Introduction: • Smile, Smile, Smile is a poem written by Wilfred Owen where he contrasts the attitude of society towards war compared to the war itself. The society was lead to believe that the their futures would only be bright if the young soldiers sacrificed their lives for their "nations". • Wilfred Owen was an officer in World War I, who was sent to a hospital because he suffered from "shellshock". There, he met poet Siegfried Sassoon, who played a part in influencing him to write poetry about war and the suffering of soldiers. He later returned to the war, where he was killed. There is no doubt in his words and this brings the readers closer to what Owen is saying and they would believe him more because they would be shocked by the words • The quote shows that when the war is done, the men "will be making homes" (line 6). This shows irony as the war is just beginning however, the authorities are already discussing the events when the war finishes. This is to distract society from the dying soldiers and show them what they will win: new homes. • This also encourages society to move forward in life as they believe that the soldiers will be back and need homes to live in. The government wants to show the society what they are fighting for. • Diction is quite strong with words such as "meanwhile" (line 7) to emphasize that the war will only last for a short period of time • There is a oxymoron when it is written "undying dead" (line 9) and this shows how the government emphasizes that more men should fight in war and if they do not, they would feel guilty. It seems to be stated as if it was a strong song to lure in young men to fight • Diction used is very encouraging and strong with words such as "integrity" (line 17) and "glory" (line 16). These are propaganda words used to encourage young men to come fight in the war. The newspaper states that glory will be theirs, who have went to war, even if they died • Punctuation such as question marks and dashes are used to create pauses and allow readers to know that Owen is about to mention an important concept. The dash and question mark creates a mocking tone and then Owen explains and elaborates on the point • "Half-limbed" (line 18) describes the young men who have already fought in war and came back without limbs and suffering. They laugh at the word "nation" (line 18) because they already know what war is like • "Smiled at one another curiously" (line 19) shows how the soldiers smile with amusement however, not with happiness. This opening paragraph is a simple, poetic version of the main theme behind All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque. The point of the story is to show that war is not romantic, glorious, or fantastic. In fact, those words could not be further from the truth. War is a disgusting competition of human instinct, fought by the wrong people. It brings out the worst in everyone; it destroys their compassion, honesty, and ideals. The beginning chapters of All Quiet on the Western Front are devoted to showing that warfare hardens soldiers against true emotions. Their main priority is survival, second is comfort, followed by gain.
In the beginning, the tone conveys the excitement and nationalism of the country in the early days of war. “Bronzed hero's, welcomed, adored, submerged in golden seas of glory!” The trepidation over war was contagious because they would idolize the soldiers. ...though people believe that, those on the home front have it just as a bad as the soldiers, because they have to deal with the responsibilities of their husbands, there is nothing that can compare to what these men have gone through. The war itself consumed them of their ideology of a happy life, and while some might have entered the war with the hope that they would soon return home, most men came to grips with the fact that they might never make it out alive. The biggest tragedy that follows the war is not the number of deaths and the damages done, it is the broken mindset derives from being at war. These men are all prime examples of the hardships of being out at war and the consequences, ideologies, and lifestyles that develop from it.
This metaphor indicates that the men are battle weary and suggests reluctance. They also have been on their feet for days and appear to be drained of youth as they "marched asleep" (5) and "limped on, blood-shod" (6). To draw into the poet’s world, the poet must draw relations between them, including the reader, making them feel what the poet feels, thinking what the poet thinks. Wilfred Owen does this very creatively and very effectively, in both of his poems, Dulce et Decorum Est Pro Patria Mori and Anthem of Doomed Youth, who is seen as an idol to many people today, as a great war poet, who expresses his ideas that makes the reader feel involved in the moment, feeling everything that he does. His poems describe the horror of war, and the consequences of it, which is not beneficial for either side. He feels sorrow and anger towards the war and its victims, making the reader also feel the same.
Both Wilfred Owen’s “Dulce et Decorum Est” as well as “next to of course god america i” written by E.E. Cummings preform critic on war propaganda used during the first world war. Besides this the influence war propaganda has on the soldiers as individuals as well as on war in more general terms, is being portrayed in a sophisticated and progressive manner. We think that just people who have been exposed to the war can deeply understand the unfortunates, tolls, and devastates of the war. He also shared and deeply sympathized sorrows of who took part in the war; the soldiers because they were not only put aside the combat, the war also keeps them away from community; people hated them as known they are officers and often shouted " down with officers" as they passing. We have found any blue and mournful tone in this story but we feel something bitter, a bitter sarcasm. As the war passing, the soldiers would not themselves any more, they became another ones; hunting hawks, emotionless.
