Rational Analysis: Verbal and non-verbal issues Communication is the simple “process of acting on information,” but communication is a lot more complex than that. Communication comes in varies categories and can be misunderstood if the message is not clear. Verbal and non-verbal communication is a great example where an issue can occur—if the source transmits a message that is not very well developed, then the receiver might interpret the message in a different context than originally intended. Noise keeps a message from being understood and achieving its intended effect.” In verbal and non-verbal noise can be “literal—the obnoxious roar of a power lawn mower—or it can be psychological, such as competing thoughts, worries, and feelings that capture our attention.” Whether it is literal or psychological, noise can be a major issue in verbal and non-verbal communication because it can distort the message that is being conveyed. In this case, an issue can occur with verbal communication is when literal noise will disrupt the message—possibly making the message distorted. For example, if your aunt asks you to babysit your cousin for the weekend, but then you hear the child screaming and crying the entire time you are communicating with your aunt—that could cause you to think twice about babysitting the child. In verbal communication, feedback is important because it gives a better understanding of the message that was being encoded. In other words, if a professor asks you a question during the lecture and you respond with, “I don’t know,” or you do not respond at all, then the professor can only assume that you were not paying attention during class, or you do not understand the question—giving feedback, that maybe the professor needs to repeat the question, or phrase it in a way that you do understand.
