This divided the south into several districts, The reconstruction act lasted until 1877. After the civil war ended ,reconstruction was well organized and peaceful until there was an increasing amount of fear and violence during the time of “Reign of Terror”. This was an unfortunate time because many blacks were being abused or murdered. The Ku Klux Klan became an organization by terrorists. “Give me liberty” by Eric Foner states “hundreds of former slaves were murdered, including fifty members of a black militia unit after they had surrendered.” (pg.468) You can assume this …show more content…

White people always were in charge and had the ability to get a better education than the blacks. The book states “Black schools, however suffered the most, as the gap between expenditures for black and white pupils widened steadily.”(pg.518) During reconstruction, african americans got to own more land , but in the 1900s, we learn to discover that the blacks were able to only have a portion of the land they had before reconstruction. This marks some of the disadvantages that the blacks had in the south, along with the several ways they were treated as domestic servants, and how they were not ALL allowed to vote. Although there were many cons during this time, there were pros such as the “Women’s Era” . This era meant that women were able to pursue higher paying jobs ,and they were able to join clubs/organizations as well. The book talks highly about this area and says “founded in 1874, the Women’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) grew to become the eras largest female organization, with a membership by 1890 of 150,000.” (pg.528) This was a feminist movement, they also argued for their right to vote in education and also politics.
