Learning is important for countless reasons, the most important reason being that it molds a person into who he or she is. What people choose to learn, and also what they choose not to, create the core of their opinions as individuals. Though people do not admit it or openly declare it, it is fair to say almost everyone is self centered. Because of this, and the fact that learning dramatically affects a person, learning is not only thrilling, but also expressive. Furthermore, since learning is expressive, its meaning varies from person to person, therefore making each person’s experiences with learning unique and life changing. One example can be found in Jose Torres’ essay, “A Letter to a Child Like Me”, in which the author’s objective in …show more content…
He teaches the kid what to do in order to successfully reel in a large, beautiful fish. Ironically, the narrator is the one who learns from the kid in the end. At the beginning of the story, everything is described negatively, from the description of the kid as a “lumpy little guy with baggy shorts” to his “stupid-looking ’50s-style wrap-around sunglasses” and “beat-up rod”(152). Through his encounter with the boy, the narrator is able to see life in a different way, most notable from how he describes the caught tarpon as heavy, silvery white, and how it also has beautiful red fins (154). Through the course of the story, the narrator’s pessimistic attitude changes to an optimistic one, and this change reveals how inspiring this exchange between two strangers is. This story as a whole reveals that learning also revolves around interactions between other people, not only between people and their natural surroundings and …show more content…
A user on www.Debate.Org says that “[Learning is] needed in order to function and survive in the world.” Another user on the same debate concurs, saying that “A person who stops learning stops growing and stops becoming a better and more productive person.“ This is important because it reveals the significance in learning as a whole. There are no arguments against why learning is important to date, and this reveals a lot in itself because it shows how this is a topic that cannot be argued. Without learning from their mistakes, a person continues to repeat their mistakes, making life painful. This reveals how important learning is to the meaning of life

After Louie catches an Albatross and successfully uses the meat as bait, the narrator describes an idea that Louie hopes will solve their hunger problem in the absence of bait. After creating a device out of the fishing line and hooks, Louie is able to catch the first pilot fish he sees. This instance reveals Louie’s extreme resourcefulness. Using pure creativity, Louie is able to temporarily solve a seemingly unsolvable problem. In a situation wherein having bait is dependent on nature, Louie flips the dependence onto himself.
For example, in school every moment one is learning something new whether it is a part of history, a new method to solve a problem in math, a new language, or even how to do a layup in gym which can all help one grow as a person. In school, one is also exposed to many new ideas which could come from their teachers, friends, or classmates that can influence them on how they act or their interests for different hobbies or even for what they will want to be in the future when they grow up. These ideas can greatly affect what one will enjoy doing in their life. It could be a pass time which could turn into a job that they will love. One is continuously learning even outside of school. It could just be small things that one discovers but one never fully stops learning. One is learning something in everything they do. They could be learning by reading a book, doing homework, simply talking to someone or by playing their favourite games, all of which makes one a smarter and wiser person. If we could not learn anything new, we could never be able grow as a person and be able make better choices in our lives. In addition, there are constantly new ideas that enter one’s mind which leave one to ponder on these thoughts. Curiosity also plays a major role in discovering new things. If one is curious about something interesting ,then one will want to explore the idea more. The more one explores an idea, the more they will learn. Exploring these new ideas are a fantastic thing to do because one may find a different interest that they will enjoy much more than their current interests and will lead one to change as a person and go on to live life in a better way by changing the path they go on and making different choices which relate to what they have like to
A fish is a creature that preceded the creation of man on this planet. Therefore, Bishop supplies the reader with a subject that is essentially constant and eternal, like life itself. In further examination of this idea the narrator is, in relation to the fish, very young, which helps introduce the theme of deceptive appearances in conjunction with age by building off the notion that youth is ignorant and quick to judge. Bishop's initial description of the fish is meant to further develop this theme by presenting the reader with a fish that is "battered," "venerable," and "homely." Bishop compares the fish to "ancient wallpaper.
First, the old man receives outer success by earning the respect and appreciation of the boy and the other fishermen. The boy is speaking to the old man in his shack after the old man’s long journey, “You must get well fast for there is much that I can learn and you can teach me everything” (Hemmingway 126). The boy appreciates the fact that the old man spends time to teach him about fishing. He respects him a great deal for he knows that the old man is very wise and is a magnificent fisherman. The fellow fishermen also show respect towards the old man as they note the size of the fish after the old man returns home, “What a fish it was, there has never been such a fish” (123). The men admire the fact that the old man has caught the biggest fish that they have seen. Many fishermen resented Santiago at first, however their opinion changed once they realized what the old man has gone through. Being admired by others plays a major role in improving one’s morale.
Santiago makes up for being elderly by demonstrating incredible endurance, withstanding hunger, physical pain, and isolation from the rest of the world as he battles the fish. Endurance becomes a way to connect with Santiago and the battle with the fish as they share a determination that, in its magnitude, separates them from other people and creatures. Santiago, while mocked and made fun of for his courage and perseverance, stays humble even when he catches the fish. Catching this fish was like winning today's lottery, this great fish would have provided plenty of food and money for Santiago.
I believe that learning is a journey that both child and educator set out on together. This journey is a privilege that I take seriously, realizing that a child’s early years are a key formative time in their life. I believe that it is during this time that important foundations are being set in place that will not only impact them in the present but will also influence them later on in life.
I have realized by watching my children learn and grow that every day is a learning experience. Each day they wake up ready for a new ch...
During my time as a student I have been able to develop the way I learn and interact with others to a degree that has also helped me to mature into a better person. I have come to believe that this maturity will help me to develop into a better thinker as well, one that has the patience to listen and take consideration of what others have to say. I consider the act of learning a two way avenue that has to be taken seriously. It is one that involves the teacher, and the protégé. It has been, and will continue to be, my absolute goal as a student to become a diligent protégé and acquire all of learning my teachers have set in front of me. The way each of them have helped me to think about how my actions, and the way I choose to study my lessons and develop as a student, has made a tremendous impact on my life. This impact is one that I will carry into the future as I myself advance in my professional studies.
Learning initially begins with one's attitude toward themselves, others, and the world we live in. It is our attitudes that play a major role in shaping our experiences, which in turn affects the way in which we learn. We must first be able to interpret the world using information we already know, in order to understand something entirely new. As a teacher, I could only hope that I can provide children with a positive educational experience, one that will broaden the scope in which they view themselves, others, and the world on a larger scale. Children already acquire a desire to learn, however, it is up to us to sti...
