A Cultural Encounter
I met this "different person" at the periodical section of the Good Library of State College. After asking the person for my article that I had requested I ask his name, he answers with his Indian accent, "Ajai Ahulalia." I say, "What?s that?" "Ajai Sanhi," he responds back. "What?" I say, being embarrassed because I cannot understand his name. "Ajai Ahulalia" he tries for the third time. "Oh Ajai," finally I understand. I ask, "Were do you live?" "Yoder First" he answers, then I fell a fool again, "Really, me too." What has happened to Ajai?s life when he lived in India and now here in the U.S.?
Ajai lived in the same floor as I did but I did not notice him. I knew that there were some Indians on my floor but I had a hard time knowing Americans names, since I grew up in Israel, so I could not even pronounce Indian names. For example, the name BJ, what is BJ for? It stands for Bijayendra, how about Rishi, and Kashif? At least now after a year I know their names and can pronounce them correctly. Since then I have joined Ajai, Business double major of State College, for an Indian meal at Chicago, which was five guys into this little car of Ajai?s going to Chicago for Indian meal then a walk on the beach. I have joined their conversations even when I just understand ratarata lara a shara and put some more of this ai;u,mnbaiuet;lkmv; into the conversation. Currently I would see Ajai as a person that can be found mostly in the computer lab making money, since I would say he is a money machine or known as the varsitybooks.com. Maybe he can make our bookstore go bankrupt or at least force the prices down.
Ajai has not been always the person described. According to friends Ajai has changed his physical looks since the first time he came to State College; an Indian with very long hair, and a beard, but now with short hair and no beard. These physical characteristics were part of his Sikh religion. To be a Sikh it is not necessary to have long hair, a beard and wear traditional forms according to him. The needs of such differences are just to distinguish a Sikh from others. Ajai has dropped his costumes of his religion for the lack of time to maintain his hair and beard and the need to keep explaining why he is different from others.
Lahiri, a second-generation immigrant, endures the difficulty of living in the middle of her hyphenated label “Indian-American”, whereas she will never fully feel Indian nor fully American, her identity is the combination of her attributes, everything in between.
Jhumpa Lahiri, the brilliant author of The Namesake, made a significant point about second-generation immigrants having dual-identities in America. In terms of dual-identity in The Namesake, a person is encountered with choosing between cultures, lifestyles, and decisions. Gogol Ganguli, a protagonist, faces the problem of dual-identity throughout the book. Furthermore, he was faced with the idea of becoming either a true American or Bengali. Gogol’s problematic dual-identity journey started from the day that he was born till the day he found a true balance between his dual-identity.
J. Eng. Lit. Cult. becomes merely “Street” as (does) Lingayat Street, Mudliyar Street and half a dozen others in Toturpuram” (5) in a gesture of egalitarianism whose effects are literally, as well as symbolically, disorientating. The sense of displacement is compounded by changes that have occurred on the street itself over the last few decades- “instead of the tender smell of fresh jasmine.... in scented sticks and virtue, instead of the chanting of sacred hymns the street had become thud with the haggling of cloth merchants and vegetable vendors, (and) the strident strains of the latest film music from video parlours” (5-6). The incursion of these loud and nestling registers of cultural change into the sanctuary of Sripathi‟s study mirrors more significant assaults on his sense of traditions including most worryingly, the refusal of his children to lead the lives he has imagined for him: his daughter Maya has broken off her engagement to an Indian man to marry a Canadian with whom she now lives in Vancouver, and his son Arun has rejected a tradition job in favour of a career as an environmental activist. Sripathi responds to the affronts by ceasing to communicate, literally, in the case of Maya, with whom he has stopped corresponding, and figuratively, with Arun and the rest of his family, through a retreat into an increasingly self enclosed world. The narrative traces the gradual expansion of his consciousness, a process initiated by Maya‟s death in a car
Some people struggle with understanding who they are every day. They constantly look for ways to fit in. Curiosity can make him or her search for their place in society. In the narrative “You don’t look Indian” by Greg Sarris, we follow him in his journey to finding out his true identity.
Whether it is the mainstream media or the online community, cryptocurrencies, the new and emerging digital money transfer system, is gaining interest fast. One of the most popular cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, recently has been the subject to numerous criticism and negative speculation in the mainstream media due to the recent fall of Bitcoin’s largest currency exchange, Mt.Gox. However, despite negative media reports, Investing.com reported that Bitcoin prices have recently surged past $700 dollars, up 41% since the 25th of February of this year (Investing.com, 2014). Bitcoin’s rallying prices has shown that people have true faith in its future, and that cryptocurrencies in general, are here to stay and are the future of money exchange. Cryptocurrencies exist on a decentralized monetary system, meaning that there is no central authority, government, or institution that controls the flow of the currency (Quast, 2014). The main benefit of having a decentralized monetary system is the freedom of dismissing the need to rely upon a third party, such as a bank, for monetary transfers. Cryptocurrencies are stored on a user’s own computer, and uses a peer-to-peer system to verify transactions, allowing for faster and cheaper money transfers all around the world (Clark, 2013). Having a decentralized system also prevents the manipulation of money for political or institutional benefits, as the flow of money will be handled by an online network, as opposed to an institution. In addition, cryptocurrencies are not subject to inflation, as it will have a fixed rate of generation that slows down as quantities increase, and will stop the generation new currency once a capacity limit on the supply has bee...
