but came out on top when he became a wealthy lawyer in Tennessee (Andrew Jackson). Andrew Jackson served in the War of 1812 as a major general (Andrew Jackson). He was seen as a war hero and was given the nickname “Old Hickory” by his admirers. Jackson “became a symbol of steadfastness and bravery” (Page 355 of our assigned readings). Jackson’s life in the military carried over into when he became a Politian, and eventually when he became the seventh president of the United States. Other Indian tribes were beginning to help the British, so what would stop the Cherokee. Overall, Jackson’s goal “was to preserve the security and well-being of the United States,” and he accomplished that (Page 504 of our assigned readings). Jackson wanted to stop confrontation between the white population and the Indian population. Jackson thought that by removing them he would accomplish this. Jackson stated, “By opening the whole territory between Tennessee on the north and Louisiana on the south to the settlement of the whites it will incalculably strengthen the southwestern frontier and render the adjacent States strong enough to repel future invasions without remote aid.” (Page 516 of our assigned readings). Overall, Andrew Jackson was a good president. Yes, he made mistakes, but who doesn’t. This country is still growing, day by day. We need to give President Jackson, and the future presidents to come, credit for what they have accomplished. By discussing the Indian Removal, it proves that Jackson just wanted what was best for the United States of America.
