My chosen profession is Healthcare Administration. Healthcare Administrators plan, direct, and coordinate health and medical services in many organizations. They are responsible for administering the financials, managing personnel, maintaining boards, analyzing facility activities, and planning programs (11-9111.00 - Medical and Health Services Managers, n.d.). Depending on specific occupation acquired, several different softwares can be learned. Skills such as administration, customer service, human resources, and accounting are imperative for this career as interacting with people is the majority of this job. You can become a Healthcare Administrator by obtaining your Bachelors of Science in Healthcare Administration degree. It takes about four years to complete the courses and is equal to 180 credits for the classes at Kaplan University. If I decide to manage a nursing home facility, I will need to pass the licensing exam for nursing home administration after I have received my degree in health care administration. Some courses that are taken include Healthcare Policy and Economics, Finance for Health Care, and Medical Office Management. Many further their career and continue their education on to receive a Master’s. Thus opening more job options. Short term, I want to work in a medical facility, preferably a hospital or small clinic, in an administrative and/or clerical position. I would like to do this to gain experience on my resume since I have never worked in a medical field job before. After about five years, I will have my bachelor’s degree and want to be a department head in the hospital or managing a small medical office. My long term goal, after I go on to get my Master’s in Healthcare Administration, would be to open a small donation only clinic available to working parents who can’t afford healthcare insurance for their children. They are able to see a doctor for a short clinical visit for a suggested donation of something like twenty dollars. The staff would be made up of college interns who are in the pediatric or in another medical practicing major with a licensed medical doctor present overseeing the visit. This will help low income working parents to receive care for their child at an affordable rate. However, I know this would be difficult with Obamacare and its laws so hopefully by then, we will be rid of Obamacare. Another long term goal of mine is to manage a hospital or a public health facility. If I am unable to open my own business, I would like to oversee an entire hospital or manage public healthcare in the community I live. Either way, I would be impacting many lives and also be very beneficial to the community in several ways.

After review of my skills, interests, and experiences, I decided to pursue the medical career field as my first career choice, more specifically as a physician assistant. I will exceed in this position in the interest of that I like to help people and I solve problems well. Also, I communicate well with others and I have a great amount of patience. There are various careers that fit my skills and interests, but this one grabs my attention. My dream job is to be a doctor, but this occupation allows one to save money by lessening the years of school required. Also, the pay isn’t too shabby either. I will be successful in this position due to my skills, characteristics, and values, like honesty and helping others. Up to this point, I have job shadowed at a medical billing company and I like the idea of diagnosing and helping people, but a desk job is not ideal. Also, I took a medical terminology as a class and I discovered that I like how the body works and what it does. These factors have all influenced my career goal.
If you have someone who may have been in banking for several years as an administrator and hiring them to be a healthcare administrator you may find out quickly that you have hired the wrong individual. Yes they may have great leadership skills and communication and relationship management skills but if they have never worked in a clinical or hospital, or any healthcare setting for that matter, how do you expect them to be able to relate to the complex problems that may occur with patient care, hiring the right employees to oversee patient care, and in many cases, hiring the right employees to oversee the hiring of the employees performing patient care. There are also many different computer programs that are necessary for an administrator to know in order to run a health care facility in an effective manner. Yes, many different occupations have programs that they must learn in order to be effective, but in the health care arena many times there isn’t time to teach one from scratch on how to use such a program. One example of not having enough time is when a major natural or manmade disaster takes place. I would like to start the journey of going back to school for my Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management and obtain my Registered Health Information Administrator certification during my second year of my career since according to the American Health Information Management Association it can take up to two and a half years to finish their bachelor’s degree program while working. For any administrator in the health care field they must always be aware of any problem that has happened and be able to fore see any problems that might arise in the future. The administrator has to be able to work with staff and keep them up to date with any and all changes to the way in which they handle patient information. As well as be able to put aside their personal beliefs for the benefit of the organization and the patient.
I think that athletic training, and many careers of the sort, are up and coming. There will always be a need for health care workers and they are paid lots of money. Careers I am interested in pursuing as an adult include things somewhere in health care such as sports medicine, athletic training, or a physician. These careers all center on general medicine. I chose the first two because of my love for sports, so if I am not able to play them in the future I still want to play a role in them. Another reason I choose health care is because I enjoy helping people. This is a growing industry because there will always be a need for doctors, physicians, nurses etc. I am already preparing for a career like this in high school because I am signed up to take Health Science courses throughout and also Honors Anatomy as a science. Also for the first two careers I am playing sports which help me to become familiar with the injuries involved in sports and how to treat some of them just from watching. The further education required for the Sports related jobs (will do report from Athletic training point of view) are a 4-year degree from an accredited college, and you usually also need to be certified by the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA).
Choosing a major has never been an easy task; after high school graduation, without a college plan, many of us finds ourselves taking classes we don’t even need in the first year of college. Setting aside some times to decide what we want to do in life, what we want to study, and where we want to be in the next five years or so can help us save time, money, and most likely can direct us toward our most coveted career goal. Changing our mind along the way is typical of us, but there are always many majors to choose from; but when it comes to the healthcare field, not every single one of us interested in healthcare as a profession gets to wear the white coat or the scrub because some of us hate the sight of blood and needles.