In “My Two Lives” Jhumpa Lahiri talks about her hardship growing up in America coming from two different cultures. At home she spoke Bengali with her parents, ate with her hands. According to Jhumpa’s parents she was not American and would never be. This led her to become ashamed of her background. She felt like she did not have to hide her culture anymore. When Jhumpa got married in Calcutta she invited her American friends that never visited India. Jhumpa thought her friends would judge from being part of the Indian culture and isolate her. However her friends were intrigued by her culture and fascinated. She felt like her culture should not be hidden from her friends anymore, and that coming from an Indian-American culture is unique. Jhumpa believes that her upbringing is the reason why she is still involved with her Bengali culture. Jhumpa says“While I am American by virtue of the fact that I was raised in this country, I am Indian thanks to the efforts of two individuals.” Jhumpa means that she is Indian, because she lived most of her life and was raised here. In the story Lahiri explains that her parents shaped her into the person she is. Growing up coming from two different cultures can be difficult, but it can also be beneficial.
Homework has been an integral part of education since children started to be educated. Recently however, homework has begun to be assigned more and more often to students, especially in the United States, as it has begun to fall further and further behind countries like China, Singapore, and Japan. Homework is anything assigned by teachers to be completed by the students either at home, or just on their own time. The workload for students has gotten to the point where more and more parents are starting to notice the load for their kids has gotten to be too much. Many kids in high school, even 9th and 10th graders, can have 3 or even 4 hours of homework every night. In the past couple years, homework has gotten so out of control that parents are starting to speak out, and protest the amount of homework that students get each night (Marzano). In addition, studies have been done to determine the value of homework, but overall, the results are mixed at best (Kohn). Even studies that show a positive relationship between homework and test scores, among other things, show that homework is only effective when assigned in a moderate amount. Too much homework can be counter-productive, or have adverse effects on students. Students with too much homework can perform worse on tests, and develop serious physical and mental health problems from too much stress or lack of sleep.
While members can fluctuate significantly in family unit wage, by and large, low-salary families will probably spend a greater amount of their cash on lottery tickets with expectations of obtaining money related security. Individuals regularly get cleared up in the fever as Powerball payouts move increasingly elevated and 'some person needs to win, purchasing tickets since they would prefer not to be the special case who did not attempt. Others purchase their tickets and dream of what their lives may resemble on the off chance that they won it enormous and never needed to stress over cash until the end of time. The overall population does not regularly see exactly how low the chances of winning are and many don't acknowledge how their cash could be better contributed generally. These elements make individuals continue playing the lottery, despite the fact that the odds of winning are miniscule. Still, a large number of individuals keep on buying tickets with the expectation that, sometime in the not so distant future, the chances will hand over their
The stressful school year has begun and the homework immediately starts to pile up. Some people might think hours of homework every night is necessary in helping students continue to learn and progress in that specific subject. “...homework can ensure that they are learning well morning, noon and night”, understanding that some adults want students to learn every night to ensure they know the material, however in most cases the overloading of homework tends to do the opposite. The rising problem starts to surface a lot during the years of fifth grade to high school. Complaining of homework starts to be the regular topic of interest in every conversation. Understanding that this can also be seen as students being lazy and not wanting to work, but the excessive amount every night in every subject
One cannot generalize or predict all human behaviors, thought processes, morals, and customs. Because human nature is dominated by different types of cultures and societies in various parts of the world, this can often lead to misunderstanding which ultimately leads to the illusion of cultural superiority, and in most cases this can lead to genocide - the systematic murder or annihilation of a group of people or culture. Anthropology is the study of humans, our immediate ancestors and their cultural environments this study stems from the science of holism - the study of the human condition. Culture is crucial in determining the state of the human condition, as the cultures are traditions and customs that are learned throughout an individual

Biological warfare is one of the unique ways of creating havoc in popular cities nowadays. It’s hard to recognize right away and it generates massive amounts of health related issues. In an article titled, “Introduction to Biological Weapons”, by Michael Stebbins, it states that biological weapons have been used for quite some time. “In 1346, the invading Tartar army catapulted the bodies of plague victims into the Crimean Peninsula city of Kaffa and infected its citizens. In 1763, British troops under General Jeffrey Amherst gave the Delaware Indians blankets used by people with smallpox, possibly infecting the susceptible native population. Japan contaminated food and released plague-infected ticks during their conflict with China during World War II. The 2001 anthrax letter attacks in the United States infected 22 people and killed five” (Stebbins, 2007). As one can see, the use of biological weapons has become popular to mankind throughout the years in various ways. Also, biotechnology has recently become much easier to supply weapons with deadly agents, chemicals, and other toxins. Thus, people ...
Humans are fragile beings that need only a few things to survive and live in this evolving world. One of them is the essential need for sleep. Many humans do not receive the required amount of sleep each night and this occurs in individuals of all ages. Not sleeping enough and not having the ability to get a restful sleep can result in dangerous mental and physical affects for that particular individual. The continuous deprivation of sleep can affect your health, your daily performance, and a myriad of other aspects of your daily life. “We are a society that burns the candle at both ends, a nation where people stay up all night to study, work, or have fun. However, going without adequate sleep carries with it both short- and long-term
Sleep is one of the very few biological urges beyond our control. We as humans value our periods of sleep and dread the moments when sleep is interpreted. Sleep can be defined as the state of mind when we go through muscle relaxation, low sensory activity, and a reduced interaction with our surroundings (Goldstein 2014). The brain creates a sleep-wake cycle of approximately 24 hours, even in an unchanging environment. It is important to ask, what exactly occurs when we sleep?
