Of the scholars who have placed great emphasis on the interdisciplinary dimension of CDA, the most noteworthy and relevant for my research have proven to be Norman Fairclough, Teun van Dijk and Ruth Wodak, each with their unique and valuable contribution to the trans-, cross- and multi-disciplinary expansion of CDA. Fairclough’s Dialectical-Relational Approach to CDA is an essentially Marxist framework, anchored in his (1989, 1995) research on language, ideology and power, an approach that has been central to CDA for over more than the past ten years. This method is defined as an approach characterized by the interaction between cognition, discourse and society. What seems to be the main difference between Fairclough’s and van Dijk’s approach is the second dimension, which mediates between the other two. Whereas van Dijk perceives social cognition and mental models as mediating between discourse and the social, Fairclough believes that this task is assumed by discourse practices (text production and consumption). Cognition, the key element in van Dijk’s approach, is achieved in collective mental models as a result of consensus and becomes the interface between societal and discourse structures (van Dijk, 2009). There seems to be a dialectical relationship between societal structures and discursive interaction. Discourse is the medium by which societal structures are “enacted, instituted, legitimated, confirmed or challenged by text and talk” (Fairclough & Wodak, 1997, p. 266). Van Dijk considers that CDA requires a model of context based on Moscovici’s (2000) social representation theory: social actors involved in discourse do not exclusively make use of their individual experiences, but rely upon collective frames of perception known as social representations, a bulk of the concepts, values, norms, associations, explanations and images shared in …show more content…
Her approach is capable of identifying and describing the underlying mechanisms that contribute to those disorders in discourse which are embedded in a particular context, at a specific moment, and inevitably affect communication. Wodak’s work on the discourse of anti-Semitism in 1990 led to the development of an approach she termed the Discourse-Historical Method. The term historical occupies a unique place in this approach. It denotes an attempt to systematically integrate all available background information in the analysis and interpretation of the many layers of a written or spoken text. As a result, the study of Wodak and her colleagues’ showed that the context of the discourse had a significant impact on the structure, function, and context of the utterances. This method is based on the belief that language “manifests social processes and interaction” and generates those processes as well (Wodak & Ludwig, 1999, p. 12). This method analyses language from a three-fold perspective: first, the assumption that discourse involves power and ideologies. “No interaction exists where power relations do not prevail and where values and norms do not have a relevant role” (p. 12). A discourse community is a group of people that are involved in and communicate about a particular topic, issue, or in a particular field. I chose to do my discourse community ethnography on the dance community. The reason why I chose the dance community is because I find it amazing how a group of people can convey an idea or a message without saying a word, just through dancing. The definition of dance is to move rhythmically to music, typically following a set sequence of steps. A discourse community is a group of people with relatively the same goals and interest to achieve a specific goal. Discourse communities gain there members by qualification, shared objectives, training, or persuading others to join their discourse community. In order for a group to be a discourse community, they must have their own languages, text, rules, and ethics that will make the discourse community run more efficiently. They will also have a form of intercommunication among the group to keep everyone involved or informed with upcoming events or just important news. Discourse communities play a big role in life and how humans interact in general. A discourse community refers to a group of people who have language, life patterns, culture, and communication in common with each other. The idea of a discourse community has also been used to bring people of different orientations together, like family members, students, or committees. All of these types of people might have different standards of living, like their level of income, education, and work abilities. Discourse community can also refer to a speech community, because the main feature of a discourse community is communication. In his article, he tries to show readers his ideas and concepts with examples. For instance, he chooses example of Nazism when he claims racial differences regard as a cultural perspective from a biological perspective which was disliked causes of Holocaust by Nazism. One key aspect that sets us apart from any other species is our development of language and how we grow and utilize it. Moreover, the theory of Social Constructionism, which is the idea that we all share a subjective meaning in a particular society and continue to develop and give meaning, has had a large role in developing our own discourse, the language used in social context and created due to institutions and social practices (Ainsworth et al. 31). Reflecting on the theory of Social Constructionism and the concept of discourse and its development, our life experiences show how language, unconsciously, relates to our theories and concepts of sociology and human development through the lifespan.
In Section 2.4.1, it is explicated that Fairclough sees ideologies as embodying resources for meaning-making. More specifically, to Fairclough (1992) ideology “is a construction of reality which contributes to the production, reproduction or transformation of relations of domination” (Fairclough 1992:87). According to Fairclough (1995:14), “to show that meanings are working ideologically it is necessary to show that they do indeed serve relations of domination in particular cases.” Therefore, in the production of discriminatory language, relations of domination are obvious and this is a matter of a primary concern to Fairclough who also claims that ideologies are reflected in language through “propositions that generally figure as implicit
