Abraham Lincoln was the sixteenth President of the United States. Today, he is quite popular among people for his role in the Civil War and for "freeing the slaves." Lincoln was a much more complex character in an American history even prior to his involvement in the Federal government. Lincoln 's life experiences, early political career, personality and appearance, as well as political philosophy toward slavery and black Americans shapes him to be one of the more recognizable leaders of the United States Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12th, 1809 in Hardin County, Kentucky to Thomas and Nancy Hanks Lincoln. Lincoln had an extremely homely look; he was tall, gangly, and had deep-set grey eyes. In fact, he is the tallest President with a height of six feet and four inches tall (DeGregorio). Despite his appearance, Lincoln was comfortable with the way he looked and often laughed at himself and often found humor at inappropriate moments. He was a plain-spoken man who was an excellent listener. Lincoln felt more comfortable speaking to a small group of people. It is apparent Lincoln had a dark side and historians speculate that Lincoln battled with depression. Lincoln once said, "If what I feel ere equally distributed to the whole human family, there would not be one cheerful face on the earth. Whether I should eve be better, I cannot tell; I awfully forebode I shall not. To remain as I am is impossible; I must die or be better, it appears to me (DeGregorio)." This is one instance where Lincoln complained about his battle with his possible depression. Today, we often call the sixteenth president of the United States "Honest Abe" and, in reality, his moral character did hold up to the title of "Honest Abe." Some say Lincoln received the title of "Honest Abe" when he was a young store clerk and if he realized he short-changed a customer he would deliver the correct change - no matter how far he had to walk (Leidner). His life experiences shaped him to have the political and moral values that made him the man he was. Many credit Lincoln for many things such as keeping the Union together during the Civil War and freeing the slaves in the Emancipation Proclamation. However, there is much more to Lincoln then the average book tells you. Sadly, Lincoln did not believe equality between white and black men despite finding slavery immoral. In conclusion, "Honest Abe 's" background and traits made him the president who kept our nation together in a time of hardship and the American people will know him as as one of the great and more interesting leaders of our
