With the Olympics less than 13 days away many athletes are making their way to Rio de Janeiro. But many athletes are waiting until open ceremonies are closer because they don’t want to be in Rio longer than they have to. Many athletes are waiting because they are afraid they will get the Zika virus. Some athletes are so scared of the Zika virus, they withdrew from the games. Making the total count of athletes the lowest since the 1936 summer Olympics in Berlin.
According to the Ministerity of Health, “the Zika virus is a mild cebrile viral illness transmitted by mosquitoes” (“Zika Virus”). These mosquitoes are aggressive daytime biters. They can also bite at night. The WHO (World Health Organization) “estimates 3 million to 4 million people across the Americas will be infected with the virus in the next year” ("Zika Virus and Potential Complications.”). "As long as the mosquito keeps reproducing, each and every one of us is losing the battle against the mosquito," Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff said recently. "We have to mobilize so we do not lose this battle" (LaMotte, "Zika Virus: 5 Things You Need to Know.”).
Many people mainly women are fearful of Zika because Zika is linked to microcephaly. According to WebMD, “Microcephaly stunts a baby’s growth, causing devastating, sometimes fatal damage, and it can result in miscarriage and stillbirth” ("Zika Virus Symptoms, Countries, Risk, and Prevention."). Microcephaly can occur because a baby’s brain has not developed properly during pregnancy or has stopped growing after birth, which results in a smaller head size. As for the athletes in Rio. If you follow these steps and minimize your time outside especially in the day time. You will decrease your odds of getting the Zika virus. And it could save your life.
In conclusion, the Zika virus is very dangerous, even though we do not know much about. And currently there is no cure for Zika. Zika is very dangerous for women and her unborn child. Zika is getting more dangerous and is not going anywhere any time soon.
