The American Red Cross is an organization that assists government agencies in the event of a natural disaster. The organization is largely made up of volunteers as well as paid employees and the board of directors. The board chairman is appointed by the President of the United States. The board appoints a president and CEO to manage the business of the Red Cross. The Red Cross has experienced turbulent times with their CEO’s which has resulted in a high turnover rate as well as public scandals. A highly controversial fact is that when CEO's were forced to resign they were given large severance packages for which they received great criticism (Ferrell, Fraedrich, & Ferrell, 2014). During the September 11 attacks on the United The Red Cross is seeking new partnerships with local, regional, and national organizations, in order to improve their response time. One area in which Red Cross is striving to improve is their partnership with pharmaceutical organizations. Often times when a disaster strikes, people are without their medications. The Red Cross is working to create better strategies to help ensure that donated medications are properly stored and disbursed. The Red Cross is also working to ensure that standards are in place for their Shelter Kits to be up to date and that any outdated medications are properly disposed of. The storage of these supplies are properly documented and not shared with the public. The organization has also put procedures in place for the screening and training medical personnel (Young, 2006). The Red Cross is also working to build stronger communities in rural areas that may be hard to find workers when disaster hits. By working in these communities before a disaster, the Red Cross can build self-sustaining capabilities so that communities can be better prepared in how to take action when disaster strikes (Baranick, Baird, & Vinze,
I chose to write about Lt. Michael Patrick Murphy from Operation Red Wings. Lt. Michael Patrick Murphy was a United States Navy Seal who was awarded the highest military decoration known as the Medal of Honor. He was the first member of the United States Navy to receive the award since Vietnam War. Lt. Michael Patrick Murphy’s heroic actions inspired author Patrick Robinson to write the book known as Lone Survivor that eventually turned into a hit movie in 2013.
In 1880 the American Red Cross was established, Barton served as the organisations first president until 1904 but still continuing as a volunteer in Cuba during the Spanish-American War. The American Red Cross, with Barton at its head, was largely devoted to disaster relief for the first 20 years of its existence.
The Red Cross has always been handled by volunteers and charities. It doesn’t work as a business but as a humanitarian organization. It is impartial, neutral, independent, voluntary, united and universal.

There are many areas of the world where the most basic needs like clean drinking water, proper sanitation and medical care are just not available. When disaster strikes, the people living in these already disadvantaged areas are thrust into situations where death is almost always imminent. Reach Out WorldWide (“ROWW”) was started by a group of 6 men in California. They flew to Haiti and volunteered to help in whatever way they could after a massive earthquake devastated the country on January 12, 2010. While working in Haiti as medical aid volunteers, the group recognized the need for skilled people, supplies and urgency for a faster response when natural disasters strike.
Attention Getter: According to The Red Cross Foundation, the American Red Cross responds to more than 70,000 disasters in America each year.

Ethical issues are “moral challenges” facing the health care profession (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2012, p. 127). Ethical issues is a major concern in the healthcare field because healthcare providers observe ethical issues every day and have to make ethical decisions. Advance directives are written documents that addressed an individual’s medical care preferences. These documents usually take effect when patients no longer can make informed health care decisions for themselves. While these documents are helpful to loved ones and health care providers, there are a number of ethical considerations that can make the development and execution of advance directives difficult (Llama, 2014). This author is a geriatric nurse that recently observed an advance directive ethical issue in the clinical setting. The purpose of this paper is to outline the steps of ethical decision-making within the seven steps for the framework. This paper will also identify the facts of the case from the perspective of each person impacted by the situation and identify which ethical principles were involved in the situation.
Doctors Without Borders work in war zones, places where natural disasters have occurred, where populations have displaced or where hunger and epidemics have increased. Specifically, they work in 80 countries worldwide, in Europe, Africa, and in America (particularly in South America). They choose these places because that is where their help is particularly needed, so their action is not biased in any kind of way. The MSF is prompt to answer to any emergency around the world – it takes about 48 hours or less to reach the country in which they are needed (the trip will depend on the distance and the weather), and the medical machineries will get to the country in about 72 hours. Astutely, every MSF is provided with a pre-packed disaster kit,
American Red Cross has been viewed as the nation’s elite humanitarian organization, dedicating themselves to aiding people in need throughout the United States. The American affiliation has also held a joint association with the global Red Cross and Red Crescent networks throughout the world. They are highly dependent on the contributions of American public volunteers time, blood, and money to help support their lifesaving services and programs. All volunteers and employees, alongside the generous donors share a mission of preventing and relieving suffering, not just in the United States but around the world. According to RedCross.org they do this through five key service areas:
So the Red Cross helps with natural disasters but is that all? No, it is not, the Red Cross will help anything that involves human suffering such as food shortages. One example are the southern countries in Africa such as Angola, Zimbabwe, Lesotho and Malawi
In this essay we will discuss and analyze many of the ethical issues surrounding The American Red Cross. The American Red Cross was founded by Clara Barton in the year of 1881 (Thorne, 2005). Barton in return coined the title The American Red Cross which was an inspiration gathered from the work of the International Red Cross in Europe. The purpose of the American Red Cross is to bring aid to disaster victims throughout the world. The American Red Cross has been in the spotlight for misappropriation of funds as well as slow response times during some of the nation’s largest natural disasters to date.
The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, born of a desire to bring assistance without discrimination to the wounded on the battlefield, endeavors, in its international and national capacity, to prevent and alleviate human suffering wherever it may be found. Its purpose is to protect human life and health and to ensure respect for the human being. It promotes mutual understanding, friendship, cooperation and lasting peace amongst all people.
An incredible resource for answers to these questions and more on this humanitarian effort can be on the International Committee of the Red Cross, which is filled with a plethora of information. Of course, additional information can be found by utilizing an internet search and the good old fashioned
