In the years of 1860-1877 the United States brought forth many social and constitutional developments and changes. Along with these numerous changes, continuities stayed. The start of the Civil War in 1860 would trigger the dividing of the American people from each other. The times from the end of the Civil War to the end of reconstruction would change America up to this day. Social developments surrounding the rights of African-American citizens began to gain momentum after the Civil War ended and the former slaves were set free. It is stated in this petition the argument that if the black peoples can serve in the army and fight against rebel forced, then why do they not have the right to vote yet? We see the first man looks like he does not make as much money due to his clothing, the next appears to be making good money judging by his suit, the next is a member of the military, and so on. African American men were very much part of the society in the post-Civil War America, but many of the former slave owning southerners and a few northerners refused to integrate the African-American peoples into their society. The southerners grew violent towards their former freed slaves and consequently the Ku Klux Klan was established by the white people who wanted to terrorize the African Americans. In document H, the KKK represented a shift of power from the states to the central government. The 14th and 15th amendments, which granted the black male citizens the rights that white male citizens had, were questioned after the government did not shut the terrorist groups down.
