The New River
The New River is an ancient river. Despite its name, the New River is one the oldest on the continent and the second (after the Nile River in Africa) oldest river in the world. The New River is probably around 360 million years old. It begins as two streams in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina and runs 160 miles through the counties of Carroll, Pulaski, Grayson Montgomery and Giles in Virginia as well as Bluestone Lake in West Virginia before integrating into the New River four miles from the Virginia line (“Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries”). The New River ends into the great Mississippi River. It is also one of the only rivers in the world that flows north instead of south like the rest of the rivers. The New River is a great place for children, teens, adults and even the elder to enjoy a good day of water and ground activities during the seasons of summer and spring.
Students enjoy killing the summer heat in the New River around the McCoy Falls section of Montgomery and Giles counties, around twenty minutes away from Virginia Tech. The River Junction offers the opportunity of renting or bringing your own kayaks, canoes, and inner tubes to discover the area by water. One can always make a camping trip with the family or a group of friends as well as enjoy a nice fishing day. The New River Junction can be crucial to the experience of spending a summer in Blacksburg (Kelly Cline).

As the river flows through Virginia into West Virginia, it picks up several warm water tributaries, making it a strangely warm water river. The New River is wide, shallow, stony and clear, which allows the sun to augment the warm water conditions even more. The river can reach temperatures as high as 85 to 90 degre...

The New River is the new hot spot in Blacksburg for those people who love the beach. The closest beach to Blacksburg it is probably about 4 hours away. If you are one of those people who wishes they had an outside pool or a beach close by, The New River Junction gives you the chance to enjoy a good sunny day in the water. As mentioned before the waters are warm enough to not freeze you to death and a great place where you can enjoy a nice day with your friends or family. If you get to stay in Blacksburg during the summer the best way to spend a sunny weekend would be go camping, grilling and tubing.
